dan and nicholas do not get along however ☝️ this is only because they only interacted for like. maybe 5 minutes. dan powell's ability to form friendship feelings for Literally anyone is quite possibly unsurpassed and i think nicholas would be more open to at least considering him possibly usable in the pursuit of power if he weren't in the immediate aftermath of the whole dad-ritual-cannibalism-attempt-turned-patricide-via-marble-bust-and-also-your-sister-has-decided-to-leave-your-dimension-possibly-forever situation — he was kind of on high threat mode. I think if you put did this to them it would work

i don't think they HAVE to be friends. obviously. i actually think it's more interesting to the story that they're so at odds, it's one of the reasons why i think not listening to s1 and s2 renders s3 kind of flat- it kind of slaps you in the face that one of the Big Protagonist Characters of the season is being genuinely threatening towards dan the way nicholas is in that scene. but they very easily COULD be friends.

contrasting the Dan and Melody (PLATONIC) (Netflix exclusionary) relationship with Dan and Rat's one is interesting to me because Dan and Melody's is kind of mutually parasocial and guilt based whereas Dan and Rat is like what if your favorite character came to your dimension and you got to torture and befriend them personally.
