I need to say a thing about my identity as a Mom.  First of all, I had a wonderful time in Detroit and at #FacingRace but I would be lying if I didn’t need to fight off the idea that I was being self-indulgent for leaving my kids at home and doing something that feeds me and the work I do.  Mama guilt is real but there were a few things that allowed me to shelve that for just a little bit and I’d like to shout them out here.

I appreciate the intentionality of Facing Race for making sure there were #MamaPods to pump or breastfeed in, because I’ve been at too many conferences and other gatherings where the response I get to “Where can I pump?” is answered with a puzzled look and “the bathroom is around the corner”.  Once, I even killed my car battery while pumping when there was nowhere else! I want to shout out all the mamas who dragged their trusty pump back and forth from their hotel to the conference center, struggled to clean parts and keep milk cold, timing pumps around the dope breakout sessions and keynotes. Shout out to the partners and family who stayed with babes at home so we could be here.  I want to shout out the AMAZING parents who brought their littles with them!  To the mamas breastfeeding while having conversations about progressive ideas, planning the resistance, and building independent political power for their community.  To the parents who made sure their littles were exposed to the world as it should be, one tiny freedom fighter at a time in strollers and carriers.  Shout out to the very sweet coat-check staff for handing me my pump a million times so I didn’t have to drag it around with me all day.  Shout out to the kind TSA agent who gave me props on how much I’d pumped while running her gloved hands over everything.  You are my heros!  The world I want to live in celebrates that we all have multiple identities and that we are all growing our families in different ways and that it should be seen as an asset and not hold us back from investing in our leadership. 

And also, I’m fucking tired and ready for some baby snuggles.
