Rebuking when encouraged to retreat!
But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.” One day I went to the house of Shemiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, “Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you – by night, they are coming to kill you.” But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go! I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me...He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me. – Nehemiah 6:9b-13
What if prayer were met by a spiritual attack to do something that seems very spiritual that would lead us to sin against our God? This is the quandary in which Nehemiah discovered himself. Praying for strength in the face of intimidation a “prophet” encourages Nehemiah to run into the temple to save his life. Yet, Nehemiah accompanied by the discernment and wisdom extended by God choose not to retreat but to rebuke.
What if when tempted to retreat to the thing that appears spiritual we become all the more committed to that which is the most spiritual, our God!

Passionate Inheritance
The moment Jesus lived out the complete passion of our Righteous Father by choosing to die a substitutionary death in our place we were granted access to a great inheritance to which his life grants access. Yet the inheritance is available because of death, therefore did his resurrection nullify our access to this inheritance or is it that our reciprocal death motivated by our passion for his passion now re-grants us access to this treasure? Perhaps his resurrection did not change the conditions of our inheritance but simply attests to the fact that not only did he fulfill the natural laws of our universe but his life, death and life again defies them. Jesus’ live attests to the fact that God says squarely, I made all that you see, therefore I can enter into it as I please, on my terms. Jesus is the living embodiment of the natural expectations of human body, yet one that is totally unbound by the conditions of humanity. Subject to grief, hunger, temptation, anger and frustration but not one bit bound by them. Jesus’ life declares there is a God who plays by the system he designed, and yet throws it totally on its heads. Playfully, the life of Jesus suggests God is sovereign, surely in control and the designer of our world.
from jealousy to celebration
My new prayer: Father THANK YOU FOR HONORING ME BY WAKING ME UP this morning to invite me to spend time with you and for you choosing to spend time with me! Thank you for working in the life of my friend to show her your glory. I pray that as you continue to elevate her she would elevate you and see and know you in a deeper way that many more would come to know you and call on you in spirit and in truth! Thank you Jesus for blessing her! Your word is true - “blessings crown the head of the righteous” and “the name of the righteous is used in blessings” (Proverbs 10:6 and 7). Hallelujah! Continue to keep your hand upon her, expand her territory, expand the territory in her heart for your glory, and keep her from pain for your glory! In Jesus’ mighty name!
I prayed this morning: Father I am jealous of the success of someone else, a peer. Take this away.
He reminded me: My purpose is to represent God before man in wisdom, hope and love; to present man before God in love and humility knowing that WHATEVER God has given ME is already TOO much and totally undeserved - sitting here today is my award ceremony - what greater honor do I need than for the KING to have seen fit to wake me morning by morning? New mercies I see. (Insert standing ovation here!) And if I really were serious about loving God I would be too stuck on celebrating God’s glory in the work of others to get caught up on them! When I see someone being honored (especially a sister or brother in the Lord!), why not see the work of God and mercy of God on grand display? For we know God gave them the ability to be successful and put it on someone else’s heart to honor them. Apart from God we only desire to honor ourselves, and even that we do miserably! Thank you Jesus for a renewed perspective!
Wisdom of Proverbs 28
v. 1 The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as lions.
The wicked are so easily deceived, fear is their first response/comes second nature to them. The righteous trust in God therefore are bold as he is - “Do not weep. See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David has triumphed!” (Rev. 5:5) Therefore we are bold and fully confident as he is!
v. 2 When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a ruler with discernment and knowledge maintains order.
Rebelliousness is a sign of rampant lawlessness. Where there are rebels there are many forces vying to rule. But a servant of God, one chosen by God to shepherd who has been given discernment and knowledge maintain order despite these forces thanks to the wisdom of God.
v. 3 A ruler who oppresses the poor is like a driving rain that leaves no crop.
A person in authority who dishonors the poor destroys the future harvest. Only the master gardener knows what lies in and can resurrect that harvest.
v. 4 Those who forsake instruction praise the wicked, but those who heed it resist them.
Lack of knowledge leads to encouraging the wicked, those who heed knowledge resist the wicked.
v. 5 Evildoers do not understand what is right, but those who seek the Lord understand it fully.
Evil activity blocks the path to understanding. Seeking the Lord are granted complete, unbroken understanding. You want wisdom, understanding - seek God, the ultimate unveiler.
v. 6 Better the poor whose walk is blameless than the rich whose ways are perverse.
My God he is a defender of the poor who trust in him rather than those who are rich in the world economy yet far from our King and ruler.
v. 7 A discerning son heeds instruction, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.
One whose hope and identity is wrapped up in his relationship to his father listens to his father and obeys including in his choice of companions. Fathers are saddened to see their children disobediently indulge the company of people who are greedy for the riches of this world.
v. 8 Whoever increases wealth by taking interest or profit from the poor amasses it for another, who will be kind to the poor.
Our Father and God has a great plan. The one who appears to steal from the poor is cooperating with God to be stolen from that what he has will be returned to the poor.
Be kind to the poor and honor God.
v. 9 If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction, even their prayers are detestable.
Don’t pray to me if you refuse to listen to me.
v. 10 Whoever leads the upright along an evil path will fall into their own trap, but the blameless will receive a good inheritance
Lead others astray and you too will be led to the destruction of your own making, but those who desire to show others the way of righteousness will receive the true riches of God.
v. 11 The rich are wise in their own eyes; one who is poor and discerning sees how deluded they are.
Gaining riches of the world blinds people to true wisdom - all they see is the wisdom they have created. Poor in the world system of prestige, pride and power allows people to see clearly even the delusion of peers.
v. 12 When the righteous triumph there is great elation; but when the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding.
People are happy about Godly servants chosen to lead who win. But people fear and operate in stealth when those who disdain God and his ways are given authority.
v. 13 Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
Confess your sin and find the hand of God, full of mercy, beckoning you home to him where he may lift the weight of it.
v. 14 Blessed is the one who always trembles before God, but whoever hardens their heart falls into trouble.
Never be too spiritual you forget that God deserves our complete reverence even to the point of forever and always trembling before him. Refusing to tremble even if just for a moment will result in trouble even if just for a moment.
v. 15 Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a helpless people
People in positions of authority who despise God and his ways are bent on destroying those they are given charge to protect.
v. 16 A tyrannical ruler practices extortion, but one who hates ill-gotten gain will enjoy a long reign.
Unrestrained power results in abuses of power, but one who hates boundlessness will be enjoy (not simply experience) longevity in leading.
v. 17 Anyone tormented by the guilt of murder will seek refuge in the grave; let no one hold them back.
Murder someone and see how guilt ensnares and murders you. Ask Judas. Do not stand in their way.
v. 18 One whose walk is blameless is kept safe, but the one whose ways are perverse will fall into the pit.
God grants protection to those who seek him and walk uprightly. Do not seek him or walk uprightly and see how far you will surely fall.
v. 19 Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies will have their fill of poverty.
Work the sphere of spiritual, physical, financial and relational influence you have (not wish you had) and watch the harvest God provides. Chase after illusions and what is or could be and see how much will be taken from you.
v. 20 A faithful person will be richly blessed but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished
Be a person of your word and watch how God will reward you with himself. But chasing money is a crime that will meet its due punishment.
v. 21 To show partiality is not good, yet a person will do wrong for a piece of bread.
Favoring one person over the other is not Godly or God-like. But our momentary and insignificant desires of our flesh can lead a person to act in an unGodly manner by showing partiality.
v. 22 The stingy are eager to get rich and are unaware that poverty awaits them.
Be not generous with your relational, financial, time, spiritual and physical resources and watch how they are taken from you.
v. 23 Whoever rebukes a person will in the end gain favor rather than one who has a flattering tongue.
Tell the truth about wrongdoing and watch how God honors you. Try and flatter someone from selfish ambition and watch how honor leaves you.
v. 24 Whoever robs their father or mother and says, “It’s not wrong,” is partner to one who destroys.
Take stealthily from the people who raised you and watch how destruction marries you.
v. 25 The greedy stir up conflict but those who trust in the Lord will prosper.
Greed = hungry for drama
Trust in God = prosperity
v.26 Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.
Trust in your knowledge and your resources (physical, relational, spiritual) and see how foolish your life looks, but walk with God in his infinite wisdom and he will keep you safe - wisdom doesn't have the power to protect you, only God does!
v.27 Those who give to the poor lack nothing.
Want to never have need? GIve to those who have less spiritually, physically, financially, intellectually and relationally.
v.28 When the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding; but when the wicked perish the righteous thrive.
People, their gifts, desires, dreams and ambitions are veiled under unGodly leadership. When unGodly leaders are removed the people who seek and honor God flourish willingly unveiling their gifts, talents and abilities.
separated by obedience
Sometimes obedience leads to separation. Ask Jesus. He was greatly grieved at the thought of loosing fellowship with his beloved, but hadn't obedience led him to this point? What happens when we are willing to obey to the point of death even seeming death of our relationship with God? There is an obedience that leads to near death. Herein we find the resurrecting-power that only Christ has for us. Herein we discover that in three days not only has what we longed for not died but in fact it has been renewed, restored and transformed. Obey.
Risk More

risk more
If I truly believe that there is NO limit to the “risk” I would take trusting the Lord to continue to protect and guide me, what height or depth couldn't I reach? If I believe we’ve already won then there is no need to shrink back. For we are not of those who shrink back but we are among those who advance forward with victory and lay hold of the promises of our God! Since I know we’ve won and won forever, I can face opposition today with my face as iron knowing I have already won. Day to day the enemy wants you to believe you’ve lost but in living out in faith, hope, and love the truth of the word of God we proclaim that we know he’s won and it is his victory that emboldens me. Like to Peter he has said, “Come” and as surely as he’s won, here I go. Into today. Expecting to win forever (1 Thessalonians 4:13) and walk on water!!!
As a warrior sent on a mission I don’t look for high ground where there is no battle. It is the very fact that I am equipped and trained for this great day that I go out expecting to be hit with temptation to submit to all other names except the one that truly is lord and the ONLY name, Zechariah 14:9. As a warrior I expect to be challenged, I expect the enemy to try and distract me from the one purpose that I have been called – not to defeat the enemy which still makes him my focus, but to worship, shine light on and honor the ONLY true name – that awesome and amazing name of Jesus. It is the equipping of faith – resolute commitment to the word, person and revelation of God in Christ; love – the willingness to obey what he says; and hope - the commitment to think on and expect, not greater battling, though this may certainly come, but to set my mind constantly and forever on the forever promise of reigning in glory with the name that is the ONLY name!
I don’t look for the teaching that promises “peace and safety” (1 Thessalonians 5:3). No I expect my God to continue to use me on the battle field that I may have the chance to live out what I believe in him. And so we will be with the Lord forever (1 Thessalonians 4:17)!

the democracy of his promises
“all” and “every” are the most democratic words I know. they suggest that I’m included. no hurt feelings because I was left off the invite or guest lists. not with “all” or “every.” with them, I’m there, right there! my invitation was in mind from the beginning. In the middle of “all” and “every” you’ll find me, and I’ll find you too. in looking to God’s word we don’t have to look far to find us both:
…all have turned away all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. -Psalm 14:3
…so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work…-2 Corinthians 9:8
…every knee should bow…and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father….-Philippians 2:10;11
Taste and See
Underexposed areas of my life remained hidden from the naked eye, like film in a dark room. I hid my world there. Until he brought me into the light, led me by the hand and said, “See.”
Wafers, chips, popcorn, wafers, fries, bread. Whatever was left. An undelectable assortment of randomness. I ate. Without enjoyment I ate to quiet the sadness, the confusion and fear. It worked. For sometime. Then, I looked around at the trail of crumbs and saw no hope. No chance of change. And I ate somemore. This was the world I hid from the world. Exposed you’d see my smiling face. My social nature. The degree to which I was well-liked and sought after, but really I didn’t even like myself. How could the world like me? Because they didn’t know me.
“See you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you. Taste and see that I am good.”
And I have. And you are.

his heart
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21
“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.” - Matthew 13:44 NLT
“...for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light..” - 1 Peter 2:8b-9
Have you ever considered the idea that God entrusts us with his heart and as a result we are his treasure? The Father gave us Jesus, his heart. Our acceptance of this treasure grants our admission to the Kingdom of God. Therefore we are entrusted with protecting God’s heart who desires to occupy greater residency in our hearts (Ephesians 3:17) . If you are entrusted with caring for God’s heart what would you give up to better hold onto and manage the heart of God? What would you sacrifice for his heart? What wouldn’t you let go? Herein lies the need for us to pray the Jabez way but this time with regard to our hearts:
The Prayer of Jabez for the heart:
Oh, that You would bless me and enlarge my heart for you that you would occupy increasingly more and more of my heart, and that Your hand might be with me, and You would keep me from evil so that I would not grieve your heart!
love you forever, really?
For a period of a few months God has been teaching me about his work in my heart. As a surgeon taking on the most difficult of procedures, the process has been meticulous, seemingly marked by delay, painful and yet full of rest - all of which are needed for healing to take place. Just last night at church while singing the lyric “Love you forever” I was struck with the question of whether this statement was true for me. We serenaded Jesus with these fine lyrics but was my heart truly bent on loving him FOREVER? I just turned 30 and forever feels like a really long time. Certainly at least during the interlude of that fine song and maybe through the chorus as well I would love Jesus. But as often happens my mind wanders back to a problem I have been experiencing, a bracelet I’m wearing, wishing I hadn't chosen to fast so that I could enjoy that donut I intend to have guilt free, and let’s not forget wondering whether it is ungodly during praise and worship to search the crowd for that one I think is particularly special (though I haven’t yet told him)....There you have it. Do I love Jesus forever while my mind and heart are forever preoccupied with all that is not him? In my efforts to set my heart and mind on things above where Christ is seated am I distracted from beholding his glory by staring instead at all the things subdued at Christ’s feet? After that brief departure I returned to God with the question, “Will I really love you forever?” His answer, startled, awed and has inspired me .”If you give me your heart and leave it with me you will.”
I am still reeling from that one. And then wouldn't you know it, our elder who led us in study and praise that evening had us to read Psalm 28:7 which encourages, “The Lord is my strength and shield I trust him with all my heart.” Up until that moment I read that passage and ones like it with a sense that I would need to work myself into living out that verse - that I would need to trust God with all of the mental and emotional resources I could muster up. As if I had to expend a huge degree of energy to fulfill this commitment to God that David penned. But then God, in absolute grace, pointed me up another path, the best pathway for my life.
He is showing me that to “trust him with ALL MY HEART” means just that - to give my heart to him fully. Let’s imagine he is the Dr. Ben Carson of heart surgery - if I had a heart condition that required surgery, there is no question I would trust him to resolve it. This is the degree of confidence God desires we have of him. If we give him our hearts in full and leave them with him we invite him to take up fully residency in our hearts (Ephesians 3:17) where he desires to be most comfortable. He desires no less. He invites us to “give him our heart” as our eyes delight in the beauty of his work (Proverbs 23:26). In giving up needing to know all the details of the process we are invited to rest while he takes command of our dreams, regrets, ambitions, desires, fears, concerns, emotions, intellect and potential. I do not know a better way to guard our hearts than to allow him to do that for us. Hallelujah!
I pray that all who read this would give Jesus their hearts in full - all of it - and leave them with him. I pray that this unapologetic act of devotion, like the perfume poured in love from an alabaster jar would produce such a sweet fragrance that it would draw and spur on others to do the same. In Jesus’ mighty name!
On knocking (Matthew 7:7-11)
We seek him but discover it has been him seeking us all this time! As we ask, seek and knock it is as if we’ve gone looking for whomever was looking for us. It is not I who first asked, sought, or knocked. Jesus did these and I in turn follow the trail of his knocking and discover it was me he was looking for. As if I’ve just knocked at the correct door to someone who had been knocking at the door of my heart for generations.
Once I do open the door at the entrance point of my heart (lethargically and likely after too long a time of him knocking), he ducks away from perceivable view to invite me to play, to chase after him. Once I go looking, knocking at the doors nearest by in hopes of finding the one who looked for me, he waits to just the right time to flood the correct door frame with overwhelming joy and peace! If only I keep knocking and not attempt to take up full habitation in the first door that opens to me. That door was meant to provide a mere resting place or a glimpse of glory - not the full picture. Keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking and you will find the one you’re looking for - the one whose knock you heard and now have gone searching.
Two Lies and a Truth (Joshua 9)
People will recognize the power of God at work within us and desire relationship with us to: 1)contain our God; 2)manipulate our God; 3) appropriate the favor of God for their personal satisfaction or 4) to genuinely worship our God. Perhaps we started out at number 3 and move to number 4. This too is possible.
I believe I first became a Christian because I wanted to appropriate the favor of God for my personal satisfaction. God is helping me to see he wanted to appropriate my heart for his delight! And that is fine with me! Maturity in Christ begins when we recognize God wants more of the territory in our hearts. We seek him because we want the stuff he provides, and he allows us to seek him in that fashion. But in time he reveals that all the stuff does not compare to the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior. I consider all else garbage. This one thing do I do - forget what was yesterday brought and press on for that which Christ Jesus pressed on to attain my heart.
The Parable of Faith: Luke 19:11-27, Hebrews 11
Jesus, the great King who went to a distant land to be crowned will soon return. When he does he will inspect the portion of faith with which we have been entrusted. In so doing he will ask, "What good have you done with what I've left you?" Like the faithful servant who went off, took risks, and stewarded the single portion he was given, our faith will grow if we let it go. Like the other second servant who also saw value in letting go what he was given, our faith will grow when we let it go. That third servant though, we discover did not really know his master. In fact he held tightly to a false view of his master which may be worse than not knowing him at all. In fear, he hid what he was given, took no risks and in so doing, forfeited it all - his faith. The result: That which he had was taken away.
Key Teaching Point: Faith is meant to be let go to grow. When deciding between options ask God to show you clearly which path requires you to release more faith/invest more of that which you've been given for God's glory. In so doing we are asking the ultimate investment manager to direct out paths and investment of faith. Praise God for faith that can move mountains when released from our hands.
