“Really? You should let me make you a cup- most people don’t even realize how much they like tea until they try it. It’s a bit of an acquired taste to some too, but it’s worth acquiring, in my opinion.”
“I think it’s possible to fall in love at first sight, or after years- it all depends on the person and how strong the connection is.” She was hardly surprised by this confession- since meeting Jared her brother had changed a lot, though quite subtly and perhaps only truly noticeably by herself. She held onto him tightly, sensing his frustration. “Yeah?”
“Where’s the pretty girl?” Ainsley couldn’t help but shoot back before a smirk came onto her lips. “What do you want to drink?”
Ainsley had witnessed this whole exchange with the cop, of course- she couldn’t help observing and being a little nosy. But to meet the legendary man who’d gotten away from the officer now was even more interesting. “It’s true- although I lie less than I deflect, I think. People ask my name, I ask them a question about themselves- humans love to talk about themselves, so it’s a lot easier to avoid giving up any information than it sounds.”
“Nice to meet you ‘Drunk,’ I’m Ainsley.” The brunette looked amused as she turned in her seat at the bar to look at the blonde full on. “Is that a family name or did your parents just want something really original?”
“Oh, I am.”
“I could probably rock some plums,” she then replied very seriously, though she was unable the stop the smile that betrayed her teasing. “Guess you do. I sure wish my landlord could accept free tea as payment, then I’d be good. Oh, really? You flatter me.” She let out a cheery giggle.
“I certainly can’t complain that it’s a pretty woman approaching me rather than a crackhead trying to get some money,” Ainsley said easily. “If you’re interested, I actually work at a tea shop. You can get your dose of caffeine and it’s cuter than your generic Starbucks- it’s up to you, of course.”
“You’ll need an ascot,” she reminded him, her lips twitching as she tried to restrain her amusement. “I suppose there was... some method to the madness.” She chuckled at that. “Unless your landlord likes treats over money, no, not really. I don’t really know who I’d most be like from the gang, in all honesty.”
“Understandable.” She tilted her head slightly before replying, “Chai tea is my preference, but I like a good tisane here and there.”
“We can’t put love in some kind of time range! It happens whenever it happens.” She grinned at her brother before enveloping him in a hug. “You’re so cute, Ki. And Jared totally knows it. Which is why he can’t possibly turn you down.”
"I see you take a lot of pride in them," she mused. "I guess I have a lot in common with your kids, in that aspect." Her smirk widened a fraction of a centimeter at his cheeky reply. "Would you now?" She licked her lower lip before offering her next response. "I prefer tea."
“Maybe if there was more encouragement from their coach about the abilities they already have they wouldn’t need to go the extra mile and could focus better on the game.” His fake laugh blew right past her, and she was unfazed. “There are plenty of incentives that work for kids, not just being hard on them.” She smirked at the last remark, however, her eyes twinkling in caustic amusement. “I’m about as sweet as black coffee.”
“Good.” She smiled softly. “Hey- if he leaves you over caring too much, he was never worth having in the first place. And I believe he cares about you just as much as you care about him.”
“Normally you’d be right but- it’s literally free. No strings attached.” She was hardly phased- people rejected fliers all the time, but she couldn’t herself understand why anyone wouldn’t want free tea. “If you insist.”
