Alys' backstory adds a really interesting layer to her beef with Alicent last episode. She knew Alicent was here to harm Aemond, fully intending to kill her own son, meanwhile Alys gave up her entire life and future in a failed attempt to save her own. It's no wonder she was so disgusted with Alicent. I really wish we got to see a longer scene between them.

When I watched Aemond wake up in the season 3 finale, I wondered why we didn't see Alys lie next to him, but then I realized she wasn't in the bed because part of her curse is probably that she never sleeps - Daemon asked her if she never sleeps in season 2, - so she is incapable of falling asleep next to Aemond, and that made me sad.

Gwayne being stuck in the wreckage & unconscious, only to have the first thing that comes out of his mouth the moment he regains consciousness be “Daeron” 😢 i am convinced this man’s entire world revolves around Daeron. Even Daeron’s own parents never loved him the way Gwayne does

I have much to gripe about this season, but my main complaint is that Aemond didn't spend nearly as much time being miserable and pathetic as he should have

there was no hallucinations about him killing Luke or his attempts to kill Aegon, no nightmares about him losing his eye or anything actually about his mommy issues-other than him hallucinating alicent fucking him (which was completely unnecessary and really gross)

he actually found some deluded sense of HAPPINESS??

yeah sure Alys manipulated and coerced him into a relationship, but there was little to no development on how that manipulation actually affected him

I feel like at the end of the day the only people who have actually understood Aemond's character are teenage girls writing fanfics, and let me just say, they're doing gods work

I love Alysmond so much and I love the idea that it explores older woman younger man because media often neglects that dynamic or makes it a joke but I need to sit with Alys’ show backstory a bit because while I loved her being a witch and her age ambiguous, the backstory they’ve given her bothers me at the moment. And I know why and I think it’s a bit symptomatic of the show as a whole.

The book is in the perspective of unreliable narrators, specifically they are misogynistic unreliable narrators which means when they say: she’s an ancient witch and midwife and disparage her, we as the reader are meant to question that.

Historically speaking the “witches” who got burnt were just women who one way or another challenged the status quo and were somehow knowledgeable about midwifery, healing etc. and we know George likes to mirror reality with his writing.

So for me, I filtered through the claims and landed at Alys being a healer and midwife who likely was a bastard daughter of someone of the Strong family. Possibly she had an affiliation with the castle and visions too, so some magic abilities because this world has that after all but still.

But her character isn’t the only one the show doesn’t examine properly with the misogynistic assumptions tuned out. They do the same with the two leads.

I’m still enjoying the show but I think what lets it down at the end of the day is that they never bothered to step back to examine what is embellishment via the unreliable narrators on a deeper level and specifically what is coming to us through the lens of a patriarchal, misogynistic viewpoint much like REAL history.
