nadia noticed the person standing near her, but hadn’t given them any attention with the hope that they’d go away. she didn’t want to talk to anyone at the moment, but they seemed determined to get her attention. “ unless you’re here to tell me that there is free food somewhere, i suggest you come back later, ” she said softly, only turning to look at them once she’d finished her sentence.

“Ah-- I’m sorry,” she apologized, stepping back from the girl. She didn’t even realize that she wanted to be alone. “I-- I just was going to ask if you had a charger for my phone.” She held it up, although, it was practically useless, all she used it for was to listen to music.

milo looked up from the book he was reading. he’d been doing a lot of reading since arriving on earth, it was one of the only things that made him feel normal. the complete change of environment, people, and species threw the boy for a complete loop, and he was struggling to find himself again. books were the only real comfort he had, and he wasn’t thrilled that someone had come up to him and interrupted his flow. “ um, hello… d’you need something from me? ”

She didn’t mean to startle him, or interrupt him, or anything of that nature. But, it looked fairly suspicious that she simply stopped in front of the kid. All Aiko was trying to do was catch a glimpse of what he was reading, though her social cues were pretty fairly lacking. “Oh! Uh. Sorry. I just wanted to know what you were reading without bothering you, but--... clearly, it didn’t work! I’ll just be on my way!”

“dream all you like, aiko. i don’t sob. i may shed a tear for you though. no one will ever compliment my hair like you do…” the boy laughed, as he laid on her bed. “yup, probably. i need to learn how to cook so i can at least contribute.”

“You’re laaaaame,” she whined, with a fake pout, before laughing, and folding her arms. “Wow, you? Learning how to cook? Royalty, they’re just like us!”

“ yeah, i had a really bad accident as a kid & my eyes were a little horrid to look at - or so i was told. but they’re fine now seeing as they’re pretty & glass. ” talking about how ze lost zir sight wasn’t something avery was quite often, but ze would definitely answer any & all questions about zirs loss of sight. “ wings, yeah i do. i also am omnilingual but i only speak english, korean, & then animals languages too. it’s how i got around back home. —-your life sounds good too you know. i have a big family & sometimes it;’s a little overwhelming especially with the clashing personalities. uh, i like to talk to animals & i like to swim too. i like reading a lot too or listening to books anyways. what about you? you said you were into music right? ”

The explanation as to why ze had glass eyes made Aiko ache with sympathy, though, she wasn’t sure if ze would appreciate that. She knew how sympathy could get irritating, especially the kind she received from colleagues of her father’s, upon hearing her mother had forgotten so much. It felt completely fake. “I think your eyes would have been pretty either way, horrid or not,” was all she said. “But, I’m sure you’re not really up to talking about it, so I’m gonna change the subject, thanks for humoring my nosiness.” That was a joke, an attempt to lighten the mood. “Omnilingual? Holy hell, you’re a superhero. I know a little bit of Japanese, and that’s an exaggeration. I mean, I have my great aunt, and she’s pretty cool. Animals? Like... dogs? You can talk to dogs? Oh my God. And books are cool! I don’t think my attention span is long enough to actually get through them, but I like them,” she laughed at this, considering the last time she read a chapter book was probably the sixth grade, and all the other times, she simply found a plot synopsis and read that. “Yes! Yeah. Uh, I like rock music...? Some Earth bands are pretty cool. I like the Talking Heads, David Bowie, and such, but also I’m discovering a lot more music here. I wanna start a band, though. I just don’t know anybody in order to do it.”

she’d been studying the routes to and from the dorms for the university and academy for the past two weeks. she may not have asked for the job but she wasn’t going to complain or say no. she’d always do something to the best of her abilities, right now it was helping a girl get to her room. “ i wouldn’t m-mind taking you, w-what’s the dorm number?? are you a-at the university or?? ” she gave aiko as much of a smile as she could as she tightened her grip on her bag.

She looked at the girl, and nodded, a smile on her face. “Yep! The university,” she told the other girl, before her face contorted into one of thought. “Um... hold on, lemme check,” she told the helpful stranger, before studying the sheet of paper. “Uh, can you look at this? I don’t really understand.”

“i don’t sob, aiko. you know that. but i’ll order someone to do it for me, no worries.” max hummed, completely serious. “don’t worry, the food court is way better than the royal court. we should really have one back home in fantasia.. the foods from all the regions in one square. that would be heaven.”

“I know that, but that doesn’t mean I can dream. You’ll definitely sob,” she retorted, with a laugh, although she knew he was being serious. “Maybe... maybe they do have one somewhere. Probably with all those peasants.”

“honestly, i have no idea how the way genetics work when there’s some fairy shit involved, her mom’s a fairy and her dad’s not, so yeah i guess half. i’d probably end up killing the plants with my powers if they backfired or something, i can’t even look after plants as a human, so.”

“then i’d like to speak at your funeral, and in your honor, i’ll write you a song about the ever changing colors of your hair.” max laughed, ignoring his friend’s request to move slower, moving faster even until they reached the front of her room. “here we are.” he beamed, placing her bags on the ground. “we can go to the food court, which surprisingly isn’t anything like a royal court. you’ll see.”

“I’m sure you could rework an old song, because your lyric writing skills are most definitely lacking. But, I do request you throw your body over my casket with dramatic sobbing. Maybe perform a soliloquy about the first time we met and I told you I liked your hair,” she said, trotting a bit faster to keep pace with him. She looked over at the door holding her new room. “Wow, gorgeous,” she joked. “Really? I couldn’t tell. But, to be fair, I’m not too into the royal court.”

with zirs eyes shut, ze tried hard to imagine the girl. she looked interesting from what ze could build up in zirs little imagination. “ you’re pretty you know– ” giving out compliments just out of random & like this, was a little awkward for avery, but ze didn’t know what else to say to her description. ze was overjoyed. “ my hair is a light orange still. i have glass eyes that’s like silver & green-ish so i don’t have to wear glasses all the time. hm, what else. back home i have wings, big wings that make me look a lot taller rather than 5′6″. what else is there really? ” avery took a moment to think about all the information she gave zir so ze could match up to it. “ i have three parents? i have a biological mom & then two step-like parents; a boy & a girl. then i have a biological sister & two step-siblings. i like to think we get along well, but i get along best with my sister. ”

The compliment made her smile, as she wondered what she looked like in zir mind. It always interested her, how perspectives definitely changed in everyone. “Glass eyes? Really?” She asked, looking at zir, studying zir face. “That’s so cool. Wings? Really? Oh, my God, you’re the coolest person I’ve ever met.” She listened intently, her head tilting slightly as she did. “I swear, you have the most interesting life. It’s just me, my dad, and my sister, and I love my sister, but she’s a lot older than me, and we don’t always agree on the same things.” She tried to push the thoughts of her mom from her mind, because it wasn’t a topic she very much enjoyed. “What do you like to do, Avery?”

“it was a shame i missed it, then again, being one of the few adults is not fun – i hope she had fun though. i’m twenty six, sadly, i’d much rather be younger but alas.”

“ i’m not too sure i want to be buying you ice cream any time soon. ” there was a certain amount of sarcasm & bait that elliot could take before he would get irritated with people. now aiko? she was walking on the fence. “ joke all you want. being cryptic is stupid when it’s in daylight while we’re walking to get food. ” shaking his head, elliot  continued on. “ i like the ice cream here a little too much; so no, just you will find out. ”

She shrugged, and decided to simply drop the topic, before looking over at him. “Then, I’ll pay, I don’t mind,” she said, simply before looking forward, a pathetic attempt to memorize the area. “Huh. So how often do you eat the ice cream here? What’s your favorite flavor?”
