Pika has been acting a lot more jumpy than usual. He would sniff the air, remembering a familiar scent. There was something that he was trying to tell his trainer, and Red just didn’t understand. The truth was, it’s been years since he saw him… Sometimes he’d have dreams of that faithful day. A whole colony of Pikachu, wiped out and caught by a Team Rocket gunt with a Raichu. Two littermates being able to evolve so young without the help of a human, only by sheer power and will to protect their loved ones. However…that was the day he saw his brother caught by a human. He himself hated humans because of what they took from him. He did manage to change his mind after meeting Red however.
“Pika pika….” Pika wakes up from his memory and wipes his eyes. Was it bad he wanted to see his little brother again? Feeling how soft the bed was reminded him of his old nest in a hallow tree of Viridian Forest. Being the only two children of their mother and father, they would all cuddle up to stay warm during the cold nights. He knew his mother and father were both caught by Team Rocket, but he still had hope that he escaped. Oh well, it was breakfast time and he could hear the Pokefood being poured into his bowl. Jumping off the bed, Pika headed to the kitchen for breakfast.
There Red was on the phone, probably talking to somebody who worked at the Battle Tree. Is this all Red did now was work? He missed the days when he could adventure around with him, but Pika wasn’t going to leave his side. He knew human adults did get jobs and things like this just happen. He eats his food scilently, his ears twitching like antene to hear what his trainer was saying.
“Hey Ash! Long time no see, baby cuz!” Red leans back in his kitchen chair, holding his cellphone.“You’re in Poni Island now? Sweet! That’s where the Battle Tree is! ….hm? ….Nah, I don’t live in Poni, I stay at the Hano Hotel in Heahea city. ….Yeah on Akala Island.” Ah, just normal human chat. Pika kept eating his food, zoning out of the conversation. “…of course! I’d love to battle! And I’m sure Pikachu would be so happy to see another Kanto Pikachu! He’s been kinda distant from me ever since I took ‘em to Pikachu Valley.”
Now Pika stopped eating. His ear twitched a bit more. A Kanto Pikachu? And from what Red says this Pikachu was male, so maybe…no…it couldn’t be. There was no way it could be. There are thousands of Pikachu in the world. It would be rare if this was his little brother. He was just having too high of hopes this time. His brother is long gone, another region away, and probably still contained by that guy who caught him. Poor brother…he knew how much he hated Pokeballs…
“Just watch out. I hear Team Rocket is running about again and you know how much they want your Pikachu. But don’t worry, I’ll protect you!”
Team Rocket wanting a Pikachu? Well there were only two Pichu that Team Rocket saw that day that watched them evolve: him and… Oh Arceus…. This has to be! There was no other Pikachu he knew of that could be targeted by Team Rocket!
“Pikachu! Pika pii~! Pika pika chuuu~!”
Pika hopped onto his trainer’s lap speaking as loud as he could. This was it! He was going to see his little brother again! Who cares about the probability, he was going to see his brother! Red giggled seeing how excited Pikachu was. He simply petted the yellow mouse on the head. “Seems Pika is excited too! He must really wanna see you! Okay, see ya then! Bye!” He hangs up his phone and places it in his pocket. Seeing Pika so excited made him excited, maybe he really wanted to see another Pikachu.
After breakfast, Red headed to the Battle Tree, his Pikachu never leaving his shoulder. After days of being so distant, it felt good to see Pikachu back to his original self. Soon they got there and Red stood at the front of the battle facility waiting on his little cousin. Pikachu kept sniffing the air and rushing around excitedly. “Heh, well you’re in a good mood, Pika!”
The Pikachu gives a smile to his trainer and climbed back onto his shoulder nuzzling him slightly. He was going to be reunited with his brother again after all thanks to these two wonderful trainers. “Chuuu~~!”
“Heh, love ya too Pika! Ash’ll be here soon!”
Pikachu had been through a lot over the years, and while he could proudly say that he’d found a new happy family, he’d never forgotten the one that had raised him as a baby Pichu. His parents, who had been captured by Team Rocket, and his brother, who he could only hope had somehow gotten away and was living happily somewhere in Kanto now.
He tried not to worry about it too much, especially after leaving Kanto with Ash. After all, chances were he’d never see his old family again. Some days were harder not to think about it than others, but luckily Ash had been keeping the whole team’s focus on training the past few days. They only had one Grand Trial left to clear and after the rough battles with Nanu, Ash seemed to be taking their training more seriously.
Kukui had suggested Poni Island’s Battle Tree as a good training spot, and the plan was to head out there as soon as breakfast was over.
“Ah, so you live on the same island as Kiawe!” Pikachu lifted one ear at the mention of their friend, wondering who it was Ash was talking to on the phone. Someone he knew, from the way he was talking. The electric mouse lifted his head, watching curiously as a grin spread across Ash’s face.
“Great! I think battling another Pikachu would be perfect training! And don’t worry, we’ll be careful!”
Another Pikachu? Now Pikachu stood up, darting over to Ash and tilting his head to the side. “Pika pi?”
“Hey Pikachu, you wanna train with another Pikachu, right? We’re gonna go see my cousin as soon as everyone’s done eating!” Ash set the phone down and scooped his partner into his arms, chuckling softly as Pikachu let out an excited ‘Pika!’ and climbed onto his arm to jump onto his shoulder.
As soon as they were done eating Lycanroc and Torracat were returned to their pokeballs, Rowlet resting in Ash’s backpack and Pikachu sitting on his shoulder as he raced out the door of the Pokemon Center and headed towards the Battle Tree.
“Red! Alola~!” Ash called once he spotted his cousin, waving an arm in the air. Pikachu’s ears perked up and he straightened his posture to get a better look, but the excited smile on his face faltered as they got closer. The Pikachu on Red’s shoulder looked...familiar.
“Chu?” He was sure he was mistaken. He had to be. There was no way his brother was in Alola, right? As soon as Ash stopped to talk to his cousin, Pikachu hopped down from his shoulder, staring up curiously at the other Pikachu.
