ASTRONOMY PICTURE OF THE DAY
August 12, 2026 at 05:00PM
On August 12th, 2026, the Moon totally eclipsed the Sun and cast its shadow across Siberia, Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal. Todayâs image features two total solar eclipses viewed from Zaragoza, Spain, one over the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar and the other reflecting in the Ebro River. For a few moments, Spain saw its first major total solar eclipse since 1905. Those witnessing totality may experience a chill in the air, the quieting of birds, the confused chirps of insects, and the shared awe of many. Itâs the coronaâs time to shine as the Sunâs bright disk is blocked by the Moon. Among other reasons to study eclipses, they help scientists understand why the corona is millions of degrees hotter than the Sunâs surface. Enthusiastic citizens can contribute to these studies by recording how wildlife responds, imaging the corona, and monitoring air temperature and clouds.

This was so fun to do. I have only made a lineup once before, and I like how I can see my improvement here, as well as the evolution of my style for them.

Maedhros: I talk a lot about Maedhros and HimringÂŽs fashion here - black is an expensive colour to produce, which is why I think it is sought after, with white, in Himring, since it is dark most year round, most residents pick one other colour that stands out, Maedhros here choosing the colour of his house, since Himring is hostile for a lot of plants, botanical embroidery and jewelry are a status symbol. The clothes are shorter than other Noldor clothes to better move through snow.
Maglor: Maglor, as a bard, can wear longer, more impractical clothes in his day-to-day. Clothes from The Gap have a less dramatic shape and usually lighter colours than clothes for Himring, as well as a division between colours, thus, Maglor wears red, grey blue, and yellow.
Celegorm: As a hunter of Himlad, Celegorm doesnŽt really dress up in Noldor court robes, and instead ends up with something between the Sindar and the Hunt of Oromë. He wears grey clothes in different shades with plant motifs on them to better blend in, and the clothes is cut so as not to restrict his movement on foot or horse.
Caranthir: I HC Caranthir as the richest of the brothers, which is also why he has so much jewelry, and so many textile techniques in his clothes - his clothes are meant to look heavy, and mirror Thargelion's wooden climate, with the bear fur, and dark colours.
Curufin: CurufinÂŽs clothes are very clothes to Nargothrond style, but a bit even in the cut, with more layers visible. He is wearing a lot of contrasting colours in his clothes, as well as jewelry that is both silver and gold, to stand out.
Amras: I like to think the Ambarussa was spending a lot of time hunting in their youth in Valinor, but when coming to Beleriand, only Amras kept on exploring the wild and made friends with many of the Avari, which is what his outfit is inspired by, a mix of Avari clothes and Noldor.
Amrod: I go with the crispy Amrod version here, and after the insident I HC he had a lot of chronic pain so he became more of a scholar, which is why he can wear so long robes, also to make up for his look I like to think he did a lot out of his clothes, making sure it was the finest, as well as his jewelry.
If you have aches or a runny nose, come to Kaius! His remedies might be odd, but they work (usually)! Kaius just wants to make you feel good with massages and herbal baths. â€ïž
Other fun facts: he has a thick Finnish accent, is always sweating, smells like birch trees, and doesnât trust modern medicineâŠ
Why do kiwis have such massive fucking eggs âitâs because they are related to ostriches and-â yeah ok but like why didnât they evolve smaller eggs if I was in charge I would do that shit pronto. Thoughts?
their big eggs are actually that size for a similar reason to human babies having massive heads!! being bigger at birth can be important.
kiwi are trying SO HARD to become mammals. fur-like feathers, whisker-like feathers, little beady eyes, nocturnal, great sense of smell.... that's basically a mammal!! they're well suited for life on the forest floor.
their big eggs work alongside these adaptations to give them a leg up in the bird world. their young hatch already feathered! they're precocial, which means they're born with the ability to open their eyes and move around. like foals.
big egg = more powerful offspring from the get-go. babies don't need to spend precious time vulnerable while they develop on the ground when they've already done all that in the egg!
(unfortunately, with the introduction of mammals to aotearoa, these adaptations are a little less useful...)
They look like one of the downsides of emerging from an egg fully formed is how aware you are off just having come out on egg.
First minute alive, already dealing with some fucking experience.
for those curious, this is joanne, a 15-year-old sumatran tiger currently living at phoenix zoo. it's very sweet to see her playing and tumbling around like this at her age -- she's got some people taking care of her if she still has this energy at that age.
i did see some users in the notes who were concerned about her looking 'scrawny', or wondering if she's maybe a juvenile -- far from it! at 15, joanne is very much considered a geriatric tiger; she's a grandma. she is, however, a sumatran tiger (panthera tigris sumatrae) -- sumatrans are the smallest extant subspecies of tiger, built more for the sweltering jungles of sumatra than the blistering cold of the amur river or the dense forests and mangrove swamps of south asia.
when you're used to seeing amur or amur-bengal hybrid ('generic') tigers on television or online, most of which are often overfed and overweight, a sumatran is going to look a bit weird, but joanne looks to be in wonderful shape -- look at those muscles flex and that coat shimmer when she moves! that's a healthy old lady for sure. props to joanne's keepers for taking such good care of her.
My personal headcanon for Ash Ketchum has always been that regardless of if his dream ever came true he'd never truly stop traveling and learning. Because despite "becoming a pokemon master" being his goal if you actually sit down and watch like Any episode of Pokemon the thing that always holds true is his curiosity and desire to learn everything he possibly can related to pokemon. And he'll try anything to! He did contests and the battle frontier. He'd do those silly little shows with Serena if they'd let him.
So I like to imagine him continuing on in life as this nomad who people don't automatically recognize as anyone important ya know? Just this goofy guy going from place to place always lending a helping hand and hes got a cute lil pikachu on him. And hes often lost somewhere with a friend just exploring the woods to see if he'll find anything cool. Ya know, as hes always been, but older now. And its only once hes drifted once more do you maybe stumble into an article on the pokeweb about him and are like... that guy??
thereâs a dedicated ashandpikachuspotter account somewhere on some social media. You tag a photo or search for a term and boom, thereâs pics of this guy. this dude. this man. with his pikachu. and itâs thousands of strangers from across the globe coming on line to talk about some stranger that they met briefly and then never saw again. theyâve compiled their stories and their approximate locations and mapped his journey from continent to continent, a long snaking pathway that spans decades and thousands of miles. Heâs apparently one of those Kanto kids that the government let just drop out of school. Its working out very well for him.Â
i just put up the doors of during speak friend and enter + the feanorian star on my door but if any of yall can write âget thee gone from my gate thou jail crow of mandosâ in quenya/tengwar itâll be the fastest decor change i do in my lifeÂ
i think in quenya it would be âĂĄ auta intye et fendenya, corcomandale lo mandosâ literally âget yourself away from my gate, prison-crow of mandosâ (although âget yourself away fromâ may be conjugated wrong)
and i *think* it would look like this written in tengwar:
Hereâs an alternative suggestion - no prepositions, we stick everything to the noun like Finns:
Heca [thou be gone] andonyallo [gate-my-away from], a [vocative particle] mandocorco [loose compound âgaolâ + âcrow"] OR corco mandĂł [âcrow of the gaolâ] mandosseva [âof Mandosâ in a possessive sense, i.e. jailcrow owned by Mandos] OR mandossĂ«o [âof Mandosâ in a genitive sense, i.e. jailcrow that originated in Mandos]
Going with âHeca andonyallo, a mandocorco mandosseva!â, which is my preferred version - doesnât it have a lovely rhythm?, that would be
I really hope G6 My Little Pony has boys that aren't complete uggos, and who look more or less the same as the girl ponies. I want them to be just as pastel, sparkly, and long-haired as the girls. A male voice actor is more than enough to denote that a cartoon horse is male.
