Danielle Toronyi is a landscape architect and multi-disciplinary artist who is focused on how we collectively experience, change, and learn from artificial, constructed, and/or living systems. Her work comprises unbuilding/anti-tecture pro-land urban landscape projects, environmental data-driven multimedia installations, body-focused performance, and painting and drawing.

Danielle holds a Masters in Landscape Architecture from North Carolina State University's College of Design. She earned her Permaculture Design Certificate in 2011 and a BFA in Painting & Drawing from The University of the Arts in 2006. She currently lives and works in Philadelphia.

ECOLALIA

Ecolalia is an immersive sound and light site-specific installation that utilizes ecological geospatial data to echo the ecoregion of a developed site. This installation is modeled off of data gathered from an equivalent local ecosystem. A selection of plant species from the ecoregion are represented in light and sound, each plant’s growth and decay rate based upon horticultural data and overlapping. Stripping away the living material, the system is seen, heard, and felt as a forest of code, echoing what once was, what could be.

Creating this entry point through sound and light allows the viewer into the intricate, intertwined data flow that is the living world. There are moments of quiet, moments of cataclysmic overwhelm, and subtle moments throughout time. This stripped down system provides another way into our living world, provides a way for the viewer to process varying durations and timescales.

Abstract

Autistic people may share a similar neurological dysfunction in regulating perception and integration of complex sounds. Acoustics are a dominant sensory component of the city and may significantly impact Autistic people’s experience of the urban environment. In this reflection, I propose a research project comprising (1) a qualitative evaluation of Autistic adults’ sensory and acoustic experience of urban space through an embodied ethnographic study, (2) a systematic review of existing literature, (3) a comparative analysis of the ethnography and the review, in order to develop (4) guidelines for inclusive design which accommodate the auditory and sensory needs of Autistic people.

In March, I will attend a one month remote song writing workshop with Arca through the School of Song, and would benefit from having the ability to reflect on, practice, and absorb what I learn in that environment. My interests and work also include remixing field recordings of varied environments, and I'd be invested in analyzing the space through these processes.

Looking good in blossom or covered with fruit is the small tree Cydonia oblonga (quince). This plant can also be a large shrub and there are number of cultivated varieties. The solitary, pale pink to white flowers are produced in late spring and followed by edible, aromatic, golden-yellow fruit.

i hate that concerns about urban gardening/foraging safety is often met with "What are you, a cop?" scorn. I believe it's a suspicion of anything that hinders the punk/anti-system urgency to jump in immediately and do whatever feels right.

Safety, ethics, and sustainability are all a part of urban gardening and foraging. I'm sorry that means you need to do homework before you can do anything, I know that sounds lame. But life is complicated.

I know anti-intellectualism is viewed as activist these days, but like, surely you don't want to literally eat lead, right?
