In Harleigh’s mind they were always friends, the best kind. A friendship forged in something unbreakable. He was there when her world began, and he was there when it all came crashing down. Charles was a pillar standing strong in any storm. She often admired him for it. Even when it seemed all the things around him would crumble he managed to hold his own. She cherished the visits , the efforts he made to come out and see her and ask again and again if she’d join his school. Some occasions it was a tempting offer. But was she ready to throw herself into something like that? How long did a heart have to take to mend? How long until the sense of adventure would return to her? A sigh, very soft before she chuckled lightly watching Charles’ expression. “Fine. One weekend. If it will make you happy. And if it will make you stop asking.”
“ Of course it will make me happy. But I will never give up asking Harleigh, you mean far too much to me to ever stop asking. I believe you will enjoy it far more than you think.”
Of course there was going to be some sort of mayhem at the school, there always was. But then again it was the sort of life he wouldn’t trade for anything. Life, vibrant and full of energy -- and vaguely overwhelming.
His own feelings were pushed away, what she needed was a friend, and that is exactly what he would be. Because no matter the emotions, he could be who she needed. After all, wasn’t that what love was at the very base?
[ she takes it without hesitation and immediately she’s in the library again, crying for help. it was not the first time, and certainly not the last, but he’d always been there to hear her. he never failed to. ]
‘I never should’ve left. I– I tried to live in the city but I couldn’t. There were so many–’
[ shaking her head, her smile brightens. ]
‘But that doesn’t matter, I’ve always loved you and this place because you’re here. I’d like to stay, if I’m welcome.’
“ You’re always welcome here, whenever you need a place to go. Though I’m afraid I may no longer be offering rides, this place will always be your home as long as you wish it. “
There is a plethora of warmth in his tones, his hand slipping with hers easily, memories of his own came at the touch. A small confused girl willing to go to war with ghosts that weren’t even hers.
And her winning. She had always been a gifted child, and despite the difficulty of her gift, she had grown to excel under the lessons learned.
“ I may have anticipated it -- your room is unchanged. “
“Yes, please.”
Outside is – open, full of people who stretch their ears where they shouldn’t. Catching secrets not meant for them and suffering because of it. He gives a small nod. Smiling far out of sight.
“Clarke, by the way – most people call me by ‘Clarke.’ I’m sorry for not making any sort of appointment.”
“ We hardly function on any sort of formality here. After all things are a bit to hectic now a days for that. “
Gesturing for him to follow he moves towards the office, papers are in most cases neatly piled, but the few that escape their order are quickly brushed aside and gathered up. Setting in a seperate place as he clears a seat.
“ Of course Clarke -- Now what is it you wished to discuss? “
She’s skittish at best, endeared but not entirely convinced by the promise. It’s not that she doesn’t trust Charles, it’s simply that she thinks it’s too grand a promise for him to ever keep, no matter how much he intends to. “But what about you? Who’s going to protect you and make sure you’re safe while we’re here? Or even who’s going to protect you from the inevitable headache of constantly being near cantankerous infants? I’m glad we have a home, really I am, I just…think you need to think this through.”
Charles is a man who quite simply, will do anything to protect those who need it. A psychologist might say that he needs to be needed, yet the real truth was that he craved a world where he was not needed. Where a woman such as this could raise her children in peace and not fear. Where a man like Erik could find some sort of closure to his quest. But that world wasn’t here just yet --. And so he would do everything within his power to ensure her safety.
“ I don’t particularly think I’ll need protection -- and besides. I’ve been told I have quite a knack with children. After all, they can still think. Believe me -- I have thought this through. You are welcome here, for as long as you want to stay. Both you and your children. When there are students the twins may have companions as they grow up, whether they possess gifts or not. This is a safe place. I promise. “
“No, uh, I just wasn’t expecting to see you.”
“ And I don’t suppose this has anything to do with the fact it’s the end of May and the fountain is frozen solid -- again? “

“Given your enemies, you’re a man of remarkable strength of will to seek a peaceful path for those like you.”
“ I have never held humanity in animosity. Nor have I held mutants in such, we are all equal. Our gifts and abilities do not define us ---- we merely must learn to coexist in some semblance of peace. “

“It would seem I have travelled too far. You… no, it cannot be.”
“ And yet I am -- perhaps this is merely the -- alcohol speaking. But you look familiar, and not in an entirely welcome way. “
stillcharlesraven:
“Like you mind it, besides who else is willing to listen to your boring school stuff?”
She said and smiled at his touch, laying perfectly comfortable. Using him as a pillow was something she did since they were kids. Whenever she had a nightmare she would sneak into his room and snuggled with him in his bed, as he read something to her. They years had passed, but snuggling with him hasn’t. She was almost falling asleep when she heard his question and groaned in annoyance.
“That’s you’re stuff, not mine. Besides, I kinda forget what you were saying the entire time.”
“ Rather I mind it or not --- it still is rather sad you can’t stay awake long enough to even listen.”
Though he was used to her disinterest, yet it seemed as if she might care enough to at least feign a little bit more curiosity. After all -- she had inspired this more than anyone. His own mutation was simple enough, at least in his own mind. Her particular gift was something -- it was something he was forever in awe of. Perhaps he failed to properly show it, too ill at ease with the foreignness of it, to see or treat it as anything other than a quirk of genetic code to be studied.
“ I would listen to what you had to say --. “
