A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking sounds awesome.
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance.
But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries...
“Her familiar is a sourdough starter” is killing me, and I’m encouraged by the fact that we have 14 year old protagonist? Yes! Give us fun, whimsical YA novels again that aren’t all obsessed with sex and the Harsh Realities of the World
even the description on his poem real estate is so so good
watching a Hallmark-type x-mas movie, and the prince of some vaguely European nation was looking for a caterer and asked about "that guy with the hair, and the diners, and the driving" and I've decided that all I want for x-mas is a romcom where the prince hires and then falls in love with the Guy Fieri expy as he does his Guy Fieri best to un-stuffy the prince's royal banquet.
What I like even better is the idea that the prince did not request Hallmark Guy Fieri, but his executive assistant misinterpreted his request and imported Hallmark Guy Fieri, and the Prince was about to be like CAST HIM INTO THE OUTER DARKNESS but then he tried his cooking and was like “Well he’s obnoxious but I guess he can stay, we’ve never had food that good at a royal banquet.”
THEN you get to have the arc where the Prince slowly figures out that Hallmark Guy Fieri is a specific strain of himbo, where he’s loud and weird and unmannered but also respects everyone and is kind and shares food and promotes on ability rather than on ability to kiss ass.
A ROYAL COOKOUT CHRISTMAS, coming to a Hallmark Channel near you, it’ll be the Bomb Dot Com.
(I will defend Guy Fieri until either my dying day or we find out he did something more appalling than opening a bad restaurant. Right now all I see is a bro whose entire job is raising the profile of small independent restaurants and chefs, appreciating a wide variety of ethnic foods and encouraging others to do the same, and performing mass gay weddings, while people make fun of the fact that he’s fat and has frosted tips.)
