Long-term preservation of fungal mycelia is often constrained by the limited availability of sufficient quantities of high-quality fungal biomass, such as fine mycelial fragments and/or spores. This limitation persists despite the widespread availability of room-temperature preservation methods (e.g., the Castellani method) and −20°C storage facilities in standard laboratory freezers used by most mushroom laboratories.
This bottleneck can be overcome by producing fungal biomass through Liquid Culture Technology. The Liquid Culture Technology (see below) yields abundant, healthy mycelial biomass that can be harvested and divided into multiple aliquots for simultaneous preservation using different long-term storage methods. By adopting liquid culture technology, mushroom and fungal laboratories can reliably generate sufficient biomass for preservation, thereby ensuring robust, reproducible, and long-term maintenance of valuable fungal cultures.
