Who Let the Dogs Out? (Plot of the Week)
The citizens of San Francisco were just beginning to accept their new world when a danger far greater than a few demons rolled into town. Ted Murphy knew that he wouldn’t survive long in the new society, so he decided to reinvent himself. Evolution was one of humanity’s greatest assets, after all. In a matter of months, Ted Murphy became Arawn, king of Ännwn. The supernatural world that San Francisco had become was not exactly like the video games that Ted was accustomed to, but there were similarities. These similarities made learning magic far easier than they might have been without previous knowledge, and Ted soon found that he had a natural talent for it. He’d heard rumors of demonkind taking over the city, and he knew that when that happened, the outlook for humans wouldn’t be good, so he devised a plan. The best way to get into the demons’ good graces was to impress them, and Ted had found the perfect spell to do just that. He summoned an ancient pack of wild dogs known as the Cŵn Annwn and set them loose upon the city, employing them to attack humans and show the demons in charge that while Arawn, king of Ännwn might be human, he was in no way on their side.
About the Cŵn Annwn:
The Cŵn Annwn have white fur, red ears, and sharp teeth
They cannot attack the one who has summoned them, as he is largely in control of their actions
They are incorporeal, spectral beings
The Cŵn Annwn’s howl is loudest at a distance, and becomes softer as it gets closer to its victims, luring them into a false sense of security
It's officially opening day!

It has been eight months since the existence of demons became common knowledge and my archive began. In that time, countries’ governments have either been significantly damaged or collapsed altogether. Corporations no longer exist, and economies slowed to a crawl at best. Don’t go looking for any luxury goods. The only things be exchanged across countries are the bare necessities. Lucky for you newcomer, San Francisco is on the ocean and has easy access to trading on the Pacific. You’re probably like most people and came here for that formerly beautiful but now dingy grey water, for further escape or easier living. And for that, we offer a formal welcome in this article.
Let’s start off with a short lesson on very recent events. One day, you’ll be helping your kids with homework on this subject, so listen up. In the United States, what is left of the government is deeply corrupt and without real, tangible power. In the beginning, government leaders wanted to eradicate demons in order to keep humanity safe, but as time went on, it became clear that this was an impossible goal. Since this realization, the government has altered its goals. Instead of destroying demons, they now strive to understand them. It is their hope that understanding is the first step to cohabitation.
Unfortunately, the government’s methods of coming to understand these new creatures were unconventional at best. And by unconventional, I mean downright inhumane. I don’t usually get political in these articles, but in my opinion, demons are people too, and if that increases harmony, restores the economy and boosts sales of my detailed memoirs, well that’s just a happy coincidence. Anyway, their fear of the demons and monsters, who they had only seen previously in their nightmares, made them terrified and act as though they were animals ravaging the countryside. They supposedly wanted to figure out what made these creatures tick, so the searches and kidnappings began.
Testing facilities were set up all around the country and demons, slayers, werewolves, and the like were rounded up wherever the government could find them. Because of their limited knowledge of supernatural beings, finding and capturing subjects wasn’t easy. The creatures I did tythat they did manage to capture were subjected to blood work and intense physical stress in order to test their limits. While these tests told them demons’ weaknesses and strengths, they did nothing to teach them how to live side by side with the creatures.
If you’re looking for work in town, best you pick up a trade and right quick. With government offices, most large companies, fast food and restaurant chains have shut down in San Francisco. Those with a job, generally in freelancing, as an entrepreneur or owning a shop reaped the rewards of a stable income while those who weren’t employed struggled, selling off their goods just to survive. The more time goes by, the more obvious who is from money and who is not. Those who had money, and the time to get it out of the bank before that system collapsed, did so and life for them hasn’t changed much. Whereas the middle classers are having a hard time just making enough for food.
Speaking of food, let’s make some things clear. Now I know you’re hungry. We all are. But do not, I repeat do not, just think you are going to waltz into a grocery store like nothing’s changed. To keep out thieves and looters, owners have installed windows and request to see your grocery lists to get your items for you. They’re also started adding some of the less savoury items aimed specifically at demon clientele. If you ever wanted to try (insert disgusting thing here), though, then it’s your lucky day. Bars have also added products for non-human clients, but the demons aren’t being so welcoming, so steer clear of their bars. If your desire is to mingle, my recommendation would be Euphoria.
Most people travel by bicycle now, conserving their gasoline for long distance travel and with the pumps not being refilled as drilling comes to a halt, supplies are running low. And the only public transportation left in operation is the tram downtown, but it’s more dangerous than riding down San Fran’s steep hills without a helmet. The most dangerous, shady and gruesome trades and ordeals take place there, so avoid it unless your life depends on it, because you might lose it onboard. And, for general safety, be cautious around everyone. Paranoia and skittishness are at an all time high, so best to keep a distant attitude and then there will hopefully be no trigger happy moments. The last thing we need is to be killing each other.
If you get hurt, hospitals are likely not your best bet. Supplies are low, prices are high and it gets a little medieval in there, with doctors resorting to cauterizing wounds as they run out of bandages and the like. Best look for a faith healer or shaman. Most magic shops can point you in the right direction, but take everything with a grain of salt. Some of them are just looking to get their slow moving products off the shelves and using their contacts as peddlers.
After the chaos had died down, people were desperate to get in touch with the people they cared about. The law firm Wolfram and Hart saw an opportunity awaiting them. Using their vast connections and limitless financial resources, they took control of one of the main sources of communication in the 21st century: the internet. Sole control over such a valuable asset allows the firm to charge people and demons alike outrageous fees to use the internet. Under other circumstances, it probably would not have worked; people would have refused to pay had other forms of communication been widely available, but because of the way things were, they had no choice but to deal with the fees. Cell phones, while operable, became a far less convenient means of communication due to failing towers and the fall of many major carrier providers.
So, there’s the jist of what you need to know to survive in our little slice of civilization. Follow the rules, and maybe I’ll see you around, although you won’t see me. Break them, and all I can do is wish you the best of luck in the afterlife.
Species: Witch Age: 24 Face Claim: Kat Graham Play by: Hannah Bio: It didn’t take a post-apocalyptic world to lead Regina down a path of being on her own. That was something she’d learned long before she realizes just what a threat the demons of the world were. Though her parents had been well off, she’d always been alone. While it left her feeling full of resentment for every missed meal or school event when she had been a young girl, she was thankful for it now. When the world started turning into a place of chaos, it wasn’t long before her parents had died. The loss had been saddening, but the way Regina saw it she at least had one less thing to worry about.
Thankfully, she already had a sword of her own design ready to go. Survival had always been her game and now was not different. Regina could remember the day she discovered magic as if it were yesterday. A classmate of hers, Laura, had been doing a small spell by her locker and Regina was quick to catch on. After some negotiating, she had commandeered herself a tutor. Before long, she was performing spells all on her own and far surpassing the girl who taught her the basics. Laura had never seemed to mind though. For a time, they had even lived together after graduating from high school, but it wasn’t long before Laura felt the need to snoop and find out what was going on within the demon world that was taking over their own. As it turned out, it was this choice that would lead to Regina outliving her tutor and eventual friend.
The death of Laura made Regina weary of sticking around her apartment in Los Angeles, so she was quick to make her way to San Francisco even if it was just as hellish these days. At least it would clear her from any trace of association with Laura. The world may have been a post-apocalyptic mess, but she was determined to get through it even if she had to play dirty. More often than not, she did. With demons lurking around every corner and witches out to steal magic, Regina was always keeping an eye out for potential mishaps that could cost her life. She had ran into a few fights, but none that she hadn’t been able to magic herself out of. Although magic had always been a tool to better herself, she could never have predicted how imperative it would become to her survival.
Now that she’s living in San Francisco, she’s been doing what she can to gather materials for both living and magic while staying out of any potential scuffs. Regina has no care for what the monsters of the city do so long as they don’t harm her. It’s a selfish mentality, but it’s what’s keeping her alive so she’ll stick to it.
Personality traits: independent, selfish, solitary, quiet, wary of others, bitter, strategic, secretive, street smart
Abilities:
Proficient with natural magic and familiarizing herself with more of the dark stuff
Good at pick pocketing and other forms of theft
Streets are no longer entirely safe for humans, but for demons, they couldn’t be more secure. As a result, many businesses that were once owned and operated by humans have been taken over by supernatural creatures. One such business is Stop’n’Shop, a small grocery store. Once a family-run business, it now belongs to a group of chaos demons. They are able to travel in and out of the city safely to get supplies and keep the store in stock.
In order to prevent rioting, people are not allowed inside the store. As a result, no one knows the exact layout other than the demons that work there.
When retrieving groceries for their customers, the chaos demons and Mok'tagar demons alike have been known to slip a few embarrassing items into the bag.
Demons are generally charged less for groceries than humans.
Owned by Ava Woods, Clairvoyant is a widely popular location for psychic readings. Prior to the fall of society, no one had really heard of the owner, but afterwards her credibility skyrocketed. Reports of her predictions coming true flooded the streets, and people lined up at the door to find out their fates. While Clairvoyant was originally a walk-in shop, the new found popularity forced the owner to instead do readings by appointment only.
The shop is decorated with generic psychic accessories, such as crystal balls and smooth, colorful stones and shiny crystals.
There is a receptionists’ area outside of the main office where customers go to confirm appointments. Anyone without an appointment will be asked to leave immediately.
It isn’t rare to find a shify demonic creature lounging in near the door to the office.
There was a time when the California Pacific Medical Center was ranked among the top in the country. However, after the destruction of the Golden Gate Bridge, supplies became scarce and the hospital had to make due with what it had. In the months following the fall of modern society, the hospital did the best it could in rationing supplies, but injuries and disease were becoming more common due to the state of the city, and no new supplies were coming in. Before long, the hospital only had the bare minimum of medical supplies left in their inventory. They began having to turn away patients. It started with the ones who weren’t sick or injured enough to need the medication, but before long they began having to turn away everyone they couldn’t help. The hospital now caters mostly to those who have connections or who do not need a vast amount of medication in order to recover.
The interior is dingy and dirty, as the cleaning staff had to be let go months ago.
The rooms have been stripped of anything valuable and now consist of only a bed.
Due to the termination of many nursing and physician positions, the staff is significantly smaller than it once was, meaning that less gets done. For example, bedsheets aren’t changed and paging responses may take hours rather than minutes.
Only the first two floors of the hospital are open for use.
Whether you’re looking to test your skills, enhance your abilities, or just have some entertainment for the evening, Enchanted Etiquette is the place for you. Owned and founded by Lien Shen, this club has become a gathering place for all kinds of magic users.
The first floor displays a large fighting ring in the center with bleachers surrounding it. This is where magic users show their skills and fight for each other’s power.
There is a bar in the corner where drinks are served. They are usually far pricier than they might be somewhere else.
The second floor contains Lien’s office space, where she handles her finances and manages the bar.
There is a large training center on this floor where Lien and any guests she chooses to invite can hone their skills and keep themselves strong between fights without the risk of losing their power.
Euphoria is a place where humans and demons come to intermingle. It is one of the few remaining bars in San Francisco that is relatively safe for human customers, although it is not entirely secure; rumors of humans disappearing from the bar are fairly common. There are rumors that the bar’s owner, Cameron Reed, might be behind some of the disappearances, but nothing can be proven.
Luxurious interior
A large bar takes up an entire wall of the large downstairs area. It serves many expensive drinks and the bartender can make anything that a customer requests.
The area not taken up by the bar is filled with lots of tables and booths so that there are alternative seating options for after the bar seats fill up (which they tend to do rather quickly).
The upstairs is occupied by a large dance floor and DJ stand.
The police force operates from the same building that it did prior to the fall of society, but things are much different now. The building is a mess, with papers and unread reports littering the floors, and the halls are constantly overflowing with desperate people. Due to the state of the city, the crime rate has gone up significantly and the police can only focus on the more vital crimes. As a result, things like traffic control, public disturbances, and robberies go overlooked.
At the front of the station is a small office where people go to place complaints and report crimes. An officer is stationed here at all times.
A narrow hallway branches off from the office and leads to the main offices where officers and detectives work on paperwork and wait for assignments. This area is usually fairly empty, as the officers are out on the streets attempting to keep order.
There are three interrogation rooms, but they rarely see any use anymore.
Before the revelation of the supernatural, the idea of a demon that granted vengeful wishes might have been preposterous or even frightening. After, it became a business plan for Iris Irving. The world was different, and everyone had something to avenge. Many people began seeking out vengeance demons, and when Iris saw this, the first professional vengeance demon was born. Wish Like This is set up so that anyone can come in at any time during the day and request for their wish to be granted for a sizable but not unreasonable fee. Iris Irving has gained some fame from this, but she refuses to grant wishes outside of the shop.
The office space is fairly small, but the interior is decorated to the max with paintings and trinkets covering every wall.
A small desk sits in the corner of the room with a chair across from it. The owner sits there and decides what wishes to grant.
There is a suggestions box near the door in which customers can drop recommendations for creative vengeance tactics. The box is there as more of a courtesy to the customers than as a tool for Iris, as the suggestions are rarely ever taken into consideration.
FC: Britne Oldford
Species: Slayer
Age: 22
Played By: Danica
Bio: Some people went their whole lives never knowing what was going on around them. They got to be clueless of the dangers of the outside world, got to walk the streets at night without fear. Elaine had never been one of those people. Blissful ignorance wasn’t an option when your father spends every day tracking down dangerous criminals and putting them where they belong.
Having the chief of police as a father could be scary, but while Elaine worried for her dad’s safety, she trusted that he could take care of himself. He devoted countless hours of his time and energy ensuring that she could do the same. Not many girls could say that they had started self defense training before they started school, but for Elaine , it was just a part of life. Besides, spending most of her free time learning to protect herself was better than finding herself defenseless against someone who might want revenge against her father.
Her father had told her time and time again that the list of people who might want revenge against him was long. He told her stories of the criminals he’d arrested, spun tales of the ones who he hadn’t been able to catch, and made sure that his daughter knew exactly how dangerous life in the city was. She never complained about curfew, never tried sneaking out in the middle of the night. She knew the types of people who were out there, and she didn’t want to meet any of them, self defense training or no.
Elaine was called as a slayer on the same day that she received a different type of call. In a way, she’d always known that the call was coming, but it came as a shock all the same. Her father was gone, killed on the job by some mindless criminal. Elaine ’s mother had walked out years earlier when being married to the chief of police had become too stressful, so she was well and truly on her own.
She discovered her power shortly after hanging up the phone, when and angry punch went through the kitchen wall and her clenched fist found its way into the living room on the other side. At first, Elaine chalked it up to shock, but when the existence of the supernatural was revealed mere weeks later, she understood what it really meant. A bit of research on the subject brought up a page on vampire slayers which detailed their origins and their ‘destiny.’ Slaying demons was what Elaine had, apparently, been called to do, and she wasn’t one to disappoint.
To cope with the aftermath of her father’s death, Elaine threw herself into slaying demons, vampires, and any other supernatural creature that she could find. She was familiar enough with the five stages of grief to know that she had skipped straight over the first stage. There was no point in denying her father’s death, after all, but she was angry. Angry with the man who had killed him, and angry with her father himself for getting sloppy and letting himself die when he knew she needed him. She expressed this anger through violence, but that wasn’t the only way she got her feelings out.
Demons were evil, but they hadn’t killed her father. She’d known since she was a little girl who the real bad guys were, and while she knew that her father would have never accepted her if she killed a human, there was nothing that could restore her faith in them. This lack of faith made it easy to justify picking a pocket every now and then, be it from someone she was walking passed in the street or a would-be-victim of a demon she’d slayed. They sort of owed her, anyways, so there was really nothing to feel guilty about. It wasn’t like anyone could accuse her of turning on her own species, either.
After all, she wasn’t human anymore. Maybe she never really was.
Personality Traits: Bitter about her father’s death, arrogant, feels entitled to certain things, cunning, impatient, sarcastic, takes advantage of people, skeptical, distrusting, holds a grudge, witty, uses slaying as an outlet for anger
Abilities:
Standard slayer strength, agility, and healing
Skilled in hand to hand combat
Knowledgeable about the law and justice system
Skilled thief and pickpocket
FC: Michael Ealy
Species: Gancanagh
Age: 235 (looks 32)
Bio: One of a kind. To some people, such a phrase might be seen as a compliment. To Aedan, it was a bitter truth. No one was sure how the Gancanagh had died out, but there were theories. Some said that they were too interested in meeting and seducing humans to worry about reproducing amongst themselves. Others insisted it was simply the natural order of things, but everyone could agree on one thing; the once prominent race of demons were dead.
Except, they weren’t. At least, not entirely. Somehow, Aedan had survived, outlived the rest of his species, and done it all without anyone knowing. As far as the rest of the world knew, Gancanagh were extinct.
Aedan was okay with that. The less people who knew about his existence, the better. His main goal was to feed his desires. He frequented bars and public areas, finding a different human every night. It was the dream of any Gancanagh, but Aedan found himself wanting more. Although he was rarely without company, he felt alone. Humanity was a remarkable species; compelling, interesting, and intelligent, but they could never really understand him. They couldn’t know what it was like to be one of a kind.
The Gancanagh were gone. There was no changing that. A single demon couldn’t repopulate the species, and Aedan knew that trying would be both foolish and futile. The most he could do was help produce half-breeds, but it wasn’t nearly the same. Aedan sought out the company of other demons to help ease his loneliness, but not many of them shared his respect for humanity.
Things only got worse after demons overtook the Earth. Many demons were banding together in hopes of wiping out humanity altogether. Aedan tried to protest, but because his race had been dead for so long and his belief in humanity, most demons refused to trust him. Aedan appeared to be, as he always was, on his own. Or at least, he thought he was.
It turned out, he wasn’t the only demon who didn’t want to see humanity destroyed. There were other demons who, for whatever reason, wanted humans kept alive. Some, like Brachen, were friendly with humans and were reluctant to see them destroyed for sentimental reasons. Others, like vampires, needed humans as a food and energy source. It wasn’t an ideal scenario, but Aedan was willing to take any help that he could get. He managed to form a small group of people to work against the demons out to destroy humanity, and while they were vastly outnumbered, they were clever.
They helped in whatever way they could, be it saving a single human from an angry demon on the street or by preventing terrorist attacks on public places. Humanity became slowly aware of their allies, and grateful for their work.
Aedan knew that he was probably fighting a losing battle, and that he had a long way to go before humanity was truly safe, but to him, it seemed worth it. Humans couldn’t understand him completely, but they put forth more of an effort than most demons did, and that was worth protecting.
Personality traits: cunning, intelligent, charming, smooth talker, flirtatious, laid back, lonely, wary of attachments, i want him in my pants
Abilities:
Naturally found appealing/attractive to humans
Capable of talking his way out of most situations
Longer lifespan than humans
Produces an addictive, intoxicating substance from skin that attracts sexually mature partners
FC: Jessica Sula
Species: Werewolf
Age: 21
Bio: 17. That’s how old Auden was when she was bitten by a werewolf. Of course, at the time, she had no idea it was a werewolf. As far as she knew, it was just a random, wild animal that landed her in the emergency room. A few stitches and some pain pills later and she was back at home, resting on her couch and watching television.
For a while after that, everything was normal. The bite began to heal, she went back to school, and got on with her life. At the time, her life was preparing for the upcoming prom. She’d already bought her dress, her shoes, picked out her hair style… it was a waiting game at that point. The big day finally arrived, and while the animal bite wasn’t completely hidden by her prom dress, she managed to cover it with make-up.
She arrived at the event just before dusk, ready to start the partying early and keep it going late. Things were going great at first; the music was fantastic, the dancing fun, and the food amazing. That was before the moon rose. Auden didn’t know what was happening. One moment, she was having the time of her life, and the next, all she knew was pain.
The next day, she woke up in the woods near the location where the prom was held. What was left of her extravagant, expensive dress was in ruins, and she was covered in blood. When she tried to think back on the previous night, she was terrified to find that she remembered nothing. Where the pain started, the memories fell short.
The first thing Auden did was get some clothes; the ones she had hardly covered anything anymore, and while the gown she found hanging on a clothes line near where she’d woken up was hardly fashionable, it was funcional. As soon as she was clothed, she went to the police. What they told her was horrifying.
The night before, an unidentified animal had attacked her school's prom. Dozens of her classmates were dead, and even more lay in the hospital critically injured. No one could say for sure where the animal had come from; or, at least, none of them were willing to tell the police. It seemed crazy, after all. Girls didn’t turn into beasts and tear apart their friends, but that was what had happened, and while Auden’s classmates weren’t willing to tell the police what they’d seen, they were more than happy to discuss it with her. She was a monster, they said, and she was inclined to agree.
Over the next few years, Auden withdrew significantly in social circles. Whatever friends she’d had who had survived the prom now wanted nothing to do with her, and she couldn’t blame them. After graduation, she did not enroll in college. Instead, she got a job in a factory and stayed as far away from humanity as possible. She found herself living for the three nights a month when she didn’t have to deal with it anymore, the nights where she could be someone else.
After the fall of the government and the rise of demons, Auden saw a new opportunity. She wasn’t alone anymore, she wasn’t the only supernatural creature in existence. Maybe there was someone who could help her. She’d heard tales of werewolves who’d learned to control the change, to fight it off and stay human, so it only made sense for the opposite to be true as well. If they could be human all month long, maybe she could be a wolf all month long. The thought alone was enough to make her start frequenting demon bars, looking for anyone who might be able to fulfill her wish to never have to be herself again.
Personality Traits: Shy, guilt ridden, empathetic, loyal, weary (of her kind and in general), sweet, genuine
Abilities:
Enhanced strength and sense of smell
Limited knowledge of the supernatural
Knowledge of drama and theater
Ametaur actress
FC: Charles Michael Davis
Species: Cambion (Half-human, half-incubus)
Age: 31
Bio: Growing up half-human, half-incubus, Cameron thought he could have it all with the flash of a smile, or it always seemed that way. In high school, he could manipulate whoever he wanted for whatever he wanted. If it didn’t work, it wasn’t worth his time. No matter how many friends he had, clubs he was part of, it never seemed like enough. He was lonely.
The melancholy and lust for power carried on during university. With a mix of brains and cunning, he got through with A’s and B’s. That wasn’t without getting aid, he found that in the form of teachers’ assistants and friends. It wasn’t the grades that mattered as much as the influence he gained, that was what made him feel like he had something, but he was still searching for more.
It wasn’t a surprise to anyone when Cameron ended up in politics. His father was weary of the choice, considering that his abilities weren’t all human, it was the allure that the incubus in him brought on. Despite the protests, Cameron did it anyway, thriving on the power and influence he gained more rapidly than his peers whom had joined at the same time. Before long, he was climbing the ranks, and loving every second of it. The office adored him, and more importantly, he loved himself with a title. He still wanted more and found himself envious of those with close relationships.
Cameron was one of the first to hear about demons existing in his workforce. He already knew, of course, but the people who were practically his puppets were panicking despite his attempts to calm them. They were all scared out of their minds, and his calm attitude only made them suspicious. For once in his life, his charms were not only useless, but actually working against him. Rumors of Cameron being a demon were going around the office, people avoided him, and he got anonymous threats instead of anonymous gifts.
With more demons pouring out of hellmouths everywhere, the government was shut down. With it went all of Cameron’s power, life and pride. Again he felt that feeling of not having enough, not being enough, and he hated it. He had almost everything, he was so close, and demons had ruined it for him.
Angry, Cameron went to a bar. He’d done it plenty of times, find a pretty lady, sleep with her, it was practically a routine. With his eyes set on the lucky lady, he threw a few compliments here and there, and when she was putty in his hands, he took her home. While he was kissing her, something was different. He was getting energy off it, he felt euphoric. She stopped responding and he found he’d killed her. The half-incubus in him had taken over for the first time. Instead of feeling guilty about hurting her, he focused on the happiness the feed brought on.
Over the next few days people flocked to him more than usual. He basked in the attention, the power he held over them. With this kind of energy, he could make the humans all love him, and the demons, too. He wanted it all, and soon he’d have it. It all started with bending the public to his will.
Cameron opened a bar for humans and demons alike, a kind of neutral ground, with enchantments making it impossible for everyone but him to harm others called Euphoria. He began hiding his secret and feeding regularly. He was ready for the public to love him, In fact, he was hungry for it, but that didn’t stop him for looking for something, he just didn’t know what yet.
Personality Traits: egotistical, charming, manipulative, affectionate, extremely lonely, power hungry, driven, impartial, sociable, loves being the center of attention
Abilities:
Naturally appealing to humans due to pheromones
Slightly stronger and faster than humans
Feedings are unnecessary for him to survive, but when he does all his powers are more intense
Holds influence in some of the higher class social circles from his time in politics
Knowledgable in the supernatural
