There’s honestly so much layered queer-coding on Dean Winchester that it fucks me up. I remember on my first watch through of the series as it aired, I was frequently getting bisexual vibes off Dean. Strong ones. And it was SUBTLE, and it was hard to explain to people. I didn’t have a good REASON TO BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN IT. It was beyond the eyesex and the gay jokes in the show.

And it wasn’t until some time later, viewing the show as a whole, and catching all the references. The obscure(and not so obscure) movie references and cinematic parallels sprinkled liberally into the show ALL SUGGEST that Dean also has an attraction to men. It is the subtextiest subtext ever. 

It’s similar to the “Porky’s 2: The Next Day” reference.  In 4.05 “Monster Movie”, Dean says Sam would never guess what movie Dean would want his life to be, and Sam correctly guesses “Porky’s II”. Which, if you HAVEN’T SEEN IT, is not only about men who are scared to show off their feminine side and dress as fairies, but also has FAR LESS female nudity than the first movie, and significantly more MALE NUDITY. But would most viewers catch this? No. It’s a notoriously unpopular “bad” cult movie and most people haven’t SEEN IT. The pop culture joke that makes it work, is that people know the far more popular “Porky’s”, which is a pervy sophomoric sex comedy, and that it’s the “crappy sequel”. So the joke still works, and doesn’t COME OFF AS QUEER to the casual viewer. It just seems like Dean likes pervy sex comedy movies, and he especially likes one that’s thought of as being crappy.

 The sheer amount of shit the writers slid in to reference Dean as queer is actually A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT. They put in there REALLY OBVIOUS references for those who catch them, but that the average viewer would miss. That is what queer coding IS.

Dean’s flop back onto the bull is meaningless to someone who hasn’t seen Urban Cowboy, most wouldn’t even catch it. But for the ones who DO catch it, the scene IMMEDIATELY CALLS TO MIND the cowboy coming up and kissing her. The regular straight viewers of this scene who catch it could simply say “oh it’s just a reference to a movie with a similar scene”. And yet, they didn’t use Bud’s scenes? They SPECIFICALLY used Sissy’s SEXY mechanical bull riding scene where a cowboy comes up and kisses her.

The negative space of this scene is just SO LOUD.

imagine living in a world where telling lgbt fans they’re ruining the “integrity” of a show for saying gay love exists within its narrative is more common than calling out actual inc*st supporters in the fandom. the fact that blue checkmarks will indirect and directly respond to lgbt fans to tell them they’re wrong about a gay romance being in the show but won’t block the inc*sters in their notifs, or will reply to them in a non confrontational way. insane

like. you honestly get so desentized to it, being in this fandom, that sometimes it sort of shocks me when I realize what someone not a part of this fandom would think, on the outside looking it. it is mind boggling that not only is inc*st normalization and glorification so prominent in this fandom that interacting with it in any capacity means you have to resign yourself to that reality, that it becomes something you sigh with annoyance at rather than being utterly shocked and disgusted, the way people in real life interacting with society feel when the concept of inc*st is brought up. it is mind boggling that the powers that be allowed this to happen and took no measures to stop it, meanwhile have taken the time over the years to ensure that fans no there’s no such thing as a gay romance between the two characters who aren’t brothers on the show. and the way they conflate these two concepts, like in fanfiction where they depict fans as involving both destiel and w*ncest in their show, as if that would happen even if Hell froze over, where the actress playing Dean (who’s in a relationship with the actress playing Cas, mind!) is acting flirty with the actress playing Sam, after having been affectionate with her actual girlfriend. insane that tptb think they are at all comparable. it is completely, utterly beyond the pale that I can confidently say that not once can I recall tptb making a statement against w*ncest, both within fandom culture and as an interpretation of their show. never once did they say, we are aware of the interpretation that Sam and Dean have romantic feelings for one another rather than familial love, we are aware that fans ship them: we do not support this reading. incest is a real life immoral thing that causes harm and trauma. this reading has never been intended by our show, we did not write that, and we do not endorse that interpretation or that fan content. instead what we got was them name dropping it in the actual show as a joke, and speaking out against the non inc*st ship with actual written subtext that culminated in a textual love confession for years. that’s insane. frankly, it’s insidious. where the fuck else would you hear about something like this happening. where the fuck else would this be considered normal.

obviously The Scene was butchered and i do think that was intentional to cut any more explicit reciprocation but like i also think it’s important to hold on to that in 15x18 we have:

charlie loses her lover

sam loses his lover

dean loses his [redacted]

and then in the very next episode we complete the parallel that:

lucifer appears to sam as his dead girlfriend to convince him to let him in

lucifer appears to nick as his dead wife to convince him to let him in

lucifer appears to dean as his dead [redacted] to convince him to let him in

(not even mentioning how he sprints up the stairs, showing us plainly that regardless (because????) of what cas said dean desperately only wants him there and with him and safe)

like jail for pedowitz for 10000 years for taking what we deserve away from us but we have textual evidence within both 15x18 and 15x19 that dean reciprocates that they didn’t cut out and they can  never take away from us
