some characters just need to run away from their current circumstances and survive (just barely) on the streets or in the wilderness for a while, you know? i don't think it's necessarily the most efficient path to healing and it's certainly not the least painful/traumatic one but sometimes a character has been so stripped of agency and you just want to see them run away and forcibly shift their genre to survival thriller......

this + living weapon being incredibly attuned to handler's body language. a synchronicity no one else can match, seeming almost to read their mind.

realising handler can convey complex instructions to their weapon without any signals that outsiders can parse. realising they can give a verbal order but nix or modify it in a hundred ways nonverbally. weapon's potential allies wondering how much of this could be a long game, whether handler's already given the execution order. or handler's peers/superiors getting suspicious. wh. why do you need to be so sneaky. what are you telling it that you don't want us seeing?

love it when whumpers have it bad. they spend the day hurting whumpee and calling them names and then they get home and get hurt worse while getting called worse names. yes actually whumper is a failure and a disappointment and needs to learn their lessons and they will Obviously relieve their anger on whumpee.

my fave things to see in whump fics:

A character begging for mercy from one of their friends/allies because they can't comprehend that they've been rescued yet

The whumpee hallucinating one of their friends as someone they're really angsty about (a parent, an ex-lover, a dead friend, etc.) and spilling all their secrets in a confession that they just need to get out

Truth serum/spells where the whumpee is spouting the most insane self-loathing BS ever and is able to do so because they see that as the genuine, actual truth

Whumper finding out that the whumpee they've been attacking is just a child/teen (bonus points if the whumper has kids of their own)

Switching POVs between the whumpee and caretaker where the whumpee is confused by all the kindness they're receiving and the caretaker is like, struggling to keep calm because how has no one been gentle with you yet??

Something that follows the same vein as the previous one but the caretaker being like "When's the last time anyone's done this for you?" and being met with silence and realizing that the whumpee has just never been cared for

Whumpee with a high pain tolerance doing their best to stifle their reactions because they're actually feeling what hurt them this time (bonus points if the whumpee is like, a strong silent type)

Passing out from crying induced exhaustion

Characters who hide their emotions being forced to express them, either from something designed specifically to do that or as a result of lowered inhibitions after being drugged

Having a nightmare with someone next to them or in the same room, but having it be a quiet kind where the only thing that tells you they're distressed is a change in breathing, their expression, or silent crying

Whumpee refusing care because they think they don't deserve it

My first instinct was, "First of all, I'm on probation, so technically I'm owned by the state." Here's some actual responses, though:

"Gonna sell me off, then? If I'm that much of a hot commodity?"

"You don't even own this apartment. Fuck off."

One whumpy dynamic/scenario I adore is when character A (in a long-term tough spot) takes character B (in pressing but temporary need) into their home to look after them/shelter them/nurse them back to health, and character B is looking around from their sickbed like "damn bro you live like this?"

bonus points if Character A would never ever have trusted anyone with the location of their home if it wasn't an emergency, and if it wasn't Them.

hidden injury is great, but a subversion that gives me so many whumperflies is when Whumpee is injured, it's a bad injury, and the team knows this. but they can't stop. they've got a mission to complete, they have to keep moving, they can't be spotted, et cetera. the brawn supports whumpee's weight, the medic is tracking their vitals with quick glances and questions, the leader is forging onward to get to safety as soon as possible. all while Whumpee doesn't hide the pain, but takes it with grim determination. they have to keep going. they have to. they will.

Some basic things to consider when writing the aftermath of a (sudden) fight.

Your character over the next few hours or days will find new marks, wounds, etc they didn't know they had due to adrenaline blocking out the actual moment. They may not realize/remember where they've been struck.

Your character may struggle to recall the fight or what they did during the fight due to adrenaline, again.

The emotional turmoil is usually much more prevalent/important right after the fight and the hours afterward than the actual physical aspect of what happened. Is your character feeling scared, enraged, betrayed, satisfied, bloodthirsty, vindicated? Adrenaline can bring out some pretty raw and intense displays of emotion, even in someone who doesn't often show emotion. It can make someone's mask break and their bottled frustrations spill over.

The extent of the pain and injuries may not settle/become apparent until the next day. The second and third day post-fight is often the worst for aching and pain. They'll have difficulty moving and be incredibly slowed down/limited. Of course, this depends on the severity of the fight and the injuries received. Someone who was punched twice in the head and once in the arm will feel differently from someone who was slammed into the floor.

Continuing off the last point, how does your character feel about their injuries now that the adrenaline has worn off and they can think about them/feel them clearly? Do they hate looking at them or are they constantly prodding at the injuries and looking them over? How do they feel about the fight in general and what is their perspective about it since the intense, immediate emotion has tapered off?

Do not underestimate how long injuries can/will last. A lump/bruise can last for over a month, and physical pain from said bruise can last for over a week. Keep in mind that the type of physical pain even for the same injury will change over time. Of course this can vary if your character has a naturally quicker or slower healing process.

Of course, with all writing advice, take your story/scene and characters into consideration before/when using it! The fight between a character who is a professional boxer and fighting another professional will differ from somebody who got into a petty fist-fight with their friend or a stranger. This advice was made with spontaneous fights in mind like the latter example.

pulling a gun on them when words don’t do the trick,

shoving the gun’s muzzle against their lips to shut them up,

the steady pressure of the muzzle on their skin as a reminder not to say or do anything stupid,
