Memorial planned to honor 6 brothers who died in the Civil War
The six Littleton brothers — Thomas, William, George, John, Kendall and Noah — left their Toolesboro [Louisa County, Iowa] home, and all died while serving with Union forces between 1862-63.
According to researchers with the Louisa County Historical Society, their deaths likely represent the largest single loss of life in any immediate family in any U.S. war. The researchers also discovered the men were mixed race, although all served in white units.
The proposal for the memorial includes erecting a nine-foot stele, or an upright stone, of Mesabi black granite on a two-foot pedestal of Barre gray granite in a circular plaza surrounded by native Iowa vegetation on county-owned ground in Toolesboro, about eight miles south of Wapello on County Highway 99.
The monument, which was designed by Will Tomson, Iowa City, will be inscribed with a story of the brothers and their names. Six oak trees, each representing one the brothers, will be planted on the site.
The fundraising goal for the project is $250,000. Send your donation to:
