see thats an apt comparison. however unlike doctor who, where regeneration is not only explicitly explained its also treated as so important it gets entire episodes dedicated to it, there is absolutely no explanation for why columbos entire appearance and personality changes. the old actor gets no sendoff. the new actor doesnt even get announced in advance, they just shows up 30 min into the first ep of the new season and gets immediately mistaken for a civilian
