idk who needs to hear this but it’s healthier for you to just accept that you’re gonna be kinda fat than it is to live the rest of your life miserably trying to monitor yourself to maintain a skinny weight your body doesn’t want to hold onto
“nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” what feels even better is living a life where your self-worth isn’t entirely dependent on your thinness and you don’t constantly monitor and shame yourself. attaching the tweet that was worth at least five hours of therapy for me

THIS WILL ALWAYS BE MY FAVORITE VIDEO ON THIS WEBSITE
I bookmarked this months ago and it still makes me laugh until I can’t breathe
this is in yiddish too!! shm-reduplication, so phrases like "fancy-shmantzy" (implying mockery). and not only in hindi ("chai-shai" for tea and snacks) but it also filtered into english used by hindi speakers—e.g. my mother-in-law would always say "party-sharty" to mean a party and then the afterparty/hangout following. it's so beautiful :')
@lingthusiasm i don't think we've had an episode on this? ::wiggles eyebrows::
English also had a nicknaming form in the late 18th-early 19th century like this. it involved switching the first letter of a consonant-led name with a P and hyphenating it; the most common example is Peggy and Polly as nicknames from Margaret (Margaret > Meg > Meggy > Meggy-Peggy > Peggy and Margaret > Moll > Molly > Molly-Polly > Polly), but I've also seen "Sal-Pal" and "Sally-Pally" in c. 1810 letters from one specific family here in Boston
Mongolian does it too! Which is not a shock as such since it's related to Turkish... "Go to the shop and get lemonade, memonade..."
Do you need affordable sewing supplies? Do you want to help cut down on waste and fast fashion?
Do yourself a favor and check out Swanson's Fabrics! The physical location is in Turners Falls, Massachusetts, USA, but the online shop will ship to you!
I can't remember who first told me about Swanson's, but they're a textile thrift shop that collects and repurposes donations of unused sewing supplies. Their physical location, The Stash House, offers community sewing resources and a studio. For non-locals (such as myself), their online shop offers fabrics, patterns, and notions. The shop restocks on Thursdays, and they have a constantly-rotating collection of items. If you like thrifting secondhand craft materials, Swanson's is for you!
Via their official "about" page:
Swanson’s Fabrics and notions are gifts from retired sewing stashes. They are the fabrics and supplies that sewers and fiber-artists naturally accumulate. I had a suspicion that the reason we all collect so much is that we didn’t have a place “good enough” to take it. So I made the place. Turns out I was right, and thanks to my community (and yours) of makers and crafters, I can resell these fine materials at a low, approachable cost. ALL FABRICS ARE $5.00/yd, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ARE MADE OF. REALLY. I MEAN IT. I KNOW. UNBELIEVABLE BUT TRUE! As we come to grips with the climate crisis, interrupted supply lines, and our dependency on slave-labor in far away countries to produce our cotton and fiber goods, we need another way to approach the fabrics in our lives. We have a massive resource of textile goods in our country and it is time to tap into it. Our attics, basements, thrift-store donation bins, and dumpsters are brimming with discarded fabrics. It is time to start making and trading for the things we need, and stop buying so much new stuff we don’t. We need to see ourselves as trash-rich. Customers at Swanson’s can pay for goods and services with goods and services. I accept trade of sewing and fiber supplies/materials, and trade for help in the shop. I hope to inspire you to make your own clothes, to mend the ones you have, to shop second-hand and alter things to your taste. There is a lot of power in dressing yourself. Custom is king, and you can’t have a revolution in your master’s clothes…. ❤️💪🏻 -Kathryn
The CovidSafeCosplay blog and its admin are unaffiliated with Swanson's Fabrics, and are simply sharing the resource.
Do you have a favorite place to get your crafting supplies? Share in the comments or via a reblog! Bonus points for those that prioritize sustainability, accessibility, community, and trade.
Lots of cities / areas have stores who also sell repurposed or donated fabrics! Here’s one directory of creative reuse stores. (Though ‘creative reuse’ is usually the key search term)
I get most of mine at Scrap in Ann Arbor (they also sell some items online) and New City Sewing Center in St. Louis.
Just once I want to be asked to participate in such a study
I got to participate in such a study, although probably due to the exact spots they stimulated, bliss wasn't one of the sensations provoked.
The best one they gave me was like a rush of electric energy, feeling like it welled up in the core of my chest and rolled out into my limbs like a wave (at which point I would have to wiggle my hands and feet to "shake it off"). I wouldn't describe it as unpleasant either, but it was kind of overwhelming, and after several jolts I'd feel like I'm done and want to take a break.
That one came from tickling my ventral capsules, which a little pacemaker-type device continues to do several hundred times a day every day in order to make me not severely depressed (at a milliamperage too low for me to feel it, mind you). They did also hit spots in my my amygdala, hippocampus, subgenual cingulate cortex, and orbitofrontal cortex, but none of those produced euphoria either. Brains are so fiddly that you can get different results from stimulating sites a fraction of an inch apart, so it wouldn't be surprising if they just didn't happen to poke whatever square millimeter of brain tissue does that for me.
I also occasionally have dreams about weird and off-brand variants on this sensation. Like probably once every five months or so. It's the only one that stuck hard enough to make it into my dreams. They're always cyborg anxiety/thrill dreams about being forcibly exposed to electricity or some powerful EM field or something that sets it off.
there was this other one which was Evil Wireheading. I forget which site prompted this one, but I'd very abruptly feel everything go distant and fuzzy, yet not in a losing-consciousness kind of way -- it kind of felt like I was the only thing remaining real while everything else got hazier. it made my eyes unfocus unevenly which didn't help. and imparted kind of a faint swollen feeling I can only describe in a synaesthetic way. Made me think of bubblegum reddish-pink and rubber balloons and the word "heee" but in a strained kind of way. Also I quickly started getting the inexplicable sense that something Bad would happen if they kept pressing that button. So they didn't try to find out.
"oh you're just being nice" JUST? do you have any idea how much work goes into this shit? JUST being nice? girl i am doing some supercomputer shit upstairs to construct this niceness. they installed laplace's demon in my brain to trace out the last hour of interaction and calculate the optimal thing to say to make you feel better. and i still somehow beefed it? JUST being nice? yeah and bach was "just writing songs" jesus fucking christ. people askin for cordiality like it's no big deal
listen to me, this is so so important: you've gotta get used to really giving it your 60% as a default. like don't half-ass it necessarily but try not to go over 70% or so of an ass. you'll feel better and live a happier more fulfilled life, and on the rare occasions where you do need to lock the fuck in you'll be able to pull off bullshit that the sad miserable wretches giving it their 100% can never dream off, because they're busy draining themselves dry and you have energy reserves to spare.
This is actually what I was adviced to do at the work rehabilitation program I went to. Hasn't left my mind since. 10/10 solid advice
me: sorry i’ve been busy
me for the last hours:
I saw a comment on your blog that says 'the way you eat does not cause diabetes'...are you able to expand on that or provide a source I could read? I've been told by doctors that my pre-diabetes was due to weight gain because I get more hungry on my anti psychotics and I'd like to fact check what they've told me! Thank you so much!
There are a lot more factors at play in diabetes — more complicated than “I had a cupcake at lunch.”
Pre-diabetes was rejected as a diagnosis by the World Health Organization (although it is used by the US and UK) - the correct term for the condition is impaired glucose tolerance. Approximately 2% of people with "pre-diabetes" go on to develop diabetes per year. You heard that right - TWO PERCENT. Most diabetics actually skip the pre-diabetic phase.
There are currently no treatments for pre-diabetes besides intentional weight loss. (Hmm, that's convenient, right?) There has yet to be evidence that losing weight prevents progression from pre-diabetes to T2DM beyond a year. Interestingly, drug companies are trying to persuade the medical world to start treating patients earlier and earlier. They are using the term “pre-diabetes” to sell their drugs (including Wegovy, a weight-loss drug). Surgeons are using it to sell weight loss surgery. Everyone’s a winner, right? Not patients. Especially fat patients.

Prediabetes: The epidemic that never was, and shouldn’t be
The war on ‘prediabetes' could be a boon for pharma—but is it good medicine?
Also - I love what Dr. Asher Larmie @fatdoctorUK has to say about T2DM and insulin resistance, so here's one of their threads I pulled from Twitter:
1️⃣ You can't prevent insulin resistance. It's coded in your DNA. It may be impacted by your environment. Studies have shown it has nothing to do with your BMI.
2️⃣ The term "pre-diabetes" is a PR stunt. The correct term is impaired glucose tolerance (or impaired fasting glucose) which is sometimes referred to as intermittent hyperglycemia. It does not predict T2DM. It is best ignored and tested for every 3-5yrs.
3️⃣ there is no evidence that losing weight prevents diabetes. That's because you can't reverse insulin resistance. You can possibly postpone it by 2yrs? Furthermore there is evidence that those who are fat at the time of diagnosis fair much better than those who are thin.
4️⃣ Weight loss does not reverse diabetes in the VAST majority of people. Those that do reverse it are usually thinner with recent onset T2DM and a low A1c. Only a tiny minority can sustain that over 2yrs. Weight loss does not improve A1c levels beyond 2 yrs either.
5️⃣ Weight loss in T2DM does not improve macrovascular or microvascular health outcomes beyond 2 years. In fact, weight loss in diabetics is associated with increased mortality and morbidity (although it is not clear why). Weight cycling is known to impacts A1c levels.
6️⃣ Weight GAIN does NOT increase the risk of cardiovascular OR all causes mortality in diabetics. In fact, one might even go so far as to say that it's better to be fat and diabetic than to be thin and diabetic.
Dr. Larmie cites 18 peer reviewed journal articles (most from the last decade) that are included in their webinar on the subject, linked below.
