The Doctor landed his TARDIS and walked out, unsure where he even landed this time. He looked around and noticed he seemed to be in London and there was a blond haired woman staring right at him as if she knew him. "Hello," the Doctor smiled and waved at her. "I'm the Doctor. What's your name?"

To say Ruby was surprised was, quite frankly, an understatement. It was simply that she had not expected to see that box, let alone hear those three words, for a while yet. Sure, he had said he would see her again but she hadn’t banked on it being yet. But the main cause of her surprise was that the man who had exited the box and spoken the words to her was not the man she knew.

That day had started just like any other, she had woken up, done her errands, clocked in at UNIT to see what everyone was up to (sometimes it resulted in a briefing about an incursion, other times it was simply good to see the others) and then taught her piano classes in the evening. Life really was that mundane after all of the chaos she had seen on board the TARDIS.

Now, standing in front of the TARDIS and facing a man she didn’t recognise, and seemingly didn’t recognise her, she wondered what on earth she was meant to say.

You know my name. I’m Ruby.

It’s been a year.

What are you doing here, Doctor?

When is it for you?

“Hi,” was all she said in the end. “My name is Ruby.”

Funny how she was so trusting of this stranger who claimed to be the Doctor, she thought to herself. He could be anyone. Except something told her, deep down, that this was the Doctor. Maybe it was instinct or maybe she just felt like she knew her best friend well enough. She was aware of the fact that he could change his face, after all. Vaguely. But her Doctor had said he didn’t plan on changing it anytime soon, that it only happened when a Time Lord wanted to hide or if they… the Doctor wouldn’t have died in the year since she saw him last, would he?

“Are you the Doctor from when he knows me?” She blurted out and then cursed silently. She stepped forward, closer towards him. “I mean— I mean, that came out wrong. Are you the Doctor who saved me from goblins last Christmas? Or the one I met the Beatles with over the summer? Is that too… spoiler-y to say, or?”

She was blabbering and she knew it. She slammed her mouth shut and stepped back, shaking her head in silent annoyance at her own self. If this was a Doctor who didn’t know her yet, she couldn’t make him think she was mad. What if that changed the future? What if she caused him never to meet her? What would happen to her past and his future if that happened? She shook her head again, forcing her rambling mind to shut up and focused on the man in front of her again. He wore a tweed jacket and a bow tie. He looked smart, like he had just walked out of a Victorian novel or something. He looked academic and yet he was young. His outfit seemed to her to make him seem so much older than he appeared, which, she supposed, he was.

This was good, these observations. It was grounding her.

She gave him a smile.
