"Mario Mario" is an anachronism. The thing about death of the author is I don't think you can apply it in ignorance. It's a deliberate choice you make. If you choose to reject the author's intent and substitute your own, you must first acknowledge what the author's intent was, and that means rejecting it says something about you. For a specific but nonspecific example, if you see a character that the author intends to be read as a transgender woman, and you go looking for a possible alternate interpretation... that's not a meaningless choice. Why are you rejecting that reading? What kind of person would?
