GD x Kiko Relationship Why Korean Fans Cannot Accept
I read about GD and Kiko’s relationship recently, and saw many people disregarding Korean’s culture and bashing on Korean fans. But as a Korean I have something to say. Fans from outside countries may think Korean fans are overreacting (and overreacts in general) and too sensitive, when they are the positive ones who support GD and Kiko relationship. I will put it in a brief sentences, the two contrasting view: Fans outside of Korea believes that fans should be happy for GD and even as well as Kiko because they are both happy. Therefore they accept this relationship. Korean fans believe that they cannot accept this relationship not because of the fact that GD is simply dating, but because GD is dating Kiko.
I lived almost eleven years in Korea surrounded by its culture and its people. And I learned from those people and the majority’s perspective and their worldview. If you did not know, Korea went through severe mistreatment and discrimination when Japan took the power of Korea long time ago. They banned Koreans from speaking their languages and writing them, and replaced the schools with Japanese schools. They also made Korean girls sex slaves then tortured them until they declared that ‘Korea is Japan’s.’ Thousands of people were killed and very badly tortured, and we, Koreans learn this even from a very young age.
Therefore, we naturally come to grow hatred of Japan in some way- and Japan also grew hatred towards us in someway. The conflicts between two countries has the connection to this GD and Kiko’s dating.
As a Korean GD fan, I do not know if I support either side. However I know this: Koreans fans knows that Kiko is U-ik (groups of Japanese people who support the control and power Japan had over Korea, even if it means torture), and also owns a dark past. The photos of evidence proved to them that Kiko was a pretty girl, but was too much ‘free’ and fearless.
In most other countries, having confidence and showing one’s true opinion is considered important. But in Korea we believe that some things have to be kept inside our mind and too much confidence is disrespectful, especially if you are a celebrity or a singer.
Koreans fans knows the fact that the public will judge idols and singers- that is the nature of becoming an idol. Therefore, they worry about the image of their idol being spoiled.
The public in Korea does not know who GD is deeply. They think of him as: a famous rapper who’s good looking. They do not know him more deeply than the fans do. Therefore any slight rumors and events, people that gives him bad looks may turn their whole perspective around.
This is why fans worry, or cannot accept GD and Kiko relationship because they know that when they date, bad consequences will be in front of them, and may eventually even lead to a bad perspective of the group, BIGBANG.
A group being influenced by just one person is just sad in my opinion. Groups are groups because they are connected and things that they do may create a whole different impact on the group members.
Most Koreans believe U-ik is bad, because they were taught that way for generations, and some of them even heard of their older generations passing down tragic stories.
That is why the public will judge Kiko so hard and come to believe that GD is also ‘bad’, because they do not know that GD is a someone who has capability to pick someone he loves.
However the fans consider Korean fans this way:
They are so emotional, why don’t they think of the positive side, they hate everything when their idols date like they lost their boyfriend, and etc.
We are not only negative. We do not hate everything when our idols date. We do not feel like we are losing our boyfriend.
Reading comments like those crashed my mind because I knew people who commented this were disrespecting and were being unacceptable of Korean’s culture.
Here is a brief reasons:
- Why do Koreans so sensitive on what idol go through, even the dating rumors?
Because from young age, they were taught to be careful and their mind were shaped to be that way because that’s just the way Korean culture is.
- Why are Korean fans always negative?
Because they were taught from young age that ‘you grow as you go through hardships’ than ‘explore freely and express yourself, do things you want.’
So therefore the final reason comes to this: IT IS JUST A CULTURAL DIFFERENCE.
Korean people lives in a different environment. They learn in different way. They face different worldview. They are taught differently. They experience different things. Their perspective naturally shapes from the elements that surrounds them.
The only reason I can say for any conflict in Internet, or even in face to face is this: We all have different world views, perspectives, thoughts and point of view from our own personal experience and things that were around us when we were young.
Is Koreans being negative wrong? Or even bad?
No, it’s not. It is just the way they shaped themselves, without their own realization.
Whenever you are saying ‘Koreans fans are this and that’ I have to tell you you are simply disrespecting our culture and being center minded, stereotypical, and unable to see the things beyond your own view.
There are different types of people in the world, so conflicts and differences in opinions are natural. I just wanted to say that Korean fans are not ‘wrong’ or ‘bad’ or ‘weird’ or ‘negative’.
I just wanted to really say that, although majority of people on internet simply argues that their perspective is right. There is no right or wrong when it comes to perspectives and opinions.
I would explain more, talk more, to make all other questions that are related to ‘but I am right because you are wrong’, but I hope this long paragraphs helped your understanding why Korean fans are the way they are.
