Final

For my final art piece, I decided to take inspiration from our “Viewing Art” piece, where we drew inspiration from an album cover of our choice. For this piece, I used the album cover of Zach Bryan’s “The Great American Bar Scene”. I used a picture from my freshman year of my friends and me in my freshman dorm room. As I graduate in a week, I often find myself reminiscing of this time. I decided to use this picture because Zach Bryan's album cover has vintage photos as the main point of focus. This was my take on "vintage".

With this final art piece, I decided to mash the “Viewing Art” style with “Cubism”. I used Cubism in this piece by sporadically adding shapes throughout the piece. I like to think of it as the randomness of university life clashing with the wholesome moments.

Puppetry

For this assignment, I used an old beer can, cut up pizza box for the arms and some broken plastic for Charles’ legs. He loves to dance to Assumptions by Sam Gellaitry.

PUPPETRY

For my puppet, Evil Ethan, I decided to use an old shoe box and make an evil character. Defined by it’s red eyes and razor sharp teeth, my character decided to rock to XXXTENTACION’s loud song, “Schizophrenia”. I believe the song complimented my character well as it includes yelling and rough back tones.

For my project, I grew inspiration from the traditional Japanese flip-flop, the geta. Using cardboard, from recycled Amazon packages, I made a mixture of modern slides and the geta. My brother, who is a bit heavier than these shoes could handle, used the runway to model this fashionable shoe.

FUTURISM

For my Futurism assignment, I focused on the newest part of the exoskeleton. Designed for those unable to fully walk or run on their own, the exoskeleton helps the lower limbs function. Using artificial intelligence, the exoskeleton is able to mimic a person's walk or run and help function the limbs into that process. The exoskeleton will allow all to walk and run!

For my piece, I started with triangles, circles, squares, and trapezoids. Next, I moved into more irregular shapes, which I used brown and blue to make. I then used the mouth and eyes from a model in a magazine, and the small brown ears from a cow. I finished it off with using the text of a New York magazine.

For my take on fauvism, I decided to have my roommate, Matthew, as my muse. Matt radiates an earthing energy. As a very laid-back person, Matt can be described as a very mellow friend. Someone who is always down to sit back and enjoy some quality time with his friends. For the colors, I decided to use earth tones. Including many greens, browns, and blues to describe his easy-going personality. However, I also decided to use a pop of bright pink as Matt sometimes gets bursts of energy. While with a chill sense of life, Matt loves to have fun and can incite an exciting environment.

For my Impressionist piece, I decided to recreate a picture of my friend Olivia running in a cross-country race. Her drive to run and improve every day is very motivating for me. While my piece ended up with harsher and more brash lines, which is not a very impressionist take, I think I best showed what impressionism is within her hair. The intersecting lines and movement within the ponytail show a free-flowing action and less of a harsh intepretation.

ARTH-102 MIDTERM:

For my midterm, I decided to focus on a highly edited photo of Lindsey Lohan. My two main focuses in this piece were how the edited image depicts her skin and eyes. Lohan's photo has been edited so that her skin has zero imperfections and for the whiteness of her eyes to pop, which in turn enhances the blue coloring of her eyes.

Growing up, I struggled with my skin. I often got painful and easily noticeable acne across my face, which became one of my biggest insecurities. Looking at media, you never really see actors or actresses dealing with an acne breakout, sometimes because of photoshopped pictures like this one. Lindsey Lohan, here, has had a blurring effect added to the picture that makes her skin look flawless, lacking any "imperfection". Highly edited characteristics in photos make impressionable viewers self-reflect on how they might compare to the celebrities, which often harms their own self-image.

In my artistic impression, I decided to use a tissue for not only smoothing her skin but also her black shirt and the alarming red background that I added. I also decided to use Sharpies and a magazine cutting to add emphasis on her eyes, which in the photoshopped image is made to pop out to the viewer.

Assignment #3: CURATOR. For my piece, I took inspiration from Max and Molly. I thought that Molly’s neutral tones from her trees and Max’s clashing tones from his centerpiece and article clippings would clash excitingly. I like to think of my piece as finding a rare flower in a forest of grey.

"Folklore" by Taylor Swift is an album that changed Taylor as an artist. Rather than her classic pop or country, this album focuses more on story and lyrics in a much slower pace. My favorite song from this album is "betty." Which tells the story about a high school couple that cheated on each other during a so called "summer fling." James, the name of the character who cheated on Betty is regretting his decisions. When reflecting about this album cover, I think the timing and context is important. Taylor wrote this album during COVID, where she was isolated and distant (like everyone else in the world). In her other album covers before this, there is a silhouette close up of Taylor's face, where this one she is much farther back. I believe this is because she was telling her own stories in her other albums, where in Folklore she experimented with telling the stories of characters that she imagined. With my interpretation, I added a magazine clipping of a lake into the forest, because of the ending track of the album "the lakes." I also turned the detailed image of Taylor facing front, so a silhouette of a girl facing backwards. This girl could be interpreted as Taylor, but could also represent Betty. I added the names of the songs in the album to the cover because while this girl journeys through the forest, she will encounter the songs in this album. By having her face backward, she is reflecting on the stories and looking towards the next albums Taylor is creating. I used colored pencils, and multipled types of markers to attempt shadowing and texture.

Viewing Art

I chose the album Fields by Junip. I have always loved the music on this album but I have been just as intrigued by the album cover. The art is very geometric so I used sharpies to draw some of the angular areas of this cover. I found a lot of cool images in an old Thrasher magazine to add the divine aspect of this piece.

For assignment 2 I used yellow and purple as my complimentary color pair. To make the background I just drew yellow lines at random as I listened to music I was listening to and filled in the blanks in between with purple. There wasn’t much rhyme or reason to it but it was fun to make. For my outfit I went with the theme of using cutouts from forest pictures to build the base along with a few pieces of fabric and feathers to add some highlights. I think a lot of this idea came from the fact that I miss seeing green trees forests amidst one of the roughest winters in a while. Spring cannot come any sooner. I added the koala because I thought it was cute and also it was the perfect size for the outfit I made. I gave the outfit hiking boots and drew in mittens because I felt those fit in with the outdoorsy part of the outfit.

I really liked here how Colin used his background. I interpreted as the background kind of bursting from the main image and outfit, which was a really cool touch!

For the second assignment I decided to use the complimentary colors of yellow and purple. I used oil pastels with water and a paint brush to spread the colors across the page for a more watery look. I found Jerry’s head and gave him a cactus body with kitten paws, a leaf as a jacket and added some antlers as an accessory

I really liked how Bridget incorporated the antlers as a headpiece. I think it was a great addition to tie in the whole earth tones style!

For my image, I got my clippings from an Enchanted Mountains magazine from Cattaraugus County, NY. All of the clippings have something to do with our local area. The tire in the middle came from a tire swing at The Haunted Hinsdale House, the waffle and cabbage came from local restaurants and markets, the street signs were taken out of a picture from the local Amish area, and the alpaca neck, arms, and legs came from the Alpaca farm in Ellicottville. For my background, I combined shades of Orange and Blue in curving dimensions.

For my art piece #1, “All Great Artists Steal”, I decided to focus on the Ye album by Kanye West. The album cover itself has multiple tones of blue with a bright green saying on the front, juxtaposing the blues. For my take, I decided to focus more on the state of New York to make the cover pop. I included clipping from the Enchanted Mountains magazine of Cattaraugus County, NY. I also drew in some iconic New York features such as the Empire State Building and Niagara Falls. To finish it off, I made the main focus of the art piece, New York’s iconic saying, “I❤️NY”.
