"The History of our Revolution will be one continued Lye from one end to the other. The essence of the whole will be that Dr. Franklins electrical Rod, smote the Earth and out sprung General Washington. That Franklin electrified him with his rod—and thence forward these two conducted all the Policy, Negotiations, Legislatures and War"
-John Adams
Okay I was like ‘surely that is fake’ so I looked the quote up and not only is it legit, the next bit of the letter is “if this Letter should be preserved, and read an hundred Years hence the Reader will Say “the Envy of this J. A. could not bear to think of the Truth”! [“]He ventured to Scribble to Rush, as envious as himself, Blasphemy that he dared not Speak, when he lived. But Barkers at the sun and Moon are always Silly Curs.” But this my Friend, to be serious, is the Fate of all Ages and Nations. And there is no Resource in human nature for a Cure.”
In early July, a dispute began between two writers; Rachel Hope Cleves, author of Charity and Sylvia; A Same-Sex Marriage in Early America,
An absolutely wild ride with a final twist that objectively doesn’t matter but will make you do a serious double take.
You should read this, its masterful, but a summary:
Rachel Hope Cleves, who is an academic historian, wrote a nonfiction book about two women- charity and sylvia- who lived as a married couple in early America.
She then claimed a graphic novel about those same women- also titled Charity and Sylvia- was based extensively on her own work without credit.
This was complete and utter horse shit.
And the above article beautifully outlines all the evidence to prove that claim.
The article isn't paywalled and is a masterclass in how to understand and get to the bottom of a baseless internet dogpile.
I'm at a convention for the game of Go with a friend who is almost 84 years old, and he is constantly being accosted by elementary schoolers who want to play him because every year there is a prize for whoever plays a game with the biggest age difference between players.
So every time I go to look for him, I see this:
People in the tags pointing out that this is a great way to get communities to interact: you are extremely correct. There were a lot of kids at this year's go congress (many of them extremely strong players) and it's very funny to watch them roving in packs looking for old people to challenge. At one point when my friends and I were sitting in one of the side rooms, a trio of elementary schoolers marched in and shouted "IS ANYONE HERE OVER FIFTY?"
Presumably so that they could compete for the Elder Slayer award:
Dan is dead; all hail Don.
My favorite part of this monstrosity is the auto-generated question at the bottom. What size items fit inside? Babe what size items do you have?
Also "versatile for gym". Imagine rocking up to your gym and dropping this next to your locker. Unhinged.
OP you left out the best one

Everyone: Californians are such whimps about the weather. "Oh no there's half an inch of rain, whatever shall i do?"
Also everyone: When there's a hurricane you should never drive through water more than six inches deep, water that's a high as your ankle is enough to sweep you away.
Every major street in southern California when there's half an inch of rain: I used to be a dry riverbed in a desert, but today I am a river again :)
This isn't even bad, it's just an entire lane turned into a Slip & Slide for about half a mile.
"Don't you people have storm drains?"
Yes.
They're why the slip & slide isn't over the curb here.
Reviving this meme from when Australians and the British were complaining about our weather and not being taken seriously. I absolutely feel you, best of luck with your rough weather
over and over again it comes down to the fact that fanfiction is most people's only exposure to amateur writing
'so there's this website where literally anyone can post fiction they've written whenever they want and - get this! - a lot of it is bad' yeah no shit. what would you expect?
Relatedly:
A lot of fanfiction is specifically a type of amateur fiction that's shooting for maximum emotional gratification. 'i want these two characters to fuck nasty' 'i want this character to have a big ugly cry about their feelings' 'i want this character to get their legs broken' that sort of thing.
This approach is not inherent to fanfiction and it's not unique to fanfiction. There's whole communities of people out there writing original fiction that's aiming for exactly the same level of gratification. Most people are simply never exposed to it.
#mmm big ugly cries about feelings mmmm while their legs are broken after being fucked nasty mmm
got fucked nasty so hard their legs both broke and now they're ugly crying
I cannot believe having a Nature episode on in the background while I worked today would solve the mystery of which of my neighbors stuffed 6 inches of baguette firmly under my wiper blades two years ago.
