A few thoughts
First off, fuck me right? Secondly, a lot of you are assholes. No, seriously. If you think having the basic human right of having your gender/sexual preference fucking included in anything is comparable to pretty much anything else that is optional content for any reason, full stop.
Thirdly, Iâm not cisgendered. I identify as genderqueer. Fourthly, Iâm also disabled, I have a chronic pain condition, am I am literally in pain every goddamn second of every goddamn day. I am in pain right now, so this post is going to have a lot more expletives in it than it normally would. So can we seriously stop speaking over me please? I donât speak for everyone. I donât speak for every genderqueer person, and I donât speak for every disabled person. I can only speak for me. So please return the favor.
Can we stop telling everyone to just suck it up and have a player-run wedding that may or may not include the perks of an âactualâ in-game marriage thatâs sanctioned by SE? Can we stop telling people that sure, thereâs some stuff everyone wonât get to do in the game because reasons, and that makes it totes okay to exclude people based on their gender or sexuality? Why the frickle frack is marriage equality such a big goddamn issue anymore? And what I mean by that is, why the shit are we not angry at people for excluding it in this day and age for any reason? Oh, we shuffle our feet and look the other way and say âItâs bad business,â or âtheir country isnât okay with itâ, so like somehow that makes it okay? No, that explains their reasoning for not doing it, not why their reasoning is acceptable. Because itâs really not. This is not âacceptableâ. Itâs stupid to add something and then tell people they canât do it because they love the wrong person, or are playing the wrong gender.
Hey, itâs super awesome that real-world politics are intruding in my fantasy world and telling me that in a world that clearly has plenty of gay people in it, that those gay people arenât allowed to get married. Itâs super awesome that SE is progressive enough to include some gay couples (though admittedly, most of these seem to be jokes). SE is clearly fine with including gay people in shit as long as itâs a tongue-in-cheek joke or something, but giving them the same rights in their fantasy world as straight people? haha, gtfo, right?
Itâs not the same as not being able to raid, because at no point has Square Enix said, âHey you! Yeah you! Fuck you! You canât do this, weâre just flat out not going to allow you to raid!â If you canât raid, itâs not because SE hasnât flat-out prohibited it, or stated they are afraid to let you do it, because of the fallout. Itâs another thing altogether to flat out tell people they canât do something because they are the âwrongâ gender or the âwrongâ sexuality, which is essentially what happens when a company says theyâre going to make this novel new feature but you canât do it. Thatâs actually usually considered a basic human right in most places. Why include something if you arenât going to include it so everyone who wants a fair and reasonable shot at doing it has an actual chance of doing it, instead of outright sitting them out? "Just have a player-run wedding," you say. Okay, and you know what, thatâs an option and always has been. Hell, I can go do this right now if I wanted to, and marry the entire server if they felt so inclined to return my affections that way (which I doubt currently). But thatâs also not actually the point. The point is not excluding people on a basic human level for some stupid ass reason. I donât really have the time or inclination to fucking Atma grind, but you know what, I donât sit around saying âMan, they shouldnât have included that Atma grind bullshit because itâs too hard for me to do!â I can even take this a step farther and say itâs really goddamn hard for me to Atma grind because I AM FUCKING DISABLED and it hurts too fucking much to sit there repetitively and grind for hours on end to farm pretty little gems to upgrade my weapon. And you know what? It is. Itâs hard. So you know what? I donât do it very often-I currently only have one Atma, and not much inclination to go get the rest because itâs difficult to do in my case. I donât say, âHey, Square Enix should exclude this content for everyone because I canât do it because I am super way unfun and childish! Iâm disabled and this is hard for me, so no one should do it.â Either add it so everyone can do it, including myself as a disabled person, or donât bother adding it at all.â Fucking no. But you know what? Saying, âHey, Square Enix should exclude content that is excluding non-binary people is shitty and if theyâre going to add it, they should include everyoneâ is not the same thing. I am not able-bodied. I get that I am not able to do everything as a result of this. I wrestle with that shit every fucking day of my goddamn life. I am excluded from a lot of shit because of my disability. I do not expect a videogame to pander to me because of it, however. There are not accessibility ramps in videogames. Either I can play the game or I cannot, and thatâs not something Square Enix is telling me I canât do. Thatâs something I just can or cannot do. Thereâs a difference.
However, you can bet your sweet ass I think they should let anyone and everyone who fucking wants to get married get fucking married if they want to. Does Square Enix have to do this? Hells no, itâs their world, they can run it however they want. However, they totally have the option to make Eorzea a fucking badass place where anyone can marry anyone and no one gives a shit except the uptight fuckshits who think that somehow non-monogamous non-binary people are âruiningâ the sanctity of marriage. For shitâs sake, people have married inanimate objects. One lady married the Eiffel Tower. A dude married a goat. Those people arenât ruining the sanctity of marriage and were allowed to get married, but somehow gay marriage is ruining it? Shut the fuck up.
It is 2014, why on earth are we still actually arguing against marriage equality anywhere let alone in a video game where there are absolutely no laws prohibiting it, nor threats of violence silencing it like in real life? Thereâs no reason under the sun except SE is âscaredâ theyâll upset their homophobic players and they might quit. But hey, itâs totes mcgotes cool to shit all over their non-binary non-heterosexual players, right?

Right, so what you're implying, is if someone has a physical disability or mental one that prevents them from participating in something, that it's all good on the off chance they just "get over" whatever if it is that ails them then that makes it okay?
I get it, it is a feature that doesn't include a category of the playerbase. But it is a small side feature that is completely optional. I've said before that I want it to include everyone. It should include everyone no matter the race or gender. But to say it shouldn't be added at all if it doesn't isn't the answer. It's still something a lot of players want and a lot of players will use and even then it's not even anything that will have a huge impact on the game or how it's played.
In the end it's still a business, and with the Chinese release coming up (Another country that doesn't openly support same-sex marriage) then SE certainly doesn't want to rock the boat. Yes it's going to put off some players, but the sad truth the current opposite-sex system will please more players than it will discourage. Again it's not SE's job to be progressive on critical social issues, they're a game company.

I disagree. I have known many players who showed interest in wanting to do things such as raiding content who simply couldnât for various reasons ranging from physical disabilities to mental ones such as being unable to handle a stressful environment of raiding due to things like anxiety.
Those people are who they are, yet they are unable to participate in said content because of those aspects. So donât act like people who want same-sex marriage in a side feature of a video game are the only people who are denied content because of who they are.
But the content is still there. It's still accessible to them should they ever be able to. It's not exactly fair to say it's the same thing. I understand being unable to do certain content because I myself cannot handle PvP. I get terrible anxiety and shake far too badly for it, so I avoid it altogether, but I am okay with this. Am I a little disappointed I can't ever do it? Sure. But I'm not angry that other people are enjoying it.

Thatâs a really narrow way to look at it. If game developerâs looked at anything they added to their game as a matter of âIf everyone can enjoy it/like it/appreciate it then we can add it but if some people canât/wonât/donât we wonât put it in the game.â Then gameâs wouldnât be fuckinâ made.Â
I like raiding, but some people donât and those people donât touch the raiding aspects of the game but that doesnât mean the people who donât raid can complain about raiding content or whatever.

Itâs a requested addition to the game, and sadly it wonât be all-inclusive to everyone, but even then, itâs simply a game people and thereâs nothing stopping you from making a opposite gender character if you want to experience the marriage system like it is. And even then itâs not gonna be some gigantic feature to the game thatâs gonna change things up, itâs something rather small in the full scope of the game.
I really don't see how it's childish to want a feature opened up so that everyone can access it, especially when it's a fluff feature. It's on a completely different level than raiding, and the comparison doesn't even make sense.
So honestly, no, I can't say I agree with you here, and if you think I'm childish for wanting a fun system accessible to me and people like me, then go right ahead and think that. I shouldn't have to roll a female character, which I despise actively playing, to take part in this feature.
I added this analogy in the forums and I'll add it here. If you bring some cookies for a class of kindergarten kids, and you only give half of them cookies while telling the other half, "Well maybe you'll get cookies someday, but we have to check with your classmates who already have cookies to see what they think about that. They don't really like the way you eat the cookies.", then that isn't really fair at all.
All we're asking for here is for them to treat every customer fairly. This is a feature I would love if it were opened up to me, but I cannot participate in because of my gender. It's bullshit.

To be honest, as a gay male, it doesnât bother me. Whilst I appreciate the actions of SE will likely alienate people because of their decision you have to remember that there are forces at work that could potentially cause havoc for SE. If itâs safe for them to do Hetero marriages only, let them. Whilst I understand that it feels like a kick in the teeth for those who play male characters in a homosexual relationship or the players themselves are homosexual itâs really unfair to get so rowdy with it. I mean think about it honestly, how hard is to RP a marriage ingame? A pair of rings isnât really gonna make a difference in the long run. c:

I am going to raise a stink about it and I am going to fight it, but ultimately if they decide not to add something for an entire group of people while catering to another, they are going to lose my business. Now maybe that doesn't mean much, and realistically, it probably doesn't. But as a queer person myself, I have to stick up for what I believe in, even in a video game.

I definitely agree. Yes it would be a bold move, yes it may cost them some customers, but I honestly think it would do more good than bad if they took this step forward. But because of Japan's view on it, I don't see this happening.
I'm really upset because I won't support a game that doesn't treat me fairly, and I /really/ want to keep playing this game. But they're going to lose me and at least one other person I know if they refuse same sex marriages.
It would be nice if they could just add the outfits and rings and let players perform their own ceremonies. Then we could have our own weddings with people we choose to, and it would be no one else's business.
It's so fucked up that people have to fight for the right to marry in real life, but it's even more fucked up when that leaks over into a virtual fantasy video game. I'm just... so disappointed right now.
