I go through obsessive streaks where I'll re-read a book or series several times, and I've read a LOT of Astarion fics. I came across DWMD a little over a year ago.
No doubt you've heard this dozens of times before, but it is one of a very fics I've found set during the events of the game that don't feel like they're rehashing the plot ad nauseum.
In a community where everyone gives their Tavs a BIG epic backstory, Neve is refreshing because she is so very ordinary. She's a regular person with regular-person problems and then she's thrust into An Epic Narrative to Save The World and even though NOTHING in her life has prepared her for this kind of danger, she's stepping up bc she's just that awesome.
My favorite trope of bravery is the Ordinary Citizen doing Extraordinary Things and you've nailed it with Neve. I love her, and I love your take on her relationship with Astarion. She is EXACTLY what he needs.
thank you so, so much! neve's ordinariness has always been something i'm a little self-conscious of but is deeply important to who she is, so it means a lot to me to hear how that resonates. her "unimpressiveness" at first glance was very purposeful when i was first drafting her - both to contrast with a cast of extremely complex, heroic-scale backstories as well as to sort of champion this feeling of rediscovering what you are capable of.
i'm also a big fan of practical gal x dramatic flamboyant man so i knew i had to torture that vampire with the most beautiful nerd in the world
get it done the weird way. do it in parts. do it “wrong”. do it “late”. do it scared. it’s just better to do it differently than everyone else rather than never do it.

sorry this sat for so long, i haven't been on tumblr in a minute myself - i'm so glad you liked it!! it was really nice to revisit that period of time in their story and i had a lot of fun, so thank you for sparking that fire for me :)
while i must report that under no circumstances would neve lick the dead spider, given proper hazmat gear, she would not hesitate to dissect the spider for research purposes and extract all materials of interest for experimentation in a controlled lab environment
