About the Hungarian Alphabet

In the Hungarian alphabet there are 44 letters. There are, also, combinations of letters, for example: cs, dz, ny, zs, sz

But there are also letters, which aren't used in the Hungarian language, but they are in the alphabet. They are q, w, and y. As with everything, there are some exceptions too. q -> Aquincum (a district in Budapest) and earlier they were used to write some words, like kvartett (=quartett) kvantum (=quantum) akvárium (=aquarium) with q, but not anymore. w -> in old family names, like Weöres Sándor or Wesselényi Miklós y -> in old family names, like Ybl Miklós, or Karinthy Frigyes (pronounced like "i")  -> in combinations like gy, ny, ty

Maybe you noticed, that there are two letters with the same pronunciation: j and ly. This has been a problem for a long time, because it makes writing really hard. You can't tell the difference between them in pronunciation, you have to learn them and use context clues. For example: gólya is NOT gója; jég is NOT lyég But this is a serious problem, there is time to learn it later too.

You probably noticed, that all the vowels have two forms: A long and a short. 

Short forms have nothing: a, e, u, o or with dots: i, ö, ü 

Long forms have an apostrophe above the vowel: á, é, ú, ó, í, ő, ű

Giving Nicknames in Hungarian

There is a pattern to nicknames in Hungary.   Anything can have an "i" added to it.

 For example:

Agnes ---> Agi

Barbara---> Barbi This is used among friends and family, but for a child you can add "ka/ke" to the end after the i.

Agnes--->Agika

Barbara----> Barbika

Meeting a Friend

Me: Szia! Hogy vagy?

Friend: Köszi, jól! Hogy vagy? or Jól, köszi. És te? or Jól. És te?

Me: Nem jól.

In English

Me: Hi! How are you?

Friend: Thanks, Good, How are you? OR Good, thanks and you?

OR Good, and you?

Me: Not Good.

March 15 in Hungary

In 1848, Hungarians led a revolution against the Austrian empire. The main goals of their revolution were freedom of the press, use of Magyar as the official language, among others. At first the Austrian Empire recognized the state, but eventually the leaders of the revolution were executed in Arad. Now Hungary celebrates this day as a national holiday. In Budapest all of the museums are open and free to EU citizens, on the chain bridge there are historical reenactments. Be mindful, stores are closed except for a few convenience like shops. Now that you've learned about March 15, don't forget your cockade!
