Benjamin said in his interview that the Baratheon assassin scene seriously challenged Daeron’s perception of Ormund. Daeron spent so long believing Ormund was the person who would protect him but the attack forces him to confront the reality that the man who was supposed to be his protector is suddenly unable to act & reduced to vomiting. Meanwhile Gwayne becomes even more important to Daeron because he is the one who actually steps between him & danger. He recognizes the threat, reacts immediately & protects Daeron when it matters. That’s why Daeron clings to Gwayne & wants to stop him from leaving. he knows the situation is spiraling & Gwayne is the one with the clearer judgment, stability & ability to make rational decisions.
