DRAGONHEART SENTENCE STARTERS
( using the novel by Charles Edward Pogue )
this is the tale of a knight who slew a dragon and vanquished evil.
purpose, not passion. fight with your head, not your heart.
mind if I sit? your exertion exhausts me.
nobody ever found victory in the dirt.
kneel in battle and you will never kneel at your coronation.
only expose your back to a corpse.
do I waste my breath on you?
use your head or lose your head.

it has the stench of dragon.
not the dragon’s stench. merely man’s pollution of him.
your song is sad tonight.
no stars in the sky tonight.
no bright souls glitter on this dark night.
man and dragon may be brethren as of old.
curse not what you know not.
half my heart to make you whole.
live and remember your oath.
call when you’ve need of me, ask what you will of me.
death is a release, not a punishment.
burn that insolence out of his eyes.
all bonds are broke with your betrayal.
thus far, this has been a rather uneventful, if not altogether fruitless and boring, quest.
you have the poet’s gift for exaggeration.
times are topsy-turvy and the world is not as it once was.
might we travel together?
let them pay for the privilege.
I am a disobedient child.
all knights need a quest.
you cannot bewitch the devil.
I’ve come to immortalize you.
go rescue a damsel or win a joust!
a dragon’s word is useless.
if you insist, we can pursue this fracas until its final stupidity.
why did you put your faith in me?
do you delight in reminding me?
I long for death… but fear it.
there are worse fates than death.
he only had half a heart.
a spoiled, ungrateful child was given a great gift and destroyed it.
I would give you everything.
you say that as though you reached up and plucked it from the sky.
you’re right. it’s a silly idea.
you whisper it as though it were a prayer.
truth is rarely inspiring.
they’re trying to placate you with a sacrifice.
it would impress the yokels.
why! you’re quite pretty!
you’re not like a dragon at all.
pick on someone your own size!
you spoke the words! spoke them from your heart!
I vomited them up because I couldn’t stomach them! because I knew it was what you wanted to hear!
the dazzle of your dreams blinds you to dark truth.
man abandoned dragon wisdom long ago.
try to turn the wretched world the other way.
I long to recite it for you.
I’ll remember this when it’s your turn to die.
I come here to be alone sometimes.
omens and shadows won’t win battles.
my sacrifice became my sin.
shut up, you screeching popinjay!
lost honor can be recovered. not so much lost youth.
turn the other cheek, sinner!
come from the shadows. stand where I can see you.
are the stars shining tonight?
strike deep… clear to the heart.
