Rocky builds his xenonite EVA suit and the first thing he does is crawl into Grace's bed for sleep watch duty but he hate hate hates all the softness, blankets and mattress are soft and muffle sound and he keeps kind of tap-tap-tapping around trying to get comfortable and Grace laughs him out of bed because he looks for all the world like a cat making biscuits and Rocky is indignant like what the fuck is a cat question

thinking about time travel grace……….. what if you came back and you got a second chance but despite it all you wanted to change nothing? What if you wanted to change everything? Could you save them? Would it be right to try? Could you save yourself? Do you even want to? Somewhere out there, your best friend in the whole world is waiting, alone, for a saving grace for themself and their planet. Could you do it for them, all over again? (Of course) What would you have to do? Could you do it?

Just… the idea of Grace walking through life, walking through his time in the classroom and his time on the Stratt’s vat like he was walking through a memory he didn’t want to shatter. Him basking in the sunlight at every chance he got. Him telling stories like he’d lived a hundred years, and dropping hints to nudge things along, and maybe getting a tattoo, and living his life to the fullest because he understood exactly how precious all of this was. Him seeing Dubois and Shapiro and crying. Him volunteering and pushing to be the first candidate (how would this go? Would they let him? He’s not exactly an astronaut…)

him seeing Ilyukhina and Yao and just. Apologizing. For everything and nothing at all. Because he doesn’t know what happened the first time, and if it doesn’t happen again all three of them will die anyway out there. He’s so so so sorry.

Him holding Stratt at arms length emotionally in a way he didn’t the first time, even though she dragged him around just the same. Him understanding why she did it, and agreeing with her, but not finding it in himself to forgive her yet.

him seeing Rocky again, one way or another, and with tears in his eyes, smiling so wide his cheeks hurt.

maybe Rocky didn’t get sent back the way Grace did. Maybe they did. Maybe they didn’t, but when they saw Grace it still made a wave of relief press down on their carapace, because they knew they were saved.
