@aforestgod
just some guys
The first forest devoured them all one by one, spitting their bones to the ground only for their roots to swallow them back in.
The Beast in the Woods demands tribute and you are the newly chosen sacrifice. Enter the first forest and face the monster awaiting within.
The Beast in the Woods is a short interactive fiction game (~5.5k words). It's my first game ever and I'm new to Twine, so there might be bugs.
I hope you enjoy the experience.

THE BONESINGER
can you feel it? the smell of things growing and dark earth, of the deep and the hidden? itâs overwhelming, pungent; it clings to you like a second skin now that you know it is here
briar.
that's the name written in blood by the murder victim.
your name.
the body of the famous wilderling bard dandelion lies broken and ravaged in the depths of the spire's gardens, and now everyone think you are to blame for it. but you aren't (are you?). someone - dandelion themselves? - wants you hanged for it, and now you must find out why.
but the truth isn't so easy to grasp. the wilder magic in your veins hungers, the woods call and from under the buried bones of the spire something answers.
something that knows your name and has been waiting for you for a long time.
GAMEPLAY
why did the wilderlings break free from the trees seven years ago? no one can say, least of all the wilderlings themselves - they have no memory of their lives or names before their awakening, no knowledge of the cursed magic lurking beneath their skin, no explanation for their strange appearance. but there must be a reason why. someone, somewhere, knows something. (from the writings of sage stoneclaw).
the bonesinger is a visual novel with point & click elements. you play as briar (nonbinary, he/him), a wilderling herbalist who lives with other wilderlings in the spire, a monstrous building so ancient no one remembers who built it. investigate a murder, clear your name (or don't) and interact with an interesting cast of characters, each with their own secrets and goals.
important: the game won't have romance, but you will be able to build friendships with the main cast. there are no plans for explicit content, but some light body horror, gore and blood will be present, so the blog and game are 18+. a demo is being developed for spooktober vn jam.
they brought other bones up, do you see? that right there is a half-buried ribcage, and those are human fingers poking through the soil.

I am very excited to announce that Wayfarer's public release will launch on Thursday September 9 at 12:00pm PST!
What the Public Release Includes:
The Prologue & Chapter I
Over 20 codex entries for you to discover
Over 500k words of cumulative game content (75k for an average playthrough, or roughly 2 and a half hours of gameplay)
All-new UI designs and visual assets, including unique screens for shopping, bartering, and your inventory
Toggleable dark and light modes
Toggleable fullscreen mode for PC
Full mobile compatibility, for both portrait and landscape modes
What a Public Launch Means
Previously, the game's public build was only accessible via a password-embedded URL on my development blog. This is how early players and followers of my blog were able to play the game. Now that the game is launching officially, it will no longer be in restricted access, which means:
You will be able to find it through itch.io's search function
If you previously put the game in a public itch.io collection, it will now show up
You can leave comments!
You can view all of the dev logs (going back to October 2020)
Release Schedule
Wayfarer's release schedule is episodic. Once launched, the public build will update on a chapter-by-chapter basis. If you're interested in early access content, the alpha build will continue have in-development content that goes beyond what is playable in the public version.
The alpha build is available to play on my Patreon! Patrons get some additional goodies and benefits, and access to a backlog of worldbuilding and bonus content posts. This month, I'll be doing a Creator Q&A that will be exclusive to Patreon.
See you on September 9th! đ„łâš
what some people seem to not get about interactive fiction is that this is still a story. you, the reader, and your mc are a part of that world and exist within those confines as long as you are reading it.
you don't get to pick and choose every facet of the characters or their journey within someone else's story just because you can make some choices along the way. if you don't like something about it, stop reading. don't fucking go in authors' inboxes because you feel you are owed something. you're not. this is their story.
devblogs on tumblr are not something you are entitled to, but a way for authors to share their story and extras with you. the author's time is not something you're entitled to. they're not here for you to air your nasty, often racist, transphobic, acephobic opinions. gain some perspective or get the fuck out.
this is going around twitter rn but im also super curious: please tell me your top four comfort movies that youâre always down to watch bc my friend thinks mine are ridiculous and now weâve realised everyoneâs version of âcomfortâ is hilariously different
being in your 20s is just like thinking ''im 19'' and then realizing you are not actually 19 anymore...
every time rhaegar targaryen was described in a positive way in canon:
Can you wake the dead, girl? Your brother Rhaegar was the last dragon, and he died on the Trident (Jorah Mormont)
For the first time in years, he found himself remembering Rhaegar Targaryen. He wondered if Rhaegar had frequented brothels; somehow he thought not. (Ned Stark)
âSwords win battles,â Ser Jorah said bluntly. âAnd Prince Rhaegar knew how to use one.â (Jorah Mormont)
Able. That above all. Determined, deliberate, dutiful, single-minded. (Barristan Selmy)
Your brother Rhaegar is still remembered, with great love. (Barristan Selmy)
Many a night she had watched Prince Rhaegar in the hall, playing his silver-stringed harp with those long, elegant fingers of his. Had any man ever been so beautiful? (Cersei Lannister)
Prince Rhaegar led free men into battle, not slaves. Whitebeard said he dubbed his squires himself, and made many other knights as well. (Barristan Selmy)
There was no higher honor than to receive your knighthood from the Prince of Dragonstone. (Jorah Mormont)
âŠwe bow only to our own lords, and the king. The true king, not Robert and his ilk.â He spat. âThere was Crabbs and Brunes and Boggses with Prince Rhaegar on the Trident, and in the Kingsguard too. A Hardy, a Cave, a Pyne, and three Crabbs, Clement and Rupert and Clarence the Short. Six foot tall, he was, but short compared to the real Ser Clarence. Weâre all good dragon men, up Crackclaw way. (Dick Crabb)
âŠhe cheers of the smallfolk had echoed off Casterly Rock like rolling thunder. They cheered Father twice as loudly as they cheered the king, the queen recalled, but only half as loudly as they cheered Prince Rhaegar. (Cersei Lannister) Â
I had the Freys to supper. One sat just where youâre sitting now. Rhaegar, he named himself. I almost laughed right in his face. (Godric Borrell)
âEveryone says that Prince Rhaegar was beautiful. Was Viserys beautiful as well?â (Arianne Martell)
Others might claim that the realm was lost when Prince Rhaegar fell to Robertâs warhammer on the Trident (Jon Connington)
Then Prince Rhaegar would have ascended the Iron Throne, mayhaps to heal the realm. (Jon Connington)
He had known Jon Connington, slightlyâa proud youth, the most headstrong of the gaggle of young lordlings who had gathered around Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, competing for his royal favor. (Jon Connington)
On the morning after the battle, the crows had feasted on victors and vanquished alike, as once they had feasted on Rhaegar Targaryen after the Trident. How much can a crown be worth, when a crow can dine upon a king? (Jaime Lannister)
Here are a few more. When Dany orders the Dothraki to stop raping the Lhazareen and tries to protect them, she is compared to Rhaegar by Jorah:
âAs you command.â The knight gave her a curious look. âYou are your brotherâs sister, in truth.â
âViserys?â She did not understand.
âNo,â he answered. âRhaegar.â He galloped off. - Daenerys VII AGOT
When Dany forbids Skahaz to torture people, Barristan tells her that Rhaegar would have been proud:
Afterward, Ser Barristan told her that her brother Rhaegar would have been proud of her. - Daenerys V ADWD
These are not quotes directly about Rhaegar, but they still tell us a lot about who Rhaegar was. When Dany tries to protect the weak and powerless,or when Dany acts honorably (like ordering the tortures to stop), she is compared to Rhaegar or people tell her that Rhaegar would have been proud. That tells us that Rhaegar was a compassionate person who, just like Dany, tried to protect the weak and powerless, and that tried to act honorably.
Dany also directly asks Jorah about whether Rhaegar was someone who protected the weak, and Jorah confirms it:
âTell me, thenâwhen he touched a man on the shoulder with his sword, what did he say? âGo forth and kill the weakâ? Or âGo forth and defend themâ? At the Trident, those brave men Viserys spoke of who died beneath our dragon bannersâdid they give their lives because they believed in Rhaegarâs cause, or because they had been bought and paid for?â Dany turned to Mormont, crossed her arms, and waited for an answer.
âMy queen,â the big man said slowly, âall you say is true. But Rhaegar lost on the Trident. He lost the battle, he lost the war, he lost the kingdom, and he lost his life. His blood swirled downriver with the rubies from his breastplate, and Robert the Usurper rode over his corpse to steal the Iron Throne. Rhaegar fought valiantly, Rhaegar fought nobly, Rhaegar fought honorably. And Rhaegar died.â - Daenerys II ASOS
When Dany shows herself to be a good military commander (by outlining the plan to defeat Yunkai), she is compared to Rhaegar, which tells us that he was a good military commander:
âJust so,â she agreed. âI think we should attack from three sides. Grey Worm, your Unsullied shall strike at them from right and left, while my kos lead my horse in wedge for a thrust through their center. Slave soldiers will never stand before mounted Dothraki.â She smiled. âTo be sure, I am only a young girl and know little of war. What do you think, my lords?â
âI think you are Rhaegar Targaryenâs sister,â Ser Jorah said with a rueful half smile. - Daenerys IV ASOS
And Barristan repeatedly thinks and talks about what a good person and great king Rhaegar would have been:
âNot now,â she agreed. âOne day. One day you must tell me all. The good and the bad. There is some good to be said of my father, surely?â
âThere is, Your Grace. Of him, and those who came before him. Your grandfather Jaehaerys and his brother, their father Aegon, your mother ⊠and Rhaegar. Him most of all.â - Daenerys VI ASOS
~
It was his failures that haunted him at night, though. Jaehaerys, Aerys, Robert. Three dead kings. Rhaegar, who would have been a finer king than any of them. - The Queensguard ADWD
no thoughts, only cat grandpa
All the known characters Rhaegar Targaryen beat during the tourneys.
Prince Rhaegarâs prowess was unquestioned, but he seldom entered the lists. He never loved the song of swords the way that Robert did, or Jaime Lannister. It was something he had to do, a task the world had set him. He did it well, for he did everything well. That was his nature. But he took no joy in it. Men said that he loved his harp much better than his lance.
