Things I Wish I Knew Early On
Iām entering my junior year of college and have been creating a list of things I wish I knew earlier than now, like back in middle school or high school. Learn from me with these things, and feel free to add-on whatever you think fits!
Buy Victoriaās Secret underwear and bras. The quality is way better than anything else and definitely worth the money.
Go to the movies by yourself. It may seem weird at first but it really isnāt. Plus you donāt talk anyway. Treat yo self.
Begin saving money early on. Save it all up. Travel with the savings.
Donāt waste all your money on cheap clothes. Donāt solely shop at stores like H&M and Forever 21. Get the latest trends from there and thatās it.
Spend more money for higher quality clothes. Especially for jeans. But donāt buy $200 jeans. $50-$100 is plenty.
Work hard. Get a job. Even if itās crappy. The experience (and money) is important.
Study hard. Even if it sucks. I regret not trying harder in high school and am pushing myself more now in college (thus this studyblr). Learn all the things.
Simple basic items for clothes look cleaner and are easier. Donāt wear tons of patterns.
Buy yourself a flannel. A good, soft one too. Flannels are amazing.
If someone doesnāt make you feel good about yourself, donāt spend time with them. Itās not worth it.
Donāt keep tons of knick knacks. You donāt need them.
Keep a decorative box and put small memories in them each time you do things. Ticket stubs, wrist bands, fliers. Then when itās full, go through it and enjoy all the memories. Then, throw them out after and start over.
You donāt owe anyone anything. No explanations. No apologies. (Except maybe your family). When you choose to give them those things, it will mean more because you will actually mean it and want to mend your relationship.
Watch the sunset. Itās fucking beautiful.
If you are not comfortable, donāt do it. Leave the situation.
Learn the balance between school, work, social, and personal lives. Put equal time into all four. Even your personal life.
You are your own best friend and will have your own back, so spend time with yourself. Treat yourself (but not too often) and enjoy your own company.
Talk to yourself. It is good to be able to have a conversation with yourself and think things through fully.
Sometimes you have to be impulsive. It takes just three seconds of spontaneity to get yourself out of your comfort zone. Sometimes this means making new friends or overcoming a fear.
Life will tear you down sometimes. It is okay to cry. But just remember, when you hit rock-bottom, thereās only up from there.
Ancient Roman Dogtag,
Inscription Reads:Ā āHold me if I am lost and return me to my master Viventius on the estate of Callistusā
~~~
TENE ME NE FVGIA[M] ET REVO CA ME AD DOM[I]NVM EV VIVENTIVM IN AR[E]A CALLISTI
Adorable ancient history
YES.
i hope 2018 is the year when you spend the least amount of time pretending everythings fine
this is stomp dog it shows up to stomp away sadness
Itās okay that youāre not who you thought you would be
wow this is one of the softest things I have read on here.
Yesterday my dad told me something that I think maybe more people need to hear.
Youāre allowed to just do things for fun.
He told me that in this modern society, especially the United States, we seem to have this attitude that we shouldnāt do something unless weāre aiming to be the best at it. If we canāt sing like Beyonce or Frank Sinatra or something thereās no point to singing. If we canāt make the next big breakthrough thereās no point in looking into mechanics and engineering.
But, he tells me, it took him a long time to figure out that life doesnāt have to be a race. If you want to take up the piano when youāre a teenager or later youāre not going to master it. Youāre not going to be able to play to huge concert halls, but that also shouldnāt stop you. You can study a language out of curiosity and then drop the ball if you want. You can just get okay at something or even be terrible at it. You can drop it for days or years and then pick it up again and it doesnāt have to be a shameful thing.
Iām really glad he told me that because today I opened my sketchpad for the first time in months and just started drawing. And it looks terrible. But I donāt care. I donāt have the talent or patience or spacial awareness to get anywhere near good at drawing, but itās fun. It helps me focus my mind and nobody has to see it.
And because of what he told me, Iām thinking maybe someday soon I will take up the bass guitar. And I wonāt worry about how well I do, or how fast I learn, or that I havenāt played an instrument since sixth grade, or that I donāt have that much time to practice. Iām just gonna enjoy the experience. Maybe Iāll try swing dancing again and take a class because Iām not the best dancer but damn if it isnāt fun.
Yeah, you donāt have to be good at things. Itās not a requirement. Maybe that seems obvious but it had never occurred to me before. Youāre allowed to just enjoy what youāre doing. For me, that feels like a life changing revelation. I donāt have to be good at something to like it. I donāt have to put 100% effort into everything I do. Itās kind of amazing.
i fucking hate dating nerds one single time i wore a star wars shirt to see a dude and he was like, āwow are u wearing that to impress meā and i said, āstar wars episode 4 was seen by approximately 110 million people during its initial theatrical run in 1977ā
Congratulations. Youāre dating people who for the longest time have been putting up with bullying, mocking, and scorn for most of their lives. That kind of shit stays with people. So imagine their surprise when they see a member of the opposite sex, who Iām assuming is really attractive in comparison to most people, wear attire that reps nerd culture. Which even though is accepted by the masses (if youāre reasonably attractive) is still rare. Now Iām not saying that youāre not allowed to be scornful Iām just saying expect it and donāt be surprised when you hear it. Ok? OK.
why i dont date fucking nerds: exhibit B
Bolded emphasis mine. Gross.
Stands on nearest chair: ATTENTION MALE NERDS. YOU ARE NOT SUFFERING FROM A SHORTAGE OF FEMALE NERDS. THERE ARE VAST NUMBERS OF US, AND WE RARELY HAVE A HARD TIME FINDING EACH OTHER. YOU ARE WITHOUT FEMALE COMPANY BECAUSE YOU ARE WHINEY ASSBABIES WHO THINK YOU OWN THINGS BECAUSE YOU LIKE THEM, AND BECAUSE YOU SOMEHOW THINK YOU SUFFER BULLYING WHEREAS GIRL NERDS SOMEHOW NEVER DO. STOP PRETENDING YOU GET TO BE ASSHOLES BECAUSE YOU HAVE A āTRAGIC PASTā OR YOU WILL DIE ALONE. IF YOU THINK GIRL NERDS DONāT GET BULLIED ITāS LIKELY BECAUSE THOSE GIRLS DONāT WANT TO TALK TO YOU, BECAUSE OF THIS SORT OF ATTITUDE.
also: fucking no one mocks nerds anymore. Game of thrones is the most watched show on tv, everyone and their mom is playing video games, dungeons and dragons is more popular than itās ever been.
To conclude
iām obligated to reblog the Critical Whale
2018 I just wanna learn to forgive myself
My favorite scene
we have stories about people from ancient rome like crassus and antonia (the daughter of mark antony and octavia) who loved their pet eels so much that they decorated them with necklaces and earrings and trained them to come when their names were called and iād just like to say i really appreciate that people have been doing weird things in the name of loving their pets basically since people have existed
#hortensius had a whole bunch of fish and he loved them so much that if he actually wanted to Eat fish heād buy them from nearby instead#lov how this was such a Thing that cicero had a word for itĀ (x)
PLEASE tell me what this word was i need to know
āpiscinariiā which iāve seen translated as āfish-breedersā! he uses it when heās complaining about them in ad atticum 1.19 and 1.20
poc: why is everyone in this film white
white person defending a movie with an all white cast: itās set in New York in the 1920s !! every single person in the WEST before the year 2016 was a white! historical accuracy!
poc: okā¦so why has this movie about Moses, set in Ancient Egypt, got an all white cast
white person defending a movie with an all white cast: shut the hell your mouth! skin colour doesnāt matter! it should be the best person for the jobā¦.like this white guyā¦ā¦ā¦ with EYELINER
If youāre a Non-Muslim and you see a Muslim praying in public, could you please not pass in front of them?
Go behind them, but not in front. š
Oh, signal boost! I didnāt know this.
Okay, but also: if you see a Muslim praying in public and they have something in front of them, like a purse or a bag or something like that, you can pass in front of them, but pass in front of that object.
itās called a sutrah, and itās meant to act as a physical barrier between the person praying and someone who might happen to pass in front.
Also, if you did this and didnāt know, please donāt beat yourself up over it. Now you know! Muslims arenāt supposed to pass in front of Muslims praying, either, because prayer is communication with God and you donāt want to break that connection.
Spread culture, respect customs, be good people. Simple as that.
Didnāt know this.
Similarly, if a Jew is saying the Shemonah Esrei prayer (whispered, moving only the mouth, standing facing east with legs together) donāt go in front unless thereās a barrier.
Shit No One Told Me About My Period
I knew the basics before I got it, but I had no clueā¦
* The blood wouldnāt necessarily be red. When I first got my period, I spent a few min looking at my underwear wondering how I shit myself. I didnāt know the blood could look brown, or be thick.
* That tampons werenāt a good idea yet. I was 10 or 11 when I got my first period and physically smaller than an adult woman. My first attempt at inserting a tampon was very painful and unsuccessful. I wouldnāt use them until I was around 14 or so.
* That when you use pads the blood can get on your bottom and Iād have to occasionally clean off the toilet seat after using it.
* That getting your first period DOES NOT mean youāre fully developed and fully able to bear children. I could have technically gotten pregnant at that age, but I was still a child and pregnancy would have put my life in danger because I was still physically immature.
* That it wouldnāt be regular for another few years.
* That very painful cramping is NOT NORMAL once you reach your 20s and is cause for concern.
* That the blood and tissue you pass can look chunky or stringy and not like blood from a cut.
* That stress can halt your period for months BUT
* That doesnāt mean you canāt get pregnant
Feel free to add your own
Relatable
-passing blood clots is completely normal
-that your period may straight up skip a month when you first get it
-and then itāll happen twice in the same month
-getting your period does NOT automatically make you a woman
Painful cramping isnāt normal in your 20ās? Thatās a little concerning, mine have been getting exponentially worse
It is NOT normal.Ā
I can 100% guarantee you have endometriosis, PCOS, or another hormone problem. If your doctor says itās normal, DEMAND a second opinion.Ā
Thinking that itās normal is how people end up infertile or dead.Ā Itās why so many women under 40 these days are having an almost impossible time either conceiving or preventing conception. Because no one teaches anyone that itās the sign of trouble that can very seriously hurt you.Ā
Anyone who has severe cramps, heavy bleeding, or irregular periods after about 19 years old should seek medical advice. None of those are normal.Ā
If you have skin tags, a hard time losing weight, migraines related to your period, depression that is amplified when menstruating, severe mood swings, sleep disturbances that get worse with menstruation, or any other significant health problem that started with puberty and is worse when hormones are fluctuating you need to be checked.Ā
None of the things that people relate to women on their periods is actually an example of a healthy woman. Itās an example of people who need one form of treatment or another.Ā
Do NOT go to a general doctor. Find a womenās health center. Obgyn doctors. ASK SPECIFICALLY FOR A FEMALE DOCTOR. (Also helps with creating a demand for female doctors, win-win)
And if the doctor you do see tried to write you off as ānothingā or āits normalā? Politely insist for another doctor. People forget: you are paying them for a service. If you believe the doctor is not taking you or your problems seriously, ASK FOR ANOTHER DOCTOR. Specifically, āDo you have another doctor on staff who is more experienced with female healthā. It is WELL within your right to change doctors as you see fit - you owe no loyalty to one specific doctor if they arenāt meeting your needs.
Reblogging for all my followers with vaginas. I have so many sisters and friends with vaginas and I didnāt know most of this. I turn 30 soon. Youād think Iād have pick up these bits of information over the years in conversation.
Hey!! Hey everybody with periods!!! If you have a period you should read this, because itās helpful, and people with periods really arenāt taught enough about their own bodies.
even if u personally donāt get a period, someone u know/care abt prob does & u should pass this along
womenās health is health & we should all know these things, i feel
