You always considered yourself "normal". Indeed, you had a rather banal childhood, surrounded by your father, Otto Hightower and your sister, Alicent. You had grown up in the Red Keep while your father looked after the king’s affairs and your sister seemed to have befriended the king’s only daughter, Princess Rhaenyra. But you…well, being younger than your sister, you were afraid to venture into the dark halls and gardens alone. But your sister didn’t wait you and spent her days in the company of the princess, but that didn’t mean you had a conflicting relationship, far from it. You were close, and when she realized you were locked in your room during the day, she made the decision to introduce you to the young princess. You have to admit you were happy but also nervous to meet the king’s daughter, she seemed so perfect! But she welcomed you and seemed to appreciate your presence.
┊
Even as you were growing up, you stayed close enough to your father, they raised you alone after your mother died, and you were happy he didn’t give you to a nanny. Like any kid, you thought your dad was great, and the best dad in the world. One day, while you were walking alone in the halls, you saw two men together, they were kissing. This intrigued you and, as a curious child, when dinner arrived, you sat down at the table and asked him the question that remained in your head. "Dad, why are two men kissing?" you asked him in a fluffy voice. Your father seemed shocked by your question and he glanced at you, you just looked down at the table, you knew your father was waiting for more explanation. "I saw two men this afternoon as I was going to join Alicent and Rhaeny." You explained, not looking up at him.
┊
You were glad your sister wasn’t there that night, otherwise you were afraid she’d judge you too. However, your father sighed and finally began to speak. "Y/n, if two men kiss, it is because they are sick." You leaned your head to the side, curious. "Sick?" Otto shook his head. " "Yes, it’s because they have a disease that makes them dislike women but men, it’s a terrible disease. So listen to me y/n, sick people need to be treated, you know?" You knew it very well so you shook your head and your father seemed happy. "So, if you see these men again, tell them they need to get that treatment because it’s not normal." You stood silent for a moment and looked up at him. "What about women? Can a woman fall in love with another woman?" Otto nodded. "Yes, but remember that it is not normal for a woman to love a woman or a man to love a man." This discussion remained engraved in your head, you were 10 years old and you told no one about it.
┊
So, the years have passed and you have grown, soon, you are 17 years old. At this age, Rhaenyra lost her mother, and thanks to your father’s stratagem, Alicent married King Viserys. The years that have passed have brought you closer to the Targaryen family, and it was not surprising that some people thought you were a batard child of King Viserys who had come to live at the court. But you remained loyal to the Hightower family, your family. Despite your sister’s marriage to King Viserys, she and Rhaenyra remained close and had a good relationship. For your part, it was the age of first love, of first encounters, and you met many boys who seemed to be charmed by your beauty, however, none had succeeded in making you fall in love. It surprised you, you thought it was very easy to fall in love with someone and you started wondering if something was wrong with you.
┊
It was a summer morning, during a walk in the garden, that the princess came to you. "Y/n" she greeted you with a nod, a smile on her face. You also smiled at her and were surprised when she grabbed you by the arm and started running, forcing you to follow her. "Where are we going?" you asked her when she had finally slowed down and you were walking beside her. "We’re going to see Syrax," she talked to you like this seemed obvious but you stopped. She had never asked you to see Syrax before, let alone fly with her. "Why?" you asked her when you were walking towards the stables again. She frowned and you could not help noticing the pout she used to make whenever she was intrigued. "Because you’re my friend?" she answered you like this was obvious. It was. " Normally you take my sister with you to see Syrax, not me." you finally added as you approach the stables. "You’re right, but unlike her, you don’t seem afraid to ride a dragon, and Syrax is big enough to carry us both." You didn't know how to answer to that so you only nodded.
┊
As you left town and headed for the dragon stables, you were thinking again. It’s true that you once told your sister that you wanted to fly on a dragon, but you said that as a joke. Did Rhaenyra hear it? Or did your sister tell her? You knew nothing about it to be honest and you realized that you had arrived faster than you thought. Indeed, you were already arrived at the stables and you could hear the dragons inside. You then descended from your horse and followed Rhaenyra who walked quickly in front of you. When you saw Syrax, you could only be surprised, surprised and intrigued. It was the first time you saw a dragon this close and it impressed you. Rhaenyra must have noticed as she let slip a sweet laugh that seemed like music to your ears. "Impressed?" She asked you teasingly and you shook your head. "Yes, who wouldn’t be in front of a dragon that size?" you asked as if it was a rhetorical question and the answer was obvious. You’d be afraid of Vhagar, if you’re impressed by Syrax’s size, she’s rather young for a dragon." She was talking to you while Syrax’s chains were being taken away from her.
┊
She took you by the hand as you approached the dragon. "It’s simple, you get on that, and when you get up you sit on the saddle like you’re riding a horse." She calmly explained, looking at you. "I go up first, then you go up, and once you’re in place, you hold me. I wouldn’t want you to fall." She spoke with a reassuring smile, and, without giving you time to answer, she went up and sat on the saddle, reaching out to you to invite you to join her. You tried to hide your nervousness as you went up, and once up, you put your arms around her waist, holding firmly to her. She could feel your nervousness, for one of her hands released the reins she was holding and pressed your hand to reassure you. As if to tell you that everything would be fine, that you didn’t have to be afraid, that she was there. "I trust you, Rhaenyra," you said in a trembling voice and she gave you a little smile before letting go of your hand.
┊
"Good." She turned before making a move and suddenly you realized that Syrax had started to move and even before you understood what was happening to you, you were in the sky. You clung for your life to Rhaenyra while Syrax always seemed to rise higher up in the sky and you closed your eyes to not see the ground that seemed to be moving away from you. After what seemed like an eternity, you dared to open your eyes and you were surprised not to see the ground under the dragon but white clouds like cotton. What surprised you first was silence. The sky being plunged in silence, indeed, apart from the noises coming from Syrax, you heard nothing. It was soothing and you realized that you were relaxing, the fear of falling gradually moved away from your mind, you let go a sigh and you put your head against the back of Rhaenyra, a smile on your lips. You were fine, you were in the sky with Rhaenyra, and, it relaxed you. However, you didn’t know if it was because you were in silence or because you were with Rhaenyra.
┊
The fly ended too quickly to your liking and soon you were back on dry land. Although you talked to Rhaenyra on your way home, your mind was somewhere else. When night came, you still had questions in your mind, why did you like it when she took you by the hand? Why were you happier in her presence? Why did she never leave your mind? Why did you feel the need to stay by her side? You sighed when you couldn’t sleep. You decided to get up from your bed and went to the balcony where you could see the gardens. You let out another sigh as you watched the gardens. After a while of remaining silent, you went back to bed but couldn’t sleep. You stayed in your bed until you could see the sun rise, and as you watched the morning sun rise in the light pink sky, you took a decision. You were gonna ignore Rhaenyra, so maybe what you were feeling will go away.
┊
So you began to move away from Rhaenyra, you ignored the princess when she called you in the corridors, you ignored her when her beautiful blue eyes stared at you through the crowd, you ignored her when she asked you to come with her to see Syrax. And if you couldn’t ignore it, you were making up an excuse. Like the time you met her in the company of Daemon, her uncle. "Y/n, come with us, I’m sure Syrax would be happy to see you, Daemon even suggested that you meet Caraxes." You had to look at her uncle who gave you a calm smile, as if to prove what his niece said. You hated yourself for what you were going to do, but you looked at the princess. "I’m sorry, my father needs me today." And, without looking at her, you left quickly, away from the two members of the Tagaryen family. After that meeting, you were no longer ignoring Rhaenyra, but you were running away from her likeif she had the plague.
┊
You didn’t know it, but your actions broke the heart of Princess Targaryen, indeed, as the months passed, the young woman would sometimes confide in her uncle. "Daemon?" she questioned him one evening after the dinner she had shared with her father and important lords. The man turned to her when he heard the voice of his niece. "Yes Rhaenyra?" He answered her in an indifferent voice, even though everyone knew that he greatly appreciated his niece, and she even knew it, she was used to him answering in that indifferent voice. "Can we talk?" She asked him, even if it sounded more like an order. Thus, the two Targaryens began to walk towards the royal gardens where only the royal family had access. "What troubles you Rhaenyra?" the rogue prince asked him then that they walked next to each other. "Y/n" she let your name slip away in a sigh.
┊
"Y/n?" He said your name by raising an eyebrow. "Why y/n? I thought you were best friends?" Princess Targaryen nodded. "I thought so too, but she’s ignoring me. "Every time I see her, she doesn’t talk to me or finds an excuse for not having to spend time with me. And… It’s hurtful." Her voice trembled as she spoke, and her uncle seemed to understand what her niece was implicitly telling him." Come, let us sit" He stopped by a bench and invited his niece to sit down, which Rhaenyra did and he sat down beside her. "I’m sure you tried to talk to her that you tried to understand. You asked Alicent why y/n was ignoring you?" the young woman nodded. "Of course, I am not an idiot, my uncle." He looked at her. "What did she say to you?" Rhenyra sighed "She doesn’t know either, but… it annoys me. It annoys me that Y/n no longer wants to spend time in my company." She passed her hand through her hair. "I love her, Uncle Daemon." A calm smile appeared on the prince’s lips." I already knew it, but did you dare to tell her?" Rhaenyra shook her head.
┊
Thus, Rhaenyra revealed the feelings she had for you to her uncle, who took it rather well, in truth, he didn’t care who she was with as long as her partner made her happy. He also knew that Rheanyra’s father would agree with him. But you, it hurt to stay away from her, and, on the contrary, the fact that you moved away from her only made you want to see her, to talk to her, to embrace her. It was weighing you more and more so you felt the need to talk to someone. As if someone had heard your prayers, your sister knocked on your door one autumn afternoon. You invited her into your room and she came to sit on your bed and you hurried to sit down next to her. "What’s going on Y/n? I don’t see you much these days, and when I see you, you’re alone, did something happen between you and Rhaenyra?" His worried voice made you uncomfortable and you passed your hand in your neck, and you felt it was the right time to confess.
┊
"No. But…" you spoke in a calm voice. "But?" she resumed the word in interrogation."I think there’s something wrong with me, Alicent." You spoke in a more nervous voice as you were about to reveal your secret to her, yet your sister didn’t answer and waited for you to keep talking. "I…I think I fell in love with Rhaenyra." As soon as those words left your mouth, your sister’s eyes widened. "Are you in love with Rhaenyra?" she asked you before she took your hands. "But that’s great! I’m sure you’ll be happy with her!" Her reaction surprised you and you answered in a firm voice. "But it’s not normal! It’s not good! I’m sick." She looked at you as if a pair of wings had appeared in your back. "But, anyway…no, you’re not sick, there’s nothing wrong with you. It’s normal to love someone. It's normal to love a woman." You looked away from your sister. "That’s not what father taught me." You heard your sister sigh.
┊
"Our father isn’t always right. And he’s not right about that. You’re free to love whoever you want, woman as man. It is you who fall in love with them, it is you who must decide if you want to spend your life alongside Rhaenyra. Not father." She got closer to you and hugged you from behind. You felt a tear slide on your cheek as your sister hugged you. You were crying, finally letting go of all the emotions you had held back for four months. And it did you good, you felt reassured, your sister didn’t hate you, she supported you. And, despite your tears, you were smiling, finally, after so many months, you accepted your feelings, you accepted that they were normal and that you had the right to feel them. Your sister did not leave you, even when evening came, she did not join the king and the royal family. She stood by you until she made sure you didn’t need her. Before she left you for the night, she kissed you on the forehead, like your mother used to.
┊
That night, that was the second night you went without sleep. But it didn’t bother you, your sister’s words had reassured you, and you had only one goal in mind now, to conquer the heart of Rhaenyra. You didn’t know if she loved you back, but you were willing to do anything. You had too many ideas in your head and you knew that you should not be impulsive, that you should gradually rebuild the relationship you had destroyed. At the first light of dawn, you left your bed, determined to do everything to at least be able to apologize to her. So you left your room and went towards the gardens, you knew that the princess liked to walk there early in the morning, however, to your surprise, Rhaenyra was not in the garden. This did not discourage you and you went back to your room. As you pushed the door of your room, you noticed that a box had been placed on your bed, a black and red box, colors of the house of dragons.
┊
It intrigued you and you slowly approached your bed, as if you feared that the contents of the box would jump on you. But that didn’t happen while you were opening the box to discover a necklace, not a necklace made of gold or silver, no, a necklace made of Valeryen steel. It was beautiful, really. The pendant was simple, a red stone surrounded by a black rim. You didn’t know who it might have come from, but you were hoping it came from her. This gave you a smile and you asked for help from a servant who was passing by so that she could hang it on you. Once this was done, you looked at yourself in the mirror. The necklace went perfectly with your skin color and with your hair. If Rhaenyra had chosen it, she had made a very good choice. You smiled like an idiot in front of the mirror. It seemed that since you accepted what you felt for her, you couldn’t help but feel filled with love for her.
┊
So, you realized that if Rhaenyra had decided to give you this gift, it was because she had an idea behind her head and it made you smile even more, so you decided to do like her. You went discreetly to the garden where you picked red roses for Rhaenyra. You then asked a servant to put the bouquet in her room. The day then passed quietly and you walked in the different corridors, proudly wearing the necklace you had received. This game between you and Rhaenyra continued for some time, each finding gifts in their respective rooms, secretly hoping it came from the other. It was not long before a rumor was heard in the corridors of the Red Keep, saying of you that you were courted by Prince Daemon while the Royal Princess seemed to be courted by an unknown person. It was normal for people to think you were being courted by the prince, since all the gifts you received always carried a draconian symbol. Your father, even if he knew the rumor was unfounded, did nothing to prevent it from spreading.
┊
The more time passed, the more tension grew between you and Rhaenyra, and soon it was only a matter of days before one of you took the first step. One evening, as you were leaving an interview with your father, you were surprised to find the princess waiting for you, she was leaning against the wall in front of your father’s office door. She was beautiful, a goddess. Her light blond hair, almost white, seemed to be silver in the moonlight. She wore a light blue dress, which glittered under the moonlight. She took your breath away, and for a moment, you forgot how to breathe. However, you quickly smiled at her when you noticed she was literally staring at you. You let a laugh slip away and decided to tease her. "I thought you’d give in sooner." She got closer to you, and, suddenly, it seemed quite warm around you." It wouldn’t have been fun," she whispered to you, as she put a strand of your hair back behind your ear.
┊
You felt a shiver down your spine when you felt the hand of the young woman near your ear, Rhaenyra seemed to also notice it, and smiled at you maliciously. You suddenly blushed, indeed, it was the first time you were so close to her since the day she had taken you to fly on Syrax. "I think this game lasted long enough." She whispered in your ear before gently kissing you. Her lips tasted like strawberries, she must have eaten them at dinner. Contrary to what you had thought, her kiss was not aggressive. The dragon seemed calm for now. A noise brought you to your senses. The sound of a door. Suddenly you seemed to return to reality. Rhaenyra was kissing you in front of your father’s office door. Office your father had just left. As Rhaenyra separated from you, you felt your father’s gaze, filled with disgust and shame. However, it did not bother you and you hastened to catch Rhaenyra by the hand, running away from your father. Not out of fear… You knew perfectly well that the next day, at dawn, all the Red Keep will be aware that the king’s daughter and the king’s hand’s daughter were seen kissing. You just wanted to enjoy the few hours of peace you had left.
┊
The next morning, you woke up next to Rhaenyra, the night had not been long, you had a lot of fun together, and you knew that this night would remain engraved in your memory forever. As you let a grunt slip away by feeling the sun on your face, you heard a laugh coming from Rhaenyra, she was amused by the fact that the sun seemed to disturb you. Thus began your day which was marked by several different facts. Especially the fact that your relationship with Rhaenyra was formalized, that Otto Hightower lost his role as the king’s hand after daring to insult the heiress of the throne and that he promised revenge. The Targaryens welcomed you into their family with open arms. (not all, but the majority did.) Thus, your name entered the history of Westeros as well as that of the most powerful, murderous and fascinating royal family.
