Whatever it was that Hongbin was expecting, it most certainly wasn’t this; he doesn’t tense up but he freezes in Wonshik’s hold as if something about the situation managed to catch him so off guard that he hasn’t properly processed it just yet.
Honestly, that statement isn’t too wrong, all things considered.

He’s instantly guilty- guilty for being an idiot- for not taking care of himself. He recognizes that what he’s done is a mistake- pathetic, and yet he can’t bring himself to really focus on that. It’s a mixture of how he feels and just how much he doesn’t want to think. He’s way too good at letting himself rot away and that disturbs him on far too many levels. He lets out a shaky breathe and tries to focus on Bin’s words. He doesn’t even bother with looking at the other man- it too difficult and he’s far too ashamed. He just listens to Bin’s words and lets him take each of them in as best as he can.
“...Sorry.” It’s low now- voice cracked and dry. He doesn’t care for the sound of it but it’s better to talk than not. “It was stupid... I just-- didn’t... think about it. I couldn’t- I dunno’.” His words end abruptly and he glances up now. Bin’s worried about Xing and Jae, which is honestly fair. Shik’s been worried too- worried and unable to do anything. Xing’s hurt. Jae’s locked away. He hasn’t seen them, but at least he knows they’re alive. His eyes fall way out of focus. His body is feeling a bit lighter.
“They’re ok...” It’s what he manages and he dubs it good enough. It’s what Bin needs to hear. Okay isn’t a great state but it means they’re alive and that, maybe, they will be as he states. He’s still shaky when he realizes that the reason he feels light is because Bin has moved his arm to support him. He’s now leaning on the thief and he blinks slightly. Bin had said something about going, but it really doesn’t register at first where it is that they plan to go. He stares more through his roommate than at him. He manages to support himself alright with the small amount of help. He’s not going to push off too much of his weight on Hongbin- he’s pretty sure Bin couldn’t take that.
He’s given some sort of half order to keep talking and it takes him probably a whole minute to process exactly what he should say. He looks at the ground and then around the room- slight noise escaping his throat. What is there to talk about? Should he just say whatever the heck is in his head? That’s about all he can get right now, so it’ll have to work.
“Okay...” It’s a slow start, but at least he gives a response. “... I don’t know what to say really... My head feels light, but I’m happy you’re back. You know I really don’t feel like life around here would be the same without you... Dunno’ if I’d even still be here, I guess.” He tries to laugh but it sort of hurts, so he winces instead. “You and Jae and Xing... I’ve never really gotten to have friends like you three so... I’m happy... Even though I’m an idiot who gets hurt a lot.”
He pauses for a moment- quiet. His head has gone somewhere else and he blinks again to try to gather some sort of will. They’re walking somewhere and he still isn’t really sure where.”
“I remembered a lot of the stuff they did to me at Mutagen.” It’s sudden and weirdly clear- voice stable. “I remembered what I did too.”
From the looks of it, Wonshik didn’t register that he let that bit of information slip out; it was something that made it out unintentionally, which meant that extra caution was required for bringing it back into mention.
He starts out slow, returning to the explanation that was given and answer with a thoughtful, “I see…” before making a short pause. Air is drawn in slowly, and as it’s breathed out, words roll along with it, “Excuse me, they—? Who are you referring to?” Rapidly, out of panic, he rushes to speak further and has his words come out hastily, in one breath “I hope it’s alright that I ask! If not, we don’t have to talk about it.”
There’s still an air about this whole thing that’s very awkward. Shik’s expression is still blanked out- head somewhere else for either his own sake or maybe someone else’s. Lu Han isn’t asking things yet. There’s just quiet. Complete, absolute silence. Wonshik normally would make an effort to fill the moment of awkward silence with something- a laugh or joke, but now he can’t think of one. The silence sends his head deeper into his thoughts and he can feel himself submerging in memories- flashes. Clawed hands stretch- open and close again and again. He needs to concentrate on that feeling- just that, but his mind isn’t exactly allowing it. No... Nothing is ever that simple.
When words are finally spoken he looks over far to quickly- head snapping to the side with eyes somewhat wide. He’d been so lost that for the moment he forgot that the person sitting directly next to him was likely extremely uncomfortable. He blinks a few times- willing the rest of his thoughts away, before finally concentrating on what’s being said. However, what he hears doesn’t even begin to help his mind stay on a different track. If anything, it sends it back a few steps. He blinks rapidly- nervously. His glance slides to the ground. He probably looks dejected, but he’s far more concerned with how his companion is panicking.
“Not a big deal. I talk about it a lot.” He waves a hand far less enthusiastically than he normally would, but he’s not exactly aware of it. “They are... Mutagen: an organization of researchers looking to find ways that the human body forces adaptation. I’m not sure what their main goal was but...” A sigh escapes and his eyes are suddenly on his claws. Ugly, sharp things. They cut everything he wants to just gently hold. Sometimes he worries that even Choo will be affected by them. “They were essentially putting humans into extreme environmental conditions and stresses to see if they would adapt or... mutate. They were tryin’ t’ make mutants.”
He drops the clawed hand now- expression still completely apathetic. He doesn’t feel much on the outside- not yet. He just blinks coldly and turns to Lu Han once again.
“I was one of their experiments. They called me Anomaly at the time.” That word tastes terrible in his mouth. That old name was only used when they were talking at him- about him- never to him. No one uses it when they need him to answer. He doesn’t realize that he’s still talking- that he’s still going on. His mind is reeling back to that time slowly- but still far too quickly for him. He stares at Lu Han, but the gaze is going through him. His mind is in the memories.
“They ran various experiments on me to attempt to push my body to an extreme. They wanted me t’ break, so I’d have no choice. I can remember swimming for hours... hours and hours and then sometimes I wouldn’t be able to do it anymore. I’d be freezing and I’d just give up. The water started to sound more inviting than straining my muscles any more. So I’d sink. Things would go black. I sort of treasured that- the dark. At least when I was unconscious...” He pushes a hand through his hair. How can this all seem so normal. “But then I’d wake up again. They’d get the water out of my lungs and they’d tell me to go again. I’d get thrown back into the water and if I started to act like I wasn’t even going to try to swim they’d send a current through the water- just a little one. They said they couldn’t just let me die...”
“I guess because I was expensive or something. They said I was one of the few test subjects that would keep going... Sometimes they said that. Never to my face. They never really talked directly to me other than to explain the tests. Just said that Anomaly was this or that. Then they’d come in, cut me up, hang me or try to drown me... Sometimes they pretended they’d reward me too...”
He stops finally. His mind has broken in it’s thoughts and he just rubs his eyes- tired. He’s still in that place in his mind, but he’s trying to be a little more aware of his own surroundings as well. He glances at Lu Han, finally. His glance is no longer so heavy that it cuts through reality. He lets his eyes go half-lidded as he stares. He’ll keep going if he’s not stopped. He really just doesn’t know better at the moment.
Before he says anything, he shifts his position, inching closer to one side of the bed than the other. He already has a long-standing habit of being more right-side aligned of the bed than, say, settling for the middle (even when the bed’s more than enough to accommodate him ─ and Wonshik, at that ─ he’s still so used to sleeping closer to the edge than not; it’s almost unconsciously ingrained in him, now); he doesn’t have to move much before he’s throwing an expectant look and a slightly raised brow towards Wonshik in the dark.
(He’s sure to pull one of the spare pillows down in an attempt to separate himself from the ‘probably will be ignored at some point in the night anyway’ space behind him.)
“What’re you waiting for? Get up here and get to sleep.”
He lifts his head from the bed very slowly when he hears Hongbin move- almost feels it in the way the bed moves. His eyes are that well adjusted to the dark of the room, but he tries to focus in on Hongbin. His roommate is moving ever so slightly- just enough to the side that there’s room for Wonshik as well. Bin’s staring at him, and there’s just a blank look on his face. It isn’t until Bin talks that his mind actually wraps around the fact that this is a response to his question. His eyes fall to the floor for a moment before his body moves on it’s own. He stands shakily and pushes himself onto the bed.
It’s comfortable enough. He doesn’t really want to be under the covers for fear of the sensation they might make when they touch him, but he’s currently more afraid of the cold. He pulls the sheets up slightly before glancing over at his roommate. Most people wouldn’t do this. Most people would probably just tell him to get over it and push him away, but Bin cares. It’s such an odd idea, but also... Fits. It fits that things have changed. Shik himself is happy with the change. He cuddles a little further into the bed- ignore the slight shots of pain that go through his body. Those are always there. It’s nothing... He’ll be ok.
He looks up at Bin with somewhat tired eyes. He knows that he needs to be careful if he can. Normally when he does this he ends up with his arms wrapped tight around his roommate to the point that he’s pretty sure the poor guy might melt. It’s just a bit too warm for that kind of thing... Plus, Bin’s been hurt too. Wonshik doesn’t want to make things worse- to hurt Bin with his own desperation. So he plans to try not to get too touchy, even if that means not sleeping.
But it doesn’t stop him from very gently hugging his roommate- more just draping an arm over him. He rests his head against the crook of his neck and gives a very small sigh... The fact that his face is blood red is likely a guarantee, but it’s dark. Bin probably can’t tell, right? Not that he’d realize what it means anyway. The fact that Bin’s oblivious is sort of a good thing sometimes.
“Thank you... I’m... Real sorry.” He smiles just a little before pulling himself away from the other man. He rolls back into the bed- again doing his best to ignore the way there’s pain shooting up his spine. He balls up just a little. That feels better somehow. It doesn’t really help, but it’s... psychosomatic. It’s worth something.
“I’ll try not t’... touch your ribs or anything.” He blinks a little now- eyes feeling heavier than he’d like. “You’re... You’re really the best.”
This is how they are, or rather were, though there’s no one armed with corrective tools, no active barks of warning to enforce “good behavior” in the interest of self preservation. He’d made it all the way to the elevators of the ground floor of the building before his temper won out, more than one camera in the male dorm left with wires slashed and hanging while one of the vending machines was left precariously tilted after climbing on it proved an unsteady venture. Now stood outside over a mess of popped tires and ripped seats at one of the communal bike racks, being chastised by the huge porcupine that’d caught his attention unlike most others at the facility, he’s a little more calm.

What an absolute little shit. Wonshik’s expression only takes an even more twisted turn- teeth bared and shoulders stiffening up as he glares. This guy is so stubborn. It’s not that Wonshik doesn’t get it. Being a mutant is living hell- a lot of humans like to take what’s different and play around with that difference. They do different stuff. Mutants are oddities and humans are too fascinated by them. Shik always been able to see why exactly it is that Hyuk acts the way he does. They just disagree blatantly because of a large difference in their experience. Shik started human and humans were still cruel to him then. All humans- mutant, anything... Everything is capable of being the absolute worst. What you are doesn’t really effect how people will treat you every time. Sometimes it doesn’t matter. Some people might even treat you better because you’re “different”.
But Shik just lets a growl bubble to the surface- brows furrowed and claws stretching even more. He knows good and well that beating the living hell out of Hyuk isn’t worth anything, but it certainly does sound appealing sometimes. In the end, all that would do is make the two of the enemies, though. That’s not what Wonshik wants, so he’s holding back the rage and just shaking his head instead. It’s not like he couldn’t kick the hell out of Hyuk if he wanted. He’s pretty sure he’s got the clear advantage... He’s not sure that the gorgon would admit it, but that doesn’t change much. Most people don’t like to admit it when they might lose.
“I ain’t sayin’ bullshit. You’re just a stubborn piece of shit.” He snarls at the end of his sentence- rolling his eyes. “Ya’ gotta remember that I got a way thicker skull than you, though. If think you’re gonna’ win butting heads with me I think you’ve lost sight of the spikes.” He grins at that- still gritting his teeth with anger. It’s not like he’s able to just throw his anger away. Under the smile it’s getting harder every second for him not to make an attempt to smash Hyuk’s head into the nearest object- but he’s not like some other people he knows. He’s plenty capable of controlling his anger.
“I’m may not be the smartest, but I ain’t a fuckin’ idiot. I’m not sayin’ you can trust the foundation completely. I have no clue about all that shit... But what I AM sayin’ is that the bike you just fucked? Yeah, that’s a potential’s. You probably just wrecked some poor kid’s bike that they use t’ get to school or somethin’.” He shakes his head- smile gone. He takes a few steps closer- though not close enough to come across as a threat. He’s still not trying to start a fight. He’s just trying to scold the idiot in front of him. He doubts Hyuk’s capable of changing quickly, but even small things might help.
“In fact, I’m pretty sure almost none of the faculty here uses bikes.” He snarls again- glancing at the pile of wreck. “As for you’re little meat shield comment, I’m gonna’ let that go for now... I don’t think you understand the concept of protecting people...” Shik leans against the wall now- claws ready just in case. It’s likely enough that Hyuk wouldn’t understand protecting anyone... After all, it doesn’t seem like Hyuk has anyone he cares about. It’s hard to learn to protect when you don’t care what happens to anyone...
That’s probably why Shik makes some sort of effort to be friendly. Sure, he’s still growling and wanting to fight, but he’s not doing anything yet. He’s just scolding Hyuk. He said it well enough earlier. The two of them are some weird definition of the word friends. Shik’s just pretty sure Hyuk doesn’t know what to do with one of those yet...
Yet even as judgment has been passed onto the male, there is much which has never been addressed – most of it being related to the way he looked. To consider asking about such details made Lu Han feel awkward, as he inwardly knew that there was no place for him to make such questions. Fate has a say regarding this too and, as a result, it is during one of their meetings that the topic gets brought up unintentionally. Smiles and laughter fade away and meld into a look of horror as a scream rips from Wonshik’s throat. The distance in between them is lengthened by shaky steps are taken in retreat, followed by the elder’s hand being drawn back from the place upon it rested moments ago.
“Wonshik-ah, I…” the words catch themselves in his throat, which feels awfully dry. Has the pat delivered to the other’s back truly been so strong as to cause such a reaction? It couldn’t be. “I apologize, I meant no harm with the gesture,” yet Lu Han’s chest tightens at the sight, an apology hardly feeling sufficient for the reaction which he unintentionally elicited from the younger mutant.
Wonshik is not the kind of person who will ever turn down a conversation. As it turns out, he adores getting to talk to just about anyone, no matter their oddities or differences. Lu Han (Or just “Lu Hyung” as Wonshik has blatantly taken to calling him) just so happens to be one of the many people that Wonshik has found himself talking to and enjoying the company of in more recent times. The guy’s sort of soft, at least as far as Wonshik is concerned. He seems like he’s watching himself and Wonshik sort of worries in that way. Shik’s not the kind of person who feels a need to hide much. He never has.
But he isn’t about to bother Lu about it. He’s sure that what it is that makes the older man soft and somewhat reserved has its purpose. Shik himself can just smile and laugh all the same. He does his very best to come across as friendly despite his appearance. He’s still a little rough around the edges. When people first meet him, Shik’s pretty sure most of them assume he’s going to either take their money or beat them up, but he’s doing what he knows to fix that issue. He’s pretty sure Lu doesn’t have anything against him. It’s more likely that the older guy is just not asking asking the obvious questions because that’s... rude? Wonshik doesn’t like to think about it too much. Those sorts of things only make him worry.
So he finds himself sitting around and laughing as normal. He’s not sure when he apparently developed some sort of sense of humor, but people have found him more funny recently. He sort of likes the development- loves it, even. It feels amazing to think that someone might actually be able to get a laugh out of something he says. He’s still not sure what it is about him that makes people laugh, but he loves the sound so he’ll never complain about not knowing. As longs as other people are happy, so is he.
At least... Until something sort of interrupts the moment.
Pain tears through him with even the slightest touch. The slap on the back was enough to make him jump and scream. It’s not that he means to. His body still isn’t even near over it’s pain from his experience in the haunted house. He doubles over from the feeling- eyes squeezing shut tight and breath picking up pace for the moment. But Lu is apologizing and Shik does his very best to straighten himself out. He stands up again- one eye still shut for the moment. He sort of grits his teeth. The pain is fading quickly enough... It was just an unlucky moment- bad timing. He shakes his head and lets out a rough sigh. Both eyes open and his expression turns oddly blank.
“Nah... Don’t be. Ain’t your fault.” He pulls his claws away from his arm. He wasn’t even aware that he had slightly cut into his own skin there to try to somehow distribute the pain. It’s a terrible plan. It doesn’t actually work. He wishes internally that he would stop doing it habitually... At least his arm isn’t bleeding. “It was meant friendly. Don’t apologize to me. I should be the one sorry for scarin’ the hell out of you.” There’s a shake of his head.
“It’s... my power. I’m sorry for it.” He blinks and shifts his glance to the ground. “You didn’t do anything wrong. I just feel stuff way harder than normal people... Especially pain, right now. I can like... Ugh.” And he’s looking up again- a little disappointed in his own words. “I can feel like... everything. Types of metal, differences in fabric, all sorts of shit. It’s sort of nice because sometimes I can feel like... vibrations in the ground or whatever, but... It also makes things feel even stronger, ya’ get it? So my pain... sense. It’s... Amped.”
He shakes his head. His thoughts are more spilling out than anything again. He’s not exactly thinking about what he’s saying, more saying it before he thinks. He looks at his claws- expression suddenly blanking out entirely. He doesn’t recognize it. Not really.
A week without hearing from Wonshik felt so wrong, even if Hongbin had been the one to make the decision to stay away.
The idea that Wonshik could be anything but alive had conveniently not entered his thoughts until Hongbin’s hand settles on the doorknob. It’s a spark of unadulterated dread that he pushes aside with distinct swiftness ─ Wonshik’s not capable of dying, he thinks. Not in a place like that, for sure. There’s no point in stressing over the what-ifs of illogical outcomes like that.
He twists the doorknob, steps into the dorm with an air as casual as it’d be if he had simply gone out for a late night snack. His steps are silent, not by choice but as a consequence of his ability (one he can’t exactly claim to mind, really), but he stops all together when his eyes land on the familiar figure settled on the couch. The door barely closes behind him.
“Wonshik?”
He’s dead.
The “he” there is lost somewhere in his thoughts and he’s not sure if he’s talking about himself or the roommate he’s been missing. He’s been seated on the couch for as long as his memory serves him. There have been visits, people who he’s put on a smile for just so they don’t have to worry. Wonshik’s head has been so empty and so full all at once and it’s left him trembling and struggling to breathe. What’s he supposed to do, really? How is he supposed to act? He can’t think straight. His vision has gone in and out several times and he swears the last time he slept had to have been years ago.
It’s almost a form of personal torture. He couldn’t find Hongbin in that haunted house- in the waking nightmare. He searched but in the end he only found Yixing, and was he really any use to him? Despite destroying his own body Wonshik had managed to do nothing to save Yixing from pain. No, if anything he just gave the healer another reason to worry. Now he was pushing that exact same feeling off on everyone who came to see him. It was easy enough to lie to Hoseok- tell him that things were okay no matter how bad they seemed. If nothing else, they guy never asks questions. Wonshik has no clue if Hoseok actually believes him. It would probably make more sense for him not to.
He cradles his own head as his vision dips again. He feels sick. Every time his head starts to get dark there’s a jolt and he’s awake again. What if Hongbin comes back? What if he’s hurt? What if he needs help? Wonshik is the picture of a dog sitting on its owner’s grave. He’s far to loyal for his own good. He pushes himself up- nearly screaming at the pain. His throat’s too dry for that, though. All he manages is a low growl. It’s hard to ignore that everything hurts. The pain of being almost entirely torn apart by his own power is lingering twice as long as it should. He’s pretty sure most people would have died if they were him anyway, but no, not him. No, Kim Wonshik isn’t allowed to die from pain. He’s made to suffer- use that. His vision has yet to return and he can practically hear the voices from his days in the lab barking at him.
He hasn’t moved much in the past week- not except to care for the small rabbit in his room. He’s only eaten when it’s been necessary to make company believe that he’s feeling fine. He only drinks when his body becomes so dehydrated that he can’t keep his eyes open. The only thing he could call sleep is when his body feels like its had too much and he falls unconscious. It’s worse when he wakes back up again... Even the soft couch- the pillows- any of it... It’s too much. His body is completely overloaded with the pain and even the smallest touches make him panic- break down. He’s having more and more flash backs- more memories. Details of how Mutagen treated him are now no longer questions with vague descriptions- they’re full pictures with gory details. He finds himself recalling them without feeling anything. It’s like his mind empties when he thinks of them.
He thinks himself pathetic, but it doesn’t make him move. If Bin is going to come back, he has to be here. He has to be ready to do anything he can. That place was a mess. No one made it out unscathed and that only worries Wonshik more. Is it possible that he’s dead- that Bin is dead? Could he really have been killed and left there? No body discovered- no reports- nothing. He takes a deep breath and claws at his arms. There’s pain again- more than usual. It’s not even that heavy of a touch- it doesn’t break skin. He chokes on the pain though- body twisting and vision returning suddenly. He’s found it works to keep himself awake. As long as he doesn’t overload himself... The pain forces him to stay awake- to stay vigilant. He coughs lowly- having inhaled far to hard for his aching rib cage to handle.
How thin does he look...? When did he last look in a mirror? When did Hoseok visit, anyway? He feels like he’s lost weight- like his body is lighter despite the heaviness of the pain. He pushes himself away from the back of the couch- trying his hardest to lean on his hand. If he can help it, he’d rather touch as little of anything as possible. He’s used to pain in his hands more than anything- it’s his back that’s taking time to adjust. He hunches forward and lets out a breath. How late is it? When did he last pass out? Has he eaten in the last few days?
Is Bin ever coming back?
He shivers and his mind starts to pull away again. It’s cold now, that much he knows. He didn’t pay much mind to the drop in temperature. He’s been far more concerned with pain- which is exactly why he stripped off his shirt as soon as company was no longer present. Even the fabric can be too much... But now it’s so cold. He feels like he’s never been this cold before. He probably doesn’t realize he hasn’t turned on the heater. His body is shaking and it doesn’t help the pain. His mind practically screams for him to stop- at least he thinks it’s his mind. He doesn’t realize that his thoughts have been slipping out more and more recently.
“Cut it out! Stop shivering... Pathetic. Pathetic. Please stop. Please, please, please... It hurts! Fuck!”
His mind breaks down and he sees men in coats as though they matter- as though they still exist in the present and not just in his memories. He sees them with needles and metal rods. The room is freezing. There’s a dog. A man who thinks he’s so much stronger than all the others. Wonshik just jerks his head from side to side. He can’t do this right now. He can’t flash back right now. There’s no one here to talk to- no one to comfort him. He doesn’t realize he’s sobbing. Doesn’t realize that he’s begging out loud. He squeezes his eyes shut tight. Crying hurts for some reason. Maybe it’s just the combination with it and the cold. Maybe it’s the way the tears touch his face. His mind tells him it’s blood.
There’s a small vibration in the ground. It’s not a lot, but it’s enough to snap him out of it. His eyes open quickly- blinking away tears as he tries to see to the door. It’s so dark. His eyes are so blurry. But he can feel something. Someone is either about to knock or--
The door opens and he nearly jumps from his seat.
His eyes are wide and the relief of it all makes him feel like he can finally fully collapse. He doesn’t, though. No, not yet. He needs to make sure Bin’s alright. Needs to tell him something- anything. He’s on his feet within seconds despite how badly it hurts just to stand. Bin says his name and he smiles- weakly. He’s still broken physically, but he can feel something... Like his pulse has finally come back. Maybe he’s not so dead after all.
“Bin...” He stumbles forward. He doesn’t quite fall on the thief- not fully. He just... sort of catches himself on the other’s shoulder. It doesn’t matter either way. He just instantly grabs the smaller man and pulls him into a hug. It might be a bit too tight- but Shik’s got not clue of his own strength right now. He’s not even sure he has any strength. For all he knows he’s just weakly placing his arms around the other man.
He’s crying again. Bin is warm- so warm. He feels like he’s alive- he doesn’t seem too hurt. He’s real. He’s really there- really back. He didn’t leave like everything else. He didn’t disappear or sneak away forever like Wonshik has always been expecting him to. No, he actually came back. He didn’t just abandon Wonshik and leave him like some sort of stray dog. He’s back. He’s back, he’s warm, and Wonshik can’t even begin to stop himself from spilling everything as loud as his dehydrated throat will let him.
“Bin... Bin! I’m so fucking happy. I’m glad. God dammit... I thought you- you were dead. I thought you were gonna’ leave me. I thought you had left me! I thought I was gonna’ be all alone again, Bin. I thought I was gonna’ be alone in pain and just-- just back. Back in the cold and alone. Bin I’m so- I... I can’t believe you’re back. You actually came back. Bin... You came back. You... came back...”
He breaks into coughs. It’s probably very apparent now that he’s not doing well. He doesn’t look much like... anything. His mind tells him now that what he’s done is too much. He took it too far. He panicked far too much- was way to desperate. It’s now his mistakes all hit him at once and the pain feels magnified. He shakes again. It’s now that the cold is starting to feel even worse- now that there’s something warm. His vision blurs again- not exactly from the tears.
“Fuck... I’m sorry. Fuck...” He holding on a good bit tighter now. He isn’t even sure what to say anymore. His head feels... bad.
“I don’t think it’s your fault that people – well, that someone ended up doing such a thing,” he lifts his gaze from the ground to look at Wonshik. “People are unpredictable and sometimes, the ones that we care for most end up hurting us in unexplainable ways, I guess.” His shoulders lift into a small shrug to accompany the statement, before Yixing starts to speak again, “I still don’t think that it’s necessarily something that has you at fault. You… you aren’t responsible for another person’s actions and decisions.”
There’s slight impulse to say more, but it’s all held back at the realization that fingers would be pointed accusingly at the other person in cause and while they do seem to share a pretty heavy part of the blame, Yixing remains mindful of Wonshik and how he feels; that was – or, is – a person which he cares for and that is something which should not be regarded in a light manner.
There’s a weak smile still. He’s good at listening to others- good at going on and on when asked to speak up. He’s not sure he likes that second part at all. He sighs ever so softly- eyes unfocusing with the pain. His arm is still bleeding. He should really cover it up in some way- with more than just his hand. What does it matter, though? He’s dealt with so much more for so very much longer. So he just turns the wound away. If he deals with it there’s a higher chance he’ll just get used to it. He just needs to stop thinking about it.
He gives Yixing a weak glance- smile still in place. He’s got kind words. He’s a good guy with good words whose trying his best. There well placed words... They’re meant kindly but... They’re wrong. He props his face on his palm- clawed fingers curling just a little upwards to touch his cheek. He runs his tongue over his fangs. “Yeah... It sucks, I guess... But...” There’s a weak shake of his head. “I know I’m to blame for a lot of this. He-- I mean... She didn’t like me. I knew that much and all that. I guess I forced it on her somehow- my feelings that is. It’s really crazy far in the past but---”
He blinks. His heart drops. Yeah, for some reason it hurts more. He can remember everything that he went through for him. Was it really worth it? For someone who never cared about him- who made HIM do things he didn’t want? Was he the one who forced things? Really? He’s not sure. He can’t find the blame and the fault. He’s confused about how angry he is and how lonely. The feelings are still stuck in him because he’s horrible at letting go- Mutagen made sure of that. They used it to their advantage. But... His feelings are also elsewhere. They’re... Off. He’s aware of Hongbin- very. He’s far from blind to the fact that it’s similar to the way he felt about Kyung. But is that really worth talking about? Hongbin’s... not like Kyung, right? Yet Wonshik still treats it like they’re the same. He would do all of the same things for Bin that he did for Kyung.
He’d go back to that awful place for Bin.
“I did a lot for him.” He doesn’t catch himself talking because his mind is far to gone. “A lot of crazy shit because I was crazy over my head for him. I basically died for the fucker. I guess I’m still not over him... But... I am. I’m mad at him too. I’m angry and I miss him all at once. I know I shouldn’t... But I don’t... I’m sorry. I’m going on about this shit. You shouldn’t have to deal with it.” He comes back- head shaking violently. “Sorry Hyung. I’m sorry. Seriously, don’t think anything about this shit.”
“You didn’t mess me up!” Now he looks offended. He’s not. “The bruises are a thing but that’s just because I still need to work on the whole not getting purple thing, you know? I don’t even know if that’s possible, I think I just heal but the purple stays, I’m a mystery wrapped in a blanket.” He’s pretty sure that’s not how the saying goes. Anyway. “You look dejected. Don’t look dejected, please, it makes me feel like I just took your toys away and I wouldn’t do that. I mean, maybe if I wanted to tease you, but that’s not the point I mean – I don’t know what I mean.” Goddamn.
“If you don’t hit me then how do we know if I can handle it?” Baekhyun’s hands flail midair as if he is swatting flies away while trying to make some sense of his speech. He’s not even sure if he’s trying to console the one standing in front of him or just tell him that hitting him is just fine, masochism be damned. “Running is kinda boring, why are you doing it? Plus you get tired before I do and I’m faster. Sorta. Sometimes at least. Are you sure you don’t want to hit me instead? I mean, spar, yeah. And you can make up for the bruises as well while you’re feeling generous and all. I’m easily bribed after all.”
Sadness takes a slight turn for confusion the moment Baekhyun’s starting to speak up yet again. Wonshik’s staring with one brow raised a little more than the other and his posture shifts slightly. He’s still slouching, but he’s letting himself get a better look at the other guy. Is Baekhyun mad because he implied that he might have kicked the crap out of him? It’s not like he means it in a bad way... Baekhyun’s not weak. Wonshik’s just a mass of bone and points that sort of has a bad habit of hitting people way too hard. It’s not that Baekhyun is easily hurt, it’s that Wonshik hurts everyone too easily. Wonshik’s frown grows a little bit more and he finally moves a hand from his pocket to scratch the back of his head.
Yeah, he looks dejected. He’s not really sure about the analogy with the toys but maybe that’s because he’s not too bright. Plus, it’s earlier in the morning and he’s still really tired. At least Baekhyun seems to be just as confused about this whole situation as he is. The two of them probably look like idiots from the outside in, but Wonshik’s not one to notice that sort of thing or even think about it. So he walks a few steps closer and shrugs at what he’s pretty sure is absolutely nothing.
“I’m ok. Do I really look that upset? Ya’ don’t gotta’ worry about me, man.” He looks to the side a little. He doesn’t want Baekhyun to worry, if that even makes sense. He’s awful at hiding his emotions or whatever, but he’s still trying. “’Sides... I don’t think there’s much a point in me hittin’ ya’ if all it does is hurt ya’. It’s not like we’re gonna’ have t’ fight each other outside of sparring anyway... Right?”
He hopes that part is true. He’d rather not have a legitimate reason to fight Baekhyun, or anyone for that matter. He manages to smile just a little- finding Baekhyun’s comments amusing. It’s true that Baekhyun can run faster and probably longer- but Shik’s certainly not going to admit that. He can keep going with things for quite some time, he just has to have the desire to push himself... Normally he doesn’t, which is probably far better for his health. That’s not the concern at the moment though, so he just chuckles a bit under his breath. This whole situation is kind of... silly.
It’s a good break from how things have been.
“I’ll spar if you’re ok with it, but I don’t wanna’ end up beatin’ ya’ t’ the point I end up havin’ t’ take ya’ off to the medical ward or somethin’. If you’re hurtin’ we should just have breakfast or somethin’ like that so ya’ get time t’ heal.”
“If anything, half of Daybreak thinks you and Hongbin are going out!” he states emphatically, though not too loudly – he’s not willing to take this change of topic so lightly. “You don’t hide it well at all, Wonshik – I’m pretty sure the only person who doesn’t know is Hongbin, which…” Jaehwan leans his head down, fingers meeting his temples in a confused sort of frustration. “…Honestly is – pretty baffling in and of itself, but I think that’s just… how Hongbin is.” A little dense, to put it nicely. “And keeping it in – I don’t think it’s good for you.”
Jaehwan sighs, frowns a little before deciding it’s wrong of him not to address all of the other things Wonshik said, too. “Wonshikkie, if you think I’m… remotely good at ‘feeling shit’, then…” he sighs again, expression unpleasant. “I shouldn’t have feelings like that – at all. My mutation is already – doing strange things when it comes to Yixing, and I don’t – want that getting worse. Besides, he – I don’t really think he feels that way, anyway. We’re just friends, and – sometimes, Yixing is easy to misunderstand.” Denying his own feelings is beyond him at this point, but – having reasons why he shouldn’t feel that way is not at all.
Part of him wants to claw at the table, but he restrains the urge. He hates the anger- which only makes it worse. He doesn’t want to feel like he’s going to snap at Jaehwan- like he’s mad at him. He’s just angry in general... At life. It’s not meant to be directed at a friend. So Wonshik pushes it down again- as hard as he can. He blinks just a little- eyes trying to adjust again. They then widen and he practical chokes on air- coughing at nothing.
“Who the fuck thinks that?!” He’s roaring again- voice far to loud. He flinches when he notices there are eyes on him yet again. He cringes- curls in on himself a little. His claws gently scrap at his skin. When their glances are gone he finally looks up again. He’s half-pouting at this point. “I mean... Look, I don’t care what other people think of me and Bin. He’s not into me and that’s that. I don’t think Bin’s even capable of that kinda’ thing.” His brows furrow and a sigh escapes him. He wanted to change the topic... Not this.
“Bin doesn’t need t’ know. I don’t want him to... I already cause the guy enough trouble by doin’ all the shit I do.” His voice drops to being suddenly very quiet. It’s normal enough for him. He can’t stick to one volume, one anything. It’s got to be one of two extremes. There’s no middle ground when it comes to Wonshik. “I- Fuck, Jae... You know that ain’t what I was tryin’ to get ya’ t’ think. You and Xing are actually really refreshing t’ see.” There’s a hint of jealousy, but he keeps it contained.
“And don’t use that as an excuse. I know you’re worried about your power but... Fuck, man... You can’t let it stop you from livin’. He totally feels the same way as you. My skull may be thick but I’m not stupid.” He leans back now- chewing on his lip thoughtfully. He hates that Jaehwan’s so worried about his power. Sure, it makes sense... But... Wonshik’s not sure how to think of it. It’s not something he can completely understand. He has ways of understanding, but it’s not the same. No Potentials are really the same.
“Neither of us are good at feelins... But that shit shouldn’t... stop us, huh?”
Here we are guys! Shik’s Teir A Upgrade! I’ll also be writing up his post-event updates in just a bit. Still trying to catch up with everything @w@
UPDATED AND NEW APPLICATIONS
Bone Projectiles: He is now capable of separating his bones from his body and firing them at high speeds. This can allow him to create bone bullets or even something similar to throwing knives. He can shoot them in any direction and from any point on his body. (His favorites being his tail and fingers).
Inhuman Strength: Due to the density of his bones, Wonshik has inhuman strength. He is capable of lifting things up to about 4 tons (2 cars), but this causes incredible amounts of straining on his musculature, which wasn’t really made to do that sort of thing. Usually he can only lift something incredibly heavy for a very short period of time before the pain becomes unbearable. This leaves his muscles in terrible shape (ripped, mostly) and often results in him needing to be hospitalized. The more he does this, the stronger his muscles become, though. It’s just a very slight increase in how much they can take each time.
Increased Sense of Touch: Something about the experimentation has given Wonshik a very strong sense of touch. He can feel the difference between most surfaces without even seeing them, down to kinds of wood if he’s felt them before (and cared to remember). His sense of touch is so strong that he can also feel vibrations in the ground, allowing him to tell when people around him are moving. This can be done to an almost incredible scale.
Regeneration: Wonshik can heal injuries of excessively large scale within about a day (assuming the injuries are bandaged. This appears to somehow be psychosomatic). This leaves Wonshik looking completely uninjured. However, the pain of the wounds now lasts about twice as long as it normally would. Despite seeming uninjured, the injuries will still hurt if touched or basically at all.
Adrenaline Rush: When in excruciating pain, Wonshik’s body kicks into overdrive. His body will go numb for a very short period of time and he will act almost fully on instinct. While Adrenaline Rushing, his strength is doubled and he also seems to be able to move at a quicker speed. Currently the adrenaline spikes only last for about 5-7 minutes, but during those times Wonshik will feel no pain and appears to be unstoppable by anything short of death.
NEW AND UPDATED LIMITS:
Increased Sense of Touch: While sometimes an advantage, this also includes the amount of pain he feels. If something hurts, it REALLY hurts. He has a high pain tolerance, but the pain from even small things is now excruciating to him. Even small things brushing against him make him uncomfortable, and as such, he has become far less ok with being touched.
Extended Pain: When Wonshik is injured, he feels the pain of that injury twice as long as a normal human would. This time appears to start from when the injury is healed and NOT when it is sustained. If he leaves an injury un-healed, then it will hurt even longer than one he heals quickly.
His hand all but swat away Wonshik’s, lightly chiding ─ “You’ll claw your brains out,” ─ and take to carding through the mussed strands in their place, languid and soothing, repetitive and nearly automatic.
“You’re not. Even if you were, s’not like I wouldn’t get you out,” Hongbin mumbles, reaching over for the nearly full bottle of water at his nightstand.“You’re fine, Shik. There’s nothin’ wrong with my room. Here ─” It’s not like he can’t see properly ─ his eyes have long since adjusted to the lack of light, but he still manages to somehow press the bottle to Wonshik’s cheek instead of where he’d meant to; though to be fair, he had no clue where Wonshik’s hands had fallen to. “Drink. Water.”
He’s still shaking, but he doesn’t try to fight back against any of Bin’s movements. His own claws are replaced by Bin’s hands- soft hands- and he relaxes ever so slightly. It’s such a simple action, but it’s enough to make him feel just a little better. He still feels guilty for doing this- for running in screaming. His head is still a jumbled mess but there’s something there to keep him grounded. Bin’s hand is enough to remind him that he’s not there, even if it still feels that way sometimes. He’s safe here in Daybreak, safer than he was. He has things here- things he can hold onto and hopefully never lose. He can keep them... He just has to be aware of it. He needs to keep the things he cares about safe. He can do that...
“’M... Not.” Is about all his mind lets him formulate at first. He’s just repeating- trying to let the words sink in. It’s not the most comforting thing in the world, but he sticks to Bin’s every word- lets them sink in and repeats them in his head until he feels like he understands every part of them. Bin would protect him- get him out if he went back to some hell like Mutagen. That’s right. Bin care about him too. They’ll be ok. He has people here that will make sure things are ok, and he can do the same for them. That’s the big difference. That’s what he has here.
He’s slow to grasp the water bottle when it presses against his face. It’s cool, and it almost makes him jump. His mind is still too far into his nightmare to process what it could possibly be until he’s staring directly at it. He just blinks a few times- mind trying to wrap around how he’s supposed to drink it. He manages to twist the top within a moment, though. He downs probably half of the bottle. He wasn’t even aware he was thirsty or just how badly his throat hurt... He places the bottle on the ground- top back in place. He’s managed to stop shaking. His breathing is still a bit uneven, but it’s ok. He’s ok.
Clawed hands move far more gently than might be expected of someone like him. He’s always so brash and violent- quick to move and seems like he could kill with one hand. He looks like he’d hurt someone on accident, and normally he probably would. But he’s soft with Bin- at least he tries to be. He finds the other’s hand and grips it weakly. He doesn’t really want to go back to sleep. He’s sure if he does the nightmares will come back full force... But maybe it will be different if he stays here.
“Sorry.... Bin. M’ sorry. Thank you.” His voice is still off, but he ignores the way it sounds. He doesn’t like to think about it. “Can I stay here?” He normally wouldn’t even ask. He often crawls into his roommate’s bed and settles beside him as though there’s nothing odd about it. Bin never seems to mind, so he’s never bothered to ask. This time is different, though. For some reason, he can’t bring himself to just do it. There’s an odd fear looming over him- an assumption that doing anything could lead to him somehow going back to his nightmare. So he tightens his hold on Bin’s hand just a little more- shoulders stiffening and hiding his face in the bed. He lets out a louder breath- feeling like he might cry again.

Physically, Shik seems fine. He was completely destroyed in his fight with Behemoth and lost a ton of blood. The amount of bones he used spiking out of his body basically ripped enough holes in his skin to the point that he would’ve died, but... His healing factor did it’s thing. Shik was fully “healed” in a day’s time and allowed to leave the med bay.
Unfortunately with the way that Shik’s healing factor works, he’s now in excruciating pain. Even touching things is so painful that he is having a very difficult time sleeping.
He’s a little mentally unstable and notably acting far more animalistic than normal. He might snarl at someone or bare his teeth more than usual... A lot more.
With Hongbin’s disappearance, he’s failing to take care of himself. He’s lost some weight from his failure to eat and he isn’t sleeping on top of that. So he’s pretty much on the verge of passing out at all times.
Life:
He’s extremely worried about the other members of daybreak who went to the haunted house. He wants to see everyone, but he’s not leaving his room, so he’ll have to see them later unless they come to see him.
He’s mentally a wreck. He blames himself for Hongbin leaving, even though that makes no sense at all. He’s far more likely to put himself down visibly.
He might actually bite you or claw you if you catch him off guard due to the whole animalistic thing. Especially if he’s having flashbacks.
He is not leaving his room until Bin comes back. He’s just sitting on the couch and staring at the door. The only times he’s sleeping or eating are when he blacks out and when people come over and seem worried.
His nightmares are in full force and he’s remembering more and more of his time in the Mutagen lab. Anyone who lives close by might hear him screaming from flashbacks and generally panicking, especially while Hongbin is still gone.
In short, he’s a total mental mess and in enough pain to not want to move hardly at all. He will pretend to be “ok” for anyone who visits him, but isn’t a great liar. If anyone tries to point out his condition, he might talk to them about his problems, but will likely do everything he can to put them off about it and end the conversation.
Cursing under his breath, he steps away from the door and desperately looks around for a place to hide. Going under the bed is out of the question, given the sight he’s met with and the state in which the furniture is found and the space between the wardrobe and wall is far too small for him to squeeze in between. So his last resort is to hide underneath the desk, which he rapidly takes – drops down to all fours and crawls underneath. Back’s pressed to the wall and legs get drawn up close to his chest, all while hands come to cover both of his ears to try and block out the cries and shouts of those on the outside.
His eyes fall shut and he squeezes them tightly, silently hoping that this is all a nightmare that he will soon wake up from.
A normal reaction to people screaming is, in fact, to scream along. Most people react to panic situations by panicking themselves. While Wonshik can’t say that he doesn’t panic, he can say that it’s not the same. There’s a scream somewhere in him- buried by his immediate reaction to seeing blood and violence. His teeth are bared in a full snarl and his eyes dilate to attempt to adjust to the low lighting. Hands are tensed- ready for longer claws to be formed if necessary, but the time never comes. The panic continues and he’s pushed away slightly.
This is likely his fault. This haunted house- that was his idea. He wanted to come here as a group because it would be fun. Hongbin had been so quick to agree that Wonshik’s excitement had increased tenfold by the time he was yelling about it to Jaehwan and Yixing. The other two hadn’t been quite as excited, but they had come along none the less. Jaehwan had thought it fitting with the season, and Wonshik couldn’t agree more. Sure, he could be a crybaby about ghosts and ghouls, but he didn’t believe at the time that the haunted house would turn out so poorly.
Of course, that was before the haunted house turned out to be a far more real nightmare.
Bodies drenched in their own blood- people panicking, really it wasn’t something he was prepared for. If someone blinked they could have missed it, but Wonshik’s eyes had been open the entire time. Things happened to quickly and... Here he is: shoved away from the people he came in with. His eyes are wide as he searches- panic setting in. Not again. They can’t just disappear on him again. They might end up hurt like at the festival- they might end up worse. His mind flickers to memories of things he had almost forgotten and his body shakes. He won’t have the things he loves taken from him.
His body has always worked faster than his head. He’s pacing away from the main room- mind set on finding the three he came here with. He suddenly realizes he can feel the buzz in the ground of people moving around- panicked and fleeing. His mind reels as he places a hand against the wall. Something in him... aches. He shakes his head a little.
Why can’t his powers help him track them down? Bone abilities... What a joke. Those are useful in any situation. Sure, he’s strong but only to a certain point. His body falls apart when he even uses his mutation. He grits his teeth and a growl surfaces He’s... agitated, to say the least. This is far to reminiscent of things in the past. Torture sessions that were sometimes greeted with companionship that got torn away before it could even truly grow. He pushes further against the wall- body shaking. The spikes on his arms grow a bit longer unconsciously.
Eyes dart around a cold, dark room. Breath is heavy and skin coated red. There are few things here- only what’s necessary. Yet he can hear them- the people next door. The screaming from the other labs and the sounds of voltage shocking through them. He’s more than aware of what’s happening. There’s panic coming from inside the room and his eyes jolt straight to the subject. A dog- whimpering. He reaches out- hand black and blue- red. He’s soft with it. The touch is light to spare them both the pain. The screaming in the other room only gets louder with every minute. He takes the comfort he can get.
He shakes his head hard- lip bleeding from the indents his fangs have left. This isn’t Mutagen. This isn’t his lab. He has the authority to fight back here- the ability to stop what’s happening. His companions this time won’t be lost if he can just find them. In his mind’s broken state he had lost track of his movements- quick and aimless. He’s standing near a door. He blinks- suddenly confused. His claws scratch the metal of the doorknob as he turns it. He’s too stressed to watch the amount of pressure he uses- the damage he causes.
He steps into the bedroom far noisier than most probably would. His concern for his life is low- though the concern for others is high. He needs to find them... He’s normally not perceptive- far too distracted to notice little details. He’s moving slower now, though. He wants to see what the house holds- if there are any traps set to make the night that much worse. The state of the room is a disaster, but he’s not one to say much. There are days when his own room looks a bit like this. The claw marks, the ruined sheets... the... blood. He curses under his breath. He really could be straight out of horror movie if he tried.
He paces through the room- silent despite his breathing. His eyes are narrow as he glances around. It’s then he finally spots something out of the ordinary. A foot- just one- is sticking out from underneath a desk. Perhaps it’s dumb of him, but he recognizes the shoe. His movements are far quicker as he rushes over to the desk and drops down on both knees. He still how to hunch over to truly see under the desk- clawed hand gripping the ledge. His expression remains worried, but he’s just a bit relieved at the sight.
“Xing...” His voice is low- quiet. “Xing, it’s me. Wonshik. Fuck, man, I was so worried. Everyone just disappeared and I thought... I dunno’. Are you alright? Hurt anywhere?” He’s probably asking too many questions, but he honestly can’t help it. There are far too many emotions washing over him all at once. He grips the desk harder and bites his lip just a little. He’s reminded immediately at the action that it’s bloody and hurts, so he quickly wipes the red away. He looks at the substance and just shakes his head. He looks at his friend once again and gives a smile- weak- but the best he can really manage.
“Come on, man. You don’t need t’ hide anymore. I’ve gotcha’. We gotta’ find Bin and Jae.”
“If it’s like this, I think you’d have to move into Hongbin-hyung’s room just so there’s enough space! It’s the biggest one I’ve seen so far though, so hopefully it won’t come to that.”
He’s not sure when this all started. Hoseok is a good guy- younger but he’s always got a smile on his face and Wonshik admires that. He finds it amazing that Hoseok is always so accepting- willing to listen or deal with just about anything. He’s too good, honestly. Far too kind to be dealing with someone as troublesome and generally obnoxious as Wonshik finds himself. He leans a little further back on his bed- eyes becoming half-lidded at the time. He’s just a bit tired, but he really doesn’t want to think about it. Even if he does manage to fall asleep, his mind won’t let him stay that way. Things have been rough recent- the dreams are getting louder. He feels moreI and more like there are actual needles sticking in his skin- real cuts and burns. He smiles to himself. Now’s not the time to think about nightmares. He’s talking to Daybreak’s sunshine. He shouldn’t let himself get too down.
“Ahh~ I really hope he can’t jump too high.” He mumbles just a little- voice deep from lack of sleep. “But he’s awful small. I don’t think he can get that high... Plus, even if he did, I don’t think it’ll matter. He’s asleep on Bin’s chest right now so... Y’know. He doesn’t try t’ run off or nothin’.” He glances at the mirror beside him and chuckles just a little. It’s odd how he and Hoseok have taken to this. Small talk is very nice. Wonshik’s not exactly good at it, but if nothing else, he likes to just listen to Hoseok. The excitement over his new rabbit has far from warn off, too. It keeps the conversation rolling and that’s what matters in the long run.
“Woah! This one is huge! But it is really cool...” He opens his phone to look over the image- smile widening to show fangs. For once, it really doesn’t matter. No one is going to see him. Maybe he should take to calling people more often. There would be less comments about his looks if he did, but going out means a bit too much to him. He’d rather be told he looks like a freak or “danger” several times over than be locked away for too long. “I guess movin’ in with Bin wouldn’t be too bad, but I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t like that. Me movin’ out for a bunny, that is. Plus, when I sleep with him I sorta’ hug him a bit too tight and I think he overheats that way.”
Louder laughter escapes, but he does his best to keep it on the quiet side. He doesn’t want his previously mentioned roommate to wake up. He rolls on his side and hums just a little. He does want to get Choo all of the best bunny things, but honestly all of this stuff looks like it’s a bit... much? None the less, it’s sort of fun to get to look at. He sighs.
“I’m sure we can find somethin’ smaller though. Worst case, I get Choo a lil’ pen to play in and Bin and I can let him run around on the floor. I saw that ya’ can litter train em’. So that’ll work too. He’s little enough right now that it’s no big. I think he’s gonna’ stay that way too?” He glances at the mirror again. His reflection is something he hates... Hoseok is too good to be staying up for him.
“Lemme know if ya’ get tired too, ok? No need for ya’ to push yourself any further than you normally would for me.”
