It was October 31st, Halloween night, as the Doctor arrived. It wasn't a holiday he usually got to celebrate. He was too busy saving the planet usually, but this night seemed to be quiet. Ace had told him he could stop by if he wanted to try celebrating it, so he figured he would as landed the TARDIS in her living room.

“Well, this is a surprise,” she said as the door to the larger than she was used to, and yet achingly familiar blue box materialise in the open-plan living area in the penthouse apartment at the top of A Charitable Earth’s tower. She couldn’t help but smile as she watched the door creak open. “I know I said you could visit but in all honesty, I didn’t think you actually would.”

It was a Doctor she wasn’t familiar with but she always knew the Professor when she saw him—them. There was just something so obvious about their presence to Dorothy that she knew who it was — not just the TARDIS.

“Hiya, Professor,” she said with a smile, greeting him properly.

“You were the one who taught me that it was okay to face your fears,” she said, almost without thinking. “Perhaps not always in the best way. Remember the Psychic Circus?” She laughed then. “But it’s also not a bad thing to be afraid of how a thing might occur. It’s a matter of how we respond to that fear and how we can use that fear to get through the terror of it.”

She considered his words and moved over to her desk, pushing a few pieces of paperwork into a neat pile as she did. With a sigh, she looked up at him again. “In your fear, you went and looked back at those you’ve cared for. You didn’t know what was coming so you looked back. I think that’s a good thing,” she added with a light shrug. “Don’t you?”

"I suppose it is," the Doctor told her, "I haven't really thought much about it. For me, it just was what it was." He shrugged slightly. "I think part of it was just being particularly attached to that body, even more than usual. I'm not sure why. I just had vanity issues at the time I suppose. Not like the body I had when I traveled with you. I didn't even have time to think about regeneration when I had that body. It just sort of happened while I was asleep for a surgery."

“It’s nothing you think about often, I guess,” Ace replied. “Or maybe you do because you don’t die, or not like we do.” She shrugged, leaning down on her desk with palms flat on the wooden surface. “Maybe that’s something else for why I do what I do. The charity, I mean. Life is precious, you know?”

concept: doctor who series where a villain appears in the second episode, causes some trouble, is stopped, and the doctor leaves. they're set up so that it seems like they could be a one-off but they could also return. they don't appear again until the next series, in another relatively insignificant episode where it becomes clear that they have some uhhh personal beef with the doctor. the doctor stops them and moves on again, but he's kind of uneasy - because they clearly have beef with something that happened in his future. the villain shows up for a third time in the finale, and the doctor manages to defeat them, but they try to kill the doctor one last time. the doctor has no choice but to kill them in self-defence. as they lie dying, they break down over the trauma of their time with the doctor, and it becomes clear that, whatever happened, they let their grief and anger fester, and chose to blame the doctor rather than process that pain.

in the next series, the doctor picks up a new companion. they're bright, starry-eyed, and want to help the doctor make the universe a better place.

then we hear their name.

Ruby never intentionally made it snow, it wasn’t an alien or godly superpower she’d been born with or had inherited. Whenever Ruby would remember the night that she was left at the Church in the snow whilst the choir sang, that memory would come to life and fall around her. The reason this happened was explained by the Doctor in The Legend of Ruby Sunday, albeit in a blink and you’ll miss it moment that should’ve been written as a realisation, which is that that point in time when Ruby was left at the Church in the snow is so raw and so open in time, and so because time is memory and memory is time, that also means Ruby’s memory of it is open and as a result would be brought to life whenever remembered. The reason it only happened for Ruby is obvious, which is that out of everyone in creation, that point in time is the most important to Ruby, as being found at the Church creates an entire future like Carla fostering and adopting Ruby. It’s also the reason for Ruby’s attachment trauma, meaning it’s a traumatic memory which is extremely powerful, because it’s when she was separated from her birth mum as a newborn. Plus, Ruby would’ve given that memory so much power by how much emotion, attention, and recall she’d give it whenever thinking about that night or something connected to it like who her birth mum and dad is, and any situations that’d trigger abandonment. This is why it had so much power, as power as great as the Gods of the Pantheon, because to every individual, our memory is the most powerful thing ever.

hii :3 what r ur thoughts on ruby sunday in the devils chord ?

for a first trip into history, the devil’s chord is such a good one. ruby literally gets to meet her heroes (which is then echoed in the 15th doctor icons book when she tells the doctor to choose their destination and he chooses to meet shirley jackson: his hero). she’s so excited all the time to meet the beatles and cilla black and it’s so cute to see.

i actually love the fact that even when they start investigating where music has gone, she’s still finding the joy and whimsy out of being at abbey road studios and getting to talk to john lennon.

it’s also such a good episode from a characterisation perspective because we get more hints about her backstory and more mystery with the snow and the song. also, this episode playing around with diegetic and non-diegetic sound was such a neat idea and i love that her own theme was composed by her to help her best friend trudy - a trans lesbian - get through a heartbreak.

honestly what’s not to love about ruby’s story in the devil’s chord!
