once you realize that ryan gosling has a bunch of tattoos dotted around his arms and start looking for it then you start to see how many little costume pieces are there to try and obscure them on grace. he has that wide watch he wears most of the time, his t-shirt sleeves all stop at the same precise spot on his biceps, when he wakes up in medical environments he'll have cuffs and bandages that cover those same spots, etc. they aren't 100% covered all the time, the barcode on his inner left wrist in particular sneaks in during a few hand-focused shots, but you only tend to notice if you're looking for it so the costume and makeup team did a perfectly serviceable job distracting from them. a fun thing this does, though, is characterize grace not as a person without tattoos, but as someone with tattoos who habitually covers them up even when he's up in space hanging out with his blind bestie.

I love Simon being shocked with how gentle Grace is but I have far much more fun writing Simon being shocked with how crazy Grace is. His unconventional way of science, his reckless endangerment of himself, how unfazed he is by Rocky- Rocky and Grace’s interactions in general- his dramatic celebrations and odd way of speaking. Like Grace is brimming with life compared to the world Simon came from.

Where Simon challenges The Father. Because!!! It shows he is smart, he’s always been smart. He challenges authority when it he doubts what they are saying.

Do you know how dangerous a doubting child in a cult is??

The Father laughs like he likes the question and that’s the trick because Cults hate questions and doubts and independent thinkers- but they pretend to love questions.

Especially from new members. Simon is a new member (came from Mars- that one conversation with his mother “I don’t want to go- Simon don’t be like that.”) They love to answer questions from new members because it offers them a chance to nip any doubt in the bud, answer with absolutes and half-answers and usually end in humiliating or tearing down the person who asked the question. Not to get personal on main but trust me. You just see their teeth sharpen when you admit to a doubt or ask a question as a kid. They’ll make you feel stupid for asking and if you keep not understanding their half answers (asking more questions) they will get angry at you for persisting.

That’s why I headcanon that Simon has always been a doubter- especially with his monologue later about “what’s more likely? The stars disappeared or a few space stations?” (Paraphrasing) but it’s a very difficult and painful life for a doubting child growing up in a quite literally inescapable cult. But doubting doesn’t necessarily mean he didn’t listen. Doubting doesn’t mean he didn’t fall for the dogma. He can still doubt and be their Butcher. They made him a solider, they made him loyal, and just because he privately thought it was all horse shit doesn’t mean he didn’t learn to not to challenge authority (that he still struggles with). That the belief sank into him like thorns, that he can’t help but feel a religious reverence for the seed despite hating what they did in the name of the Last Tree.

Religious trauma is just so complicated and especially cult trauma because they are literally masters of manipulating large groups of people and they have systems in place to keep their members there even if they don’t believe and even if they do escape, they leave lasting gashes.

I think the reason Simon and Grace would work so well is because Grace is a scientist.

Sure he is kind and clean and pretty which would be shocking and interesting to Simon but I think what would really make them compatible is that Grace is a scientist.

He asks questions, he encourages Simon to ask questions, to engage in his work, to propose hypotheses. Someone to talk to him like he’s a person who is just as smart and capable. And Grace would treat Simon like he is just as smart- see how he included Carl, security, with his scientific musings and experiment and credited Carl with the hypothesis! And his kids! He encouraged them to use their minds and engage with him.

Simon wouldn’t just let the science go over his head or ignore it. He’s not a blindly faithful person. He has his doubts and his questions and he voiced them often. And who is the first person we hear him voice his doubts about the Quiet Rapture to? A RESEARCHER. (well a blood eel posing/possessing a researcher but still.) and now he’s around someone who not only allows him to voice his doubts but encourages them, pushes back against them, considers and offers his own thoughts on it.

Just. Them being scientists together.
