American Airlines in Chicago starts 787 service to Japan
American Airlines on Tuesday operated its first flight to Japan from O'Hare Airport with a customer-pleasing Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The 1:20 p.m. flight marked the return of American's daily service to Narita International Airport near Tokyo. It previously operated flights five days a week on the route from Chicago.
American broke in its first 787s on domestic routes, including one to O'Hare, before putting them on international routes, where the fuel-efficient, long-flying planes are more economical. The composite-structure planes allow airlines to be more profitable and serve new city pairs with a smaller plane than a jumbo jet.
For passengers in the cabin, twin-aisle Dreamliners offer larger, dimmable windows, and the ability to adjust cabin pressure and humidity to more comfortable levels than in metal planes. Airlines that already use the jet have said customers highly rate the 787.
While the 787 is a big deal for American, United Airlines has flown the model since 2012. United does not use the 787 on a regular O'Hare route, although some foreign airlines do.
American also uses Dreamliners on Dallas routes, to Beijing, Shanghai and Buenos Aires, Argentina. It had previously used a Boeing 777 on the Chicago-to-Tokyo route.
American expects to take delivery of 13 Dreamliners this year, part of an order of 42, with the right to acquire 58 more. So far it has taken delivery of eight.
American's Dreamliner, a 787-8, is arranged in a two-class cabin and has 28 lie-flat business-class seats. The main cabin has 48 extra-legroom seats and 150 coach seats.
Each seat has an entertainment screen, 15.4-inch screens in business class and 9-inch screens in the back of the plane. Seats throughout the plane have power outlets and USB jacks.
The plane is equipped with satellite Wi-Fi and a walk-up bar with snacks and drinks in the premium cabin.
American on Tuesday also announced it would partner with Cuba Travel Services to operate charter flights between Los Angeles International Airport and Jose Marti International Airport in Havana on Dec. 12. American will also operate a Saturday flight between Miami International Airport and Havana. Both will be sold by Cuba Travel Services.
This year, American will operate about 1,200 charter flights to Cuba, which it says is more than any other airline.
South African Airways Launches Direct Flight From Accra to Washington
South African Airways (SAA) has launched a new direct flight from Accra to Washington DC beginning August 3, 2015.
The flights from Accra to Washington DC will be offered four times a week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The Washington-Accra flight will be the only nonstop flight between Washington D.C. and Ghana. Mrs Dzifa Attivor, Minister of Transport, who launched the flight on Friday, said it was a manifestation of the dream of past African Leaders to bring Africans together. It was also in line with Government’s policy objective of making Ghana the aviation hub in the West African Sub region. The essence, she said, was to ensure an easy and flexible travel opportunity to customers and gave the assurance that Ghana will continue to provide the enabling environment for the operation of air travel for all airline operators. “SAA’s decision to route some of its North American-bound flights to Ghana, was based on sound business principles, as there was considerable demand for passengers to fly from Ghana to the US”, said Dr. John Thambi, a representative of SAA. He said the Airline had the best safety record on the continent and the new flight was the beginning of the efforts to interconnect African countries to make flights in Africa more flexible. Dr. Thambi said the flight, through the operations of the SAA would not only help its passengers to get a direct transport to America but also create employment and share expertise to help its counterparts, the African World Airlines, to become one of the best airline operators. He added that it would help create further economic cooperation for the benefit of the two countries and thanked the Government of Ghana for the opportunity to fly SAA from Accra to Washington DC.
The South African High Commissioner to Ghana, Ms. Lulama Xingwana, Nii Kpobi Tetteh Tsru – the La Mantse, Ms. Hannah Tetteh – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Nana Oye Lithur, Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister as well as Samuel Osei Kuffour, former Black Stars player, were also in attendance to grace the occasion.
Flybe Confirmed Winter Schedule From Bournemouth Airport
FLYBE have confirmed their winter schedule from Bournemouth Airport will include six routes across the UK and Europe. It comes just days after airport bosses revealed passenger numbers are expected to rise at the airport this winter, thanks to a number of new flights. Flybe's winter routes this year will include Amsterdam, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Dublin, Glasgow, Jersey and Manchester. There will be 82 flights a week between October 25 and March 26, 2016. This will be the first winter of operations from Bournemouth for the airline, which opened its new base from Hurn in May this year with two 78-seat aircraft. And the schedule includes two flights a day to Glasgow, daily flights to Jersey and a twice daily flight to Manchester. Paul Knight, managing director, Bournemouth Airport, said: "We are pleased to see Flybe’s year-round commitment to Bournemouth Airport which offer a choice of routes for short break holidays this winter, plus day return trips to Glasgow and Manchester." As a result of Flybe's schedule and other airlines winter flights, passenger numbers are expected to rise by 50 per cent this year. Thomson and Ryanair will be flying to the Canary Islands, as well as Malaga, Alicante, and Cyprus throughout November. EasyJet will be going to Geneva six times a week from mid-December, while Crystal Ski's weekly flight to Turin will return a few days later. Last week, Manchester Airports Group, owner of Bournemouth Airport, revealed passenger numbers had stayed steady this year at 700,000. They are expected to "significantly increase" this year, said the group's annual report.
Hong Kong Airlines to start Gold Coast flights in January 2016
Hong Kong Airlines will launch direct flights between Hong Kong and the Gold Coast early next year, in what would be the first Australian route for the airline. From January 2016 the airline will fly from Hong Kong to Australia non-stop but will detour via Cairns on the return, with the now-seasonal flights slated to end on March 31 2016. “While this is an important first step, it is hoped that the success of the charter series will ultimately lead to a longer-term year-round scheduled service with Hong Kong Airlines into the Gold Coast,” said Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter. “These seasonal services have been secured thanks to a partnership between Gold Coast Tourism, Gold Coast Airport, Cairns Airport and Tourism and Events Queensland,” added Queensland Tourism Minister Kate Jones. While Qantas and Cathay Pacific both fly from Brisbane to Hong Kong, this would be the first service from the Gold Coast. The flights would run on Hong Kong Airlines' Airbus A330s fitted with both business and economy class cabins. The airline also has 15 advanced Airbus A350 jets on order for delivery from 2018.
