the point of this post is not swords. it is not how well someone can fight w a cane. the point is I want to see more disabled representation and I want to see characters who use canes and I want them to use them correctly and I want them to be just as fleshed out and interesting as their abled counterparts.
my cane user friend and I were talking abt sword canes just before I made the post so I tossed it in. I collect blades—knives, daggers, swords—and I’m also a disabled cane user who collects fancy canes. so I think combining the two is cool. I don’t even think they’d be good for self defense, I just think they’re a fun thing to show off to friends!
but this post has always, first and foremost, been abt mobility aids. this is abt being a young cane user who doesn’t see rep. I’d love to see highschool dramas where a character uses a cane but it’s not used to make u pity them, it’s just a regular part of their life. I wanna see fantasy cane users where the animal head handle speaks. I wanna see sci-fi cane users and cane users in romances and cane users in main roles.
I know abt canne de combat and bartitsu and the other fighting styles u can use a cane for. that’s never been what this post is abt. I just want to see myself in media.

My dad has a cane that has a dragon head, the first iteration being with red jewels in its eyes and I have longed to see someone like my dad in media since I was a young child. Someone who is more than their mobility aid and/or has a unique-looking mobility aid that says a lot about their character.

I mean, that's not *why* they were targeted. That's how they got away with it, but it's not why they were targeted. The Holocaust was absolutely about the Jews (and the Roma and Sinti), but we weren't the only people affected. The Holocaust was about protecting the Aryan race from any degenerates, which primarily includes Jews (and Roma and Sinti people, again), but also includes disabled people and queer people, and probably would have included any other people of color if they'd had enough time (kinayne hora). They started killing and sterilizing disabled people first, remember. The real reason queer people weren't targeted in the same way we were is because they weren't racialized and weren't likely to have children.

The short version of that post is that actually, yes the Nazis saw the Jews in very different terms from anyone else they went after. In the Nazi worldview, Jews were the enemies of all humanity and the cause of all evil and suffering in the world, and must be exterminated as quickly as possible. Nazism was built on antisemitism. It was not only a core princible, it was Nazism's driving force. If you don't understand this about Nazism, you don't understand anything about Nazism.
I’m autistic, I’m queer… but I’m Jewish too. If the Nazis killed me, it wouldn’t have been because of my autism or my queer identity; it would’ve been because of my Jewishness. None of us are trying to erase the disabled and queer lives lost in the Holocaust (right, guys?). But several people on here and irl have downplayed (or straight up erased) how the Holocaust impacted Jewish people (even the ones who didn’t have any familial connection to the event). They’ll even say, “oh, not that many Jews died in the Holocaust” when it is pretty well documented that six million Jews were killed by Nazis in the concentration camps (which isn’t limited to gas chambers).
This reminded me of the discourse around 2018ish on Instagram where queer people were trying to collect nazi prisoner armbands like they were Pokémon.
Like people were like "well I'm queer so I would've had the pink triangle, I'm asexual so i would've gotten the black triangle too, I am a leftist so I would've gotten the red triangle too"
Like bestie no, the only people who got multiple colors were jews, and even then you only got two. I'll include a picture of the classification system at the end.
Also people seem to forget why queer and disabled people were taken to concentration camps. It was because they viewed both as products of evil jew powers. It was jews making people queer and/or disabled according to Nazis. It wasn't just regular run of the mill homophobia and ableism, it was directly tied to antisemitism.
And like multifander said, none of this makes it any less terrible that queer and disabled folk were victims. Also, it is important to say that it was mainly queer men and trans women taken to concentration camps. iirc, no women were ever taken to a concentration camp for being wlw. There *may* have been a handful, but anti wlw laws were rarely enforced to that degree.
I feel as if the whole "oppression Olympics bad" has been misinterpreted badly in general but specifically when it comes to the holocaust.
Oppression Olympics refers to when people are trying to one up each other or dismiss someone else's oppression with their own oppression. Oppression Olympics is not speaking factually about what group experienced more oppression in general or with a specific event.
Factually jews were treated worse than queer people. Factually more jews died. Factually jews and roma had it the worst.
None of these facts minimize or dismiss the pain and suffering of queer and disabled folk during the holocaust.

ok so these new tariffs are likely going to be primarily affecting red states. i want y’all to ignore the urge to respond by saying the people in those red states deserve it because of the political representation we have. not because some of us are progressives but because this is an opportunity. if conservatives from these states start complaining about higher prices and financial strain, do not respond with “well you voted for this!” this is your opportunity to pull them to the center. say “wow that is really awful. i’m sure this isn’t what you wanted when you voted last year. you deserve representatives that will have your best interests at heart, you should let them know how upset you are! you deserve to be heard!”
because listen to me. republican politicians don’t give a shit about what progressives in red states have to say. they aren’t gonna change their voting trends for us. but if a bunch of small town conservatives start to get restless and angry with their politicians, if they lose support from their most important demographics, that has a shot at changing things. so swallow your pride and disgust and have a conversation with that republican truck driver instead of taking the pot shot that’ll get you 10 minutes of dopamine. do the hard work.

I’m not sure there’s any way of knowing for sure given the whole a lot of men don’t know they don’t know men can be abused thing. However since socially becoming a man and talking with other men as a man I’ve come across a lot of casually conveyed stories that have made me go yikes. Mega yikes.

During my internship, I saw another strange fellow. If you like the neck flexibility of the European wryneck you sure gonna love the Little bittern (Ixobrychus minutus). This bird is in the heron family (Ardeidae) but loves to shrink itself. But be warned ! They know where your eyes are and can launch their neck and beak real fast ! One tried to attack me while I was checking its ring and I was lucky to be just 10 cm too far. Despite this vicious attack I love this funny bird and he was quite easy to untangle and to ring. With colleagues, we nicknamed it the "Accordion of death"
