Gendry stills when he hears her voice, telling himself that he most just be imagining it. Surely he is imagining the sound of Arya’s voice, for the last he had heard she was heading towards her brother Robb. Robb who fell at the Red Wedding where everyone was slaughtered or captured. Had she been captured word would have spread, so surely she had perished or somehow gotten lost?

Regardless, he had resigned himself to the fate of never seeing her again the day he heard of the death of Robb Stark. Instead, despite it all, here she was. She was standing in the entrance to the forge looking older and more world wary, but safe. The bastard felt his chest tighten as he looked at her. She’s still beautiful, he thinks.

He doesn’t really think anything beyond that, just reacts. His mind is blank apart from thoughts of her, not remembering the scolding that he had gotten before he told her he was remaining. He could still hear Harwin and Lem telling him that he would only serve to hurt her if he went with her. Oh how he had cursed them when he heard the news of the Red Wedding.

If he had been there, a thought that had crossed his mind far more than he could count. If I had been there, I could have done something. If I had been there, I could have saved her. If I had been there, I could have died with her. He had never believed the rumors of her marrying Ramsay Snow, in his mind their story had ended with the Red Wedding.

Now, here she was before him. Here she stood in Winterfell, in the doorway to his forge. All of this came to mind in a fleeting rush as his legs moved, as he practically ran to her. Strong arms wrap around her, and he lifts her into a hug and off the ground. Tears are in his eyes once more but he does not care. She is alive. He doesn’t even think about what trouble he could be in when his lips move to meet hers, ending their shared song at ‘forest lass.’

He’s taller but looks just as stupid. Just as soot-covered, and just as strong. She takes a moment to become re-acquainted with the site of him, feeling her heart pound and her stomach tighten. There’ve been reunions where she has been so sure what will happen… with Gendry she’s never been sure. She’d have assumed he had new friends in the brotherhood, maybe married a nice girl in a tavern, smithing down in the Riverlands. Not here in her Winterfell, smithing like he’d always belonged in here.

She sees the shock in him before he moves towards her quicker than she liked these days. It takes everything in her not to move, suddenly expecting a hug, an embrace the same as Jon had given her. Her arms move around him, and her grin grows as laughter tumbles from her. 

She doesn’t expect his lips on hers, and the reaction comes unbidden. Arya pushes him away with as much strength as she’s ever known, letting go, and letting herself drop from his arms. Gendry was supposed to be different. Gendry wasn’t Raff but … He’s excited to see her, and this must be some Kings Landing custom she never learnt, but all she feels is Raff, and all she was to Raff. 

She turns to hide the shaking of her hands, the thin-lipped movement as she makes herself almost as small as possible, gripping her own hands to sort out the need to throw up before she turns around again.

“Missed you too,” She manages to say, not wishing to ruin their reunion. She’s better at acting now. Her teeth ground into her lower lip, whether to keep her from running or collapsing, she doesn’t know. “Sorry, I’m still feeling very Braavosi.” She almost feels the need to shield herself in low valyrian, call herself a different name, it was still her.

Gendry drops to his knee so suddenly, drops his head and Arya backs away just the slightest- it has naught to do with him, or being improper, but her breathing has increased so quickly, as she grips at her clothing, almost eager to free herself so she may throw herself in the river.

"It's not that- gods you acting improper is the only normal thing I-" but his lips had not been soft like his name. His hands had wandered. And Arya had slit his throat.

"You're not the first man to kiss me, you wont be the last. Please. Please get up." Arya needs him be as he always is, before she bursts into tears, or throws up. "And do not touch me. At all. Please. Get up, Stupid before someone comes looking!"

She goes herself, reaches and tries to drag Gendry up, but she's not strong enough, and she slouches, eyes starting at the ground for a moment before little sobs shake her body, hand flying to cover her mouth as she stepped back.

Dany listened as the girl braided her hair, she wanted to make sure that she listened to everything her handmaid said. Listening it made her sad but she was going to do or say but she knew that she hated what she was hearing. She was mad that the Mercedene had endured. This was something that she wanted to change but knew that she couldn’t. There was nothing she could do now but to listen. “I can promise that you are safe here and that no man will hurt you if I have something to say about it,” she replied gently.

“I’m sure but my place is in King’s Landing on the Iron Throne. It’s my birthright ad no matter what and how the men of Westeros see women I am going to change it. I don’t care what they think, I do not want to allow what I have been through to continue to happen,” she said honestly as she looked at her. “Do not apologize, you are speaking the truth of a place I’ve never been too. I want to know these things but I want to make Westeros better than it is, even if it is just a foolish dream.”

Mercedene moves, gripping Dany’s wrists gently. Arya and Mercedene fight. “They don’t want a dragon back,” It’s a soft confession, eyes wide. “The war, it’s breaking them. The North- There are too many kings and queens dead, if they do not accept you…” Shireen Baratheon was the rightful heir after Stannis, Arya whispered in her mind, but Mercedene was loyal to Daenerys. “I am frightened that Westeros is not the place you have been dreaming it is.”

“No matter what it is or isn’t it is still my home, I belong there, not here where I am both loved and hated,” Dany stated honestly. She didn’t know what she was going to do should she lose the throne but she couldn’t give up before she’s even tried. “I may have dreams of what Westeros is like but I’m also realistic, it’s not what I’ve thought since I was a girl and they may not want a dragon but I’m not going to give up without a fight. The Iron Throne is mine by birthright, I have to fight for what I feel is right.”

"They might take you, if you can end the war and their suffering." Mercedene's accent slips for a moment, an emotion hidden in her for her people. No. Arya Starks people. "The North is independent now. They'll want to stay that way."

Francis didn’t know what to say or think right now but he also couldn’t go face Mary now that he knew about Lola. The one thing he’d always wanted was a child and now he was going to be a father but to a child with Lola and not Mary. He didn’t know how to feel and he wanted to talk to someone and that was not his wife or his mother or even Bash. That was how he found himself walking towards her rooms, towards Arya’s rooms. There was a part of him that braced for whatever she had to say but he also knew he deserved it. When he arrived he knocked on the door and waited, hoping she was there.

The knock at her Chambers is unexpected. But as she's only pulling jewelry off, Arya calls for whoever it is to enter.

She spots him in the vanity, and turns around to face the Dauphin. "I wasn't expecting you. What would you like?" A tad informal for her to speaking as such to the Dauphin, but he was good natured and gave her far too much leeway.

     There had been so much darkness that he had started to get used to it. So when suddenly light flooded his vision, impressions of things and people surrounding him, he groaned, tried to turn away from it all. The darkness had been calm, with nothing to pull his attention towards it. Just peace and quiet. It had been nice. This… This was different. And he was not enjoying it.

     Milky white eyes, having lost all their Tully blue, blinked against the light coming off the crackling fire, one arm coming up to shield them against the brightness. He opened his mouth to speak and the voice that came out had nothing of the warmth in it that it used to have. In fact, it did not sound like Robb Stark at all. “Where am I?” The voice was low, gravely, and barely audible, like it was being dragged across rocks and wind before exiting his mouth.

     Still blinking against the bright light, his gaze finally traveled across the group of people surrounding him. None of them were immediately recognizable, but he recognized they were all watching him intently. “Who are you?”

It didn't look like Robb. It didn't sound like Robb. Pleading had given way to creating a monster, not bringing her brother back.

Her eyes wide and stinging with tears, as the Brotherhood gathered round, listening to the voice dragged across rocks, and Arya had to fight her tears.

"Robb-" her voice cracks as she moves into his vision, for it is his body, though the voice is not the same, nor the eyes. "It's me. It's Arya. My hairs all gone, but its... its..." Her tears spilled over, remembering the look in his eye when he'd been stabbed. The scream her mother had let out.

And Arya felt as though it were her that had died.

“Do you believe in love at first sight? Or should I walk past you again?“

It’s not subtle, the way her eyes travel to the queen’s arse. “Not sure about love at first sight, but lust at first sight tells me you should walk passed again.” Her teeth are sinking into her lip, “Love at first sight says you should let me stare at you forever.”

Dany smirked at her. She had not known what to make of the Queen in the North’s sister at first, but it had not taken her long to decide she liked Arya a great deal. Arya, too, it seemed, had often been underestimated in her life, and consistently exceeded those estimations.

She turned, striding from one side of the chamber to the other, her new wool dress (necessary against the cold, but oddly heavy and long) swishing over her toes. “A second look, then, and how do you find? The dress, I mean.” There was definitely a pause there, teasing back.

Though she never wed, she had many offers, and several lovers through the years. Duels were fought over the right to sit beside her, men killed themselves after falling from her favor, poets outdid each other writing songs about her beauty. Her most ardent admirer was her half-brother, Bloodraven, who proposed marriage to her half a hundred times. Shiera gave him her bed, but never her hand. It amused her more to make him jealous.

Sometimes, I think the biggest issue some Sansa stans have with Arya is that Arya didn't just roll over and let someone kill her. That Arya had the audacity to survive for 5 books. It's clear they do admire Arya's skills and traits, so much so that they claim them for Sansa, but they hate that Arya is the one that has them. Some of them have made posts and written metas about how wrong Arya was to try to stop Joffrey from hurting her. That she should have let the stable boy turn her in. Or she should have been happy that the woman took advantage of her.

The fact that Arya is still alive 5 books in and plays a major part in the series annoys the shit out of them because for them, Arya is blocking what they (incorrectly) believe is Sansa's true storyline in the books- Arya's. We've all seen their claims- Arya wasn't the outsider at WF, it was Sansa. Arya and Jon's close relationship was actually about Sansa and Jon. Needle may have been given to Arya but Jon was thinking about Sansa. Arya remembering about learning ruling and leadership from Ned? Empathy for the small folk and sense of justice? That all belongs to Sansa now. How about Arya not wanting to leave the North and trying so hard to go back to WF? No, that was Sansa. It was Arya that wanted to leave the North. Jon forsaking his NW vows to save Arya from Ramsay? That too is about Sansa but I'm a little (ok a LOT) fuzzy on how.

Basically, just replace Arya’s name with Sansa in the books. It would be much easier to claim all this and more for Sansa if Arya wasn't around. If Arya had just done the "nice" thing died in the first book, Sansa would be the only Stark daughter left. The only daughter of the North. The only granddaughter of Hoster Tully. The only sister Bran, Rickon, and Jon. You know, what they already try to claim. I can't even count how many times Sansa stans have told me Sansa has to survive to the end of the series or be Queen of the North or Lady of the WF/RL or marry whomever will be King because Sansa is the daughter of Ned Stark, she's the grandchild of Hoster Tully. And completely ignore the fact that Arya can claim the same, along with two younger brothers that have the same lineage. And while it's not as vocal or repeated as often, you can't ignore that they wish Bran and Rickon would go away as well or they already consider them incapacitated to rule or dead.

It's because of this that I think to some of the Sansa stans, the cruelest thing Arya has ever done to Sansa in the book wasn't throwing a blood orange at a nice dress. It was for just not letting herself be killed.

Day 20: Politics - Aspirations

I found it! I found that stupid quote: “sail a ship across the Sunset Sea”

He might raise castles like Brandon the Builder, or sail a ship across the Sunset Sea, or enter your mother’s Faith and become the High Septon.” But he will never run beside his wolf again, he thought with a sadness too deep for words, or lie with a woman, or hold his own son in his arms.

Apparently Arya seems to find all of these options desirable (even High Septon). Yet D&D have for some strange reason choose the one that she didn’t repeat, the one she didn’t seem to care about.

Just realised in THAT SCENE 

Gendry pulls Arya’s hand to help him undress himself

I’ve still got to write metas for how it gives them both agency, and that y’all reaching. 

“I’m not the red woman. Take your own blood pants off.” 

Arya’s giving him room to make his own decision, to consent to her with his actions. She gives him time to push her away. 

The real problem people have that they don’t want to address is that Arya was an 18-year-old virgin, having agency over her own sexuality, her own virginity, and her own nudity. That that scene wasn’t for the audience. And it wasn’t for Gendry. It was for Arya. Arya’s nudity was for Arya alone. That Maisie was the one who got to decide how much was shown. That Maisie decided on how her body was to be portrayed. That Maisie got the agency in a scene that many actresses never had. Many actresses never will have. 

That Maisie, who’s first sex scene was so uncomfortable for her at 17/18, that she didn’t enjoy making it. That she got to enjoy making this one, having fun with this one, have a hand in crafting it. She was 17/18 being rutted against by a 26-year-old actor in the Falling (released 2014, Maisie born in 1997), and she didn’t enjoy it. I don’t recall the complaints then? Was it because she didn’t get naked? Maybe.

In a show where Dany was raped at 15 (implied and then brutally on screen), Sansa was raped at 17 (on screen), Robb Stark lost his virginity at 16/17 (in a fit of passion parallel to Gendrya), Jon lost his at 17/18? Missandei was a slave, Doreah was said to be 12... Of all our leads this is the one people have a problem with... when y’all still congratulating Pod having such skills when he was coded being 15/16 in s3. Wonderful shit guys. 

And if your problem is with Gendry’s trauma. That’s fine. Although I would say, Arya was not aggressive with it. In fact, Gendry pulls Arya to help him undress. The line of questioning she took was very important for what she wanted. How much experience does he have? Does she need to make it more special for him? Is his only experience the red woman? He implied sexual assault. Arya’s not knowledgable enough to fully understand what that means, but the hint was there in tied me down stripped me, and she made her behaviour appropriate. She forces nothing. If Gendry wanted her to stop asking he would have told her to stop- and she would have stopped. Arya’s not one to treat Gendry like shit. They have banter, he calls her milady. in the books she calls him a STUPID BULLHEADED BASTARD BOY. It’s not so off beat for her to say earlier “Even a smiths apprentice can do better than that.” If it was Jon failing to describe wights she’d say “Even a Man of the Night's watch can do better than that.” She’s called everyone in her life Stupid before. Because Gendry was a smith’s apprentice. She asked if he was with her. That’s medieval for did sex happen. He is quick to say no. He still knows what it was, and I think it’s about here that Arya STARTS to fully come to grips with it. With just what he was telling her. So she changes it up, other women only until comes time she wants to give him a chance to leave again, change his mind. “I’m not the red woman.” She’s not her. This is Arya, and Arya loves Gendry, and she doesn’t want to make him do something he doesn’t want to. 

 It wasn’t even aggressive questioning, it was three lines of questioning. “Was that your first time?” “Your first time with a woman. How many others? One? Two? Twenty?” She gets her answer, he tells her. Three. coincidentally the same amount of times Arya got stabbed by the waif. The same amount of arrowheads she threw. The number of scenes they have in the season where they make love. The season they separated. She gives him time to push her away, to say no, to leave. She would’ve accepted that. She pauses twice to let him to this. Before she kisses him, when she tells him to take his pants off. Her pants are still on then. They can leave now and stop. The sexual assault hasn’t been brushed over from Gendry’s end. He mentioned it in s7, he implied it to Arya now in ep 2. Arya didn’t gloss over it either. I’m not the red woman. 

If we’re giving Arya shit for this, let's give Jon the same shit for approaching the woman who- for the first time ever confessing to being raped- announced to him she had been raped, for... what specifically felt like sex when I watch that. Arya didn’t know until that scene. Jon knew episodes before. Daenerys said as such explicitly. Gendry implied it.  

I actually asked a friend who watched the J*nerys scene and how that felt to watch “ ... weird, and forced. like? the writing leading up to that point didn't make me feel like there was much chemistry between them at all “

Compared to the build-up of Gendrya “ A bit better. There was precedent for it, at least. It's a well-established ship, and the relationship between the two of them was developed enough to the point where it didn't seem like it came out of nowhere”

If the problem’s with Gendry’s age? Y’all didn’t have a problem with Bronn’s age in s8 ep 1 when he started having sex with three gratuitously naked girls young enough to be his daughters, or at least playing his daughters. Gendry’s in his early twenties. People ship Sansa with men twice her age - Jai.me, Tyr.ion, Little.finger, Wil,las Ty.rell. People ship her romantically with Ramsay. The guy who raped her on the show. People ship Da.ny and Dr.ogo when even in the show she’s still some 15 years younger than him, and he raped her. Again, not judging that, ship what you want, but really? That’s the one that’s okay?

It was mutually consensual and desired, touched on Gendry’s trauma with the characters both actively showing this is not the same. “I’m not the Red Woman.” I’m Arya. “Take your own blood pants off.” If you want this to continue, you have to do that. I’m not making you do this, and I’m not forcing your pants off. She wants his consent as much as he has hers. Because we know Melisandre yanked them off. Arya gave him a choice. And he chooses he wants to continue. He undoes his own pants. 

The gravity of the situation? They could die in minutes, in hours, they don’t know, and Arya wants to do this before that happens. Gendry wants to do this. There’s urgency, they need each other, they want each other. She pushes him on the sacks- but he doesn’t leave. He doesn’t at any point stop her. We know he wanted her too, and that he understood that this is arya, and arya likes to be a leader- likes to be in control

Arya undressed herself for her. Not Gendry. Not the audience. Herself. Arya took control because it was her virginity. Not Gendry’s. Her’s. Gendry shouldn’t be the one in charge just because he’s been a victim. Arya needed to be in charge because it was HER VIRGINITY. She needed control over this. And as an 18-year-old virgin, do you know how much that meant for me to see? A virginal woman taking control, and not being demure for the man having her virginity.

In a world where people aren’t as offended by the rape, misogyny and murder in the show... a consensual act between an 18 year old and the guy she likes is too far? 

Where were the cries that Arya’s too young when she was stabbing Meryn Trants eyes out? When the Hound smacked her over?  When she was blinded? When she took out House Frey? When she was beaten? When she was stabbed?

Of course not.

Was dialogue clunky? yes? Could it have been different and better? yes. But I’m happy with what we got. As someone who loves Gendry, and loves Arya, and can differentiate my muse from the writing of the showrunners, and even sometimes the decisions that george makes and continue to love her. 

No complaints about much that Arya does when she’s killing... Because sex is only for the pleasure of men, I forget. If she was a boy, and Gendry a girl, people would be celebrating her. Just like people congratulated Jon for sexing up Dany. 

I’ve seen that too “If the situation was reversed there would be petitions”  who the fuck petitioned for Jon//erys to not happen again? Because that’s what Jon did. He approached the sexual assault survivor Dae..nerys for sex bc uwu they’re in love, and all that was talked about was the incest and boat sex. I don’t remember a criticism of Jon doing that. Guy shows up at your doorstep for sex and he’s in control of it? Gendrya did the opposite. Guy showed up at doorstep probably to confess love, girl takes control of what she wants. 

Anyway tldr: Both characters had agency in this scene. Gendry had the agency to reject Arya’s advances, to stop them, she gave him the chance, he decided he wanted to continue and be naked. Arya had the agency over her sexuality, over her nudity, over her own virginity. Maisie had agency over her nudity, and it was so tastefully shot. Most actresses never get that. 

And you know what? I liked it. I liked it a lot. Shout out to Maisie and Joe for doing so fucken fantastic. Shout out to Bryan Cogman and David Nutter for giving a shit about Maisie’s comfort. Shout out to Bryan Cogman for recognising parts of these characters. The fact it feels straight out of a fanfiction shows the general lovers of Arya, Gendry, and Gendrya felt it was done well. No shout out to Bryan for not giving more tact to the situation of Melisandre. 

And you know what? It was.
