Would You Fall In Love With Me Again? - Ruikasa Week 2025
Day 5: Past Selves
(Heavily inspired by this 'No Longer You' Ruikasa animatic by @lasbiarez that I watched over and over again when it was first released. I am so normal about this animatic.)
They say that gods never make a mistake. But that opinion might only come from the worshippers' point of view.
Those who worship Rui will say that he is the kindest god, the painter of galaxies and creator of stars, who shows the way to lost sailors and destined heroes. A flawless god.
Yet, those who look deep into his myth know that the god made one mistake.
He fell in love. With an ordinary human, no less. A human named Tsukasa.
A human who had an interest in space, who wanted to build a rocket to live on the moon. He knew nothing of the moon being Rui's sanctuary, but the god wouldn't mind sharing dominion with this human. They talked every night; Rui told stories about heroes, and Tsukasa told him about his family and friends. He once asked, "What makes me special?" And Rui would just shrug. Until now, he couldn't precisely explain why he fell in love with Tsukasa. Perhaps it was his charm that never failed to make him laugh. Perhaps it was his melodious voice, like a soothing storyteller. Perhaps it was his smile that could rival the brightest star. Perhaps it was his personality, how he was always gentle with others.
Either way, there was no denying that the god was hopelessly in love with the human.
Tsukasa ended up not needing a rocket as Rui just picked him up and let him roam in his Sanctuary. The human was, of course, ecstatic with eyes filled with wonder - another reason why Rui loved him. He showed him the galaxy, the constellation, and the possible alternate universe between them. Every night, Tsukasa would call out to visit, and Rui would always open the pathway. They would skate through the nebulae, learning every name of the stars, crafting an arrow made out of a comet and shot to Earth to make a meteor shower, and fall asleep beneath the artificial moons before the god would tuck him to his bed. Rui cherished Tsukasa like he cherished his galaxies, maybe even more. He kissed him, held him close, treating him like the most precious ray of light. And Tsukasa would reciprocate without hesitation.
Until one day, Rui realized how fragile humans were. How short mortality was.
Tsukasa's hair turned white. Lines appeared at the corners of his eyes. His steps slowed. His hands wrinkled yet still held Rui's face with the same gentleness he always had. Rui remained unchanged, an eternal god, as he watched the years gather on the human he loved.
Tsukasa took his last breath in their sanctuary, and Rui mourned for him. He knew it wouldn't be fair to revive him, for his soul had belonged to the Underworld. He carried his body back to Earth, as if carrying a sleeping bride, and laid him on his bed for his family to find in the morning. Rui never loved another, eternally mourned for his one and only beloved. As the comet passed by, Rui reminisced about his time spent with his beloved. Every corner of his galaxy had been touched by Tsukasa, forever reminding Rui of the things he lost.
He paused at the memories of Tsukasa suggesting visiting an alternate universe, but Rui always denied him due to the paradox complication. Every alternate universe had its own Tsukasa - born under different stars, living different lives, dreaming different dreams.
But Rui, being a god, a singular fixed point, doesn't exist in any universe. He could easily insert himself into his beloved's alternate life to be together with him again - even if Tsukasa won't remember anything about this universe.
It was hope, cruel and infinite, and Rui embraced it anyway.
He emptied his godly body, becoming mortal, and jumped between universes to find his beloved.
He was a director, opening an audition for his orchestra. Tsukasa came in, more timid than his usual iteration. Animals gathered around his feet, listening to the beautiful melody of his piano. He didn't beg for his beloved to join in, to be part of his orchestra, not wanting suspicion of bribery or favoritism. But, oh, Tsukasa managed to steal his heart once again through music. He earned that spot. There wasn't a single night that Rui missed listening to his practice. He kissed his beloved one night, confessing his love, under the starry night. From city to city, nations to nations, they composed and performed together. They got married and had children who are also musicians. They grew old together. Until Tsukasa became too weak to play the piano again. He left the universe early, peacefully, with Rui and his children by his bedside.
He was a lord in a world where flowers have power. The Black Lily family, while noble, is not the most approachable. How ironic that his family crest represents 'curse' and 'rebirth'. It was the opposite of Tsukasa, born as the eldest in the White Lily family of 'purity' and 'rebirth'. How funny that both are stuck in the cycle of rebirth from his own selfishness. They fell in love during a ball held by the kingdom, and it was love at first sight. But this universe wasn't as flourishing as he thought. With the World Tree, the source of life in this universe, dying, it demanded a sacrifice. And Tsukasa - curse his kind soul - volunteered as the sacrificial lamb. No matter how hard Rui begged for them to run away, his beloved wouldn't leave - couldn't leave, not when the world needed his help. Tsukasa prayed, giving up his life force, in exchange for the World Tree blooming again. Rui held his beloved body in front of the tree, mourning for his unachieved love in this universe.
He was in a criminal organization to perform the greatest heist. The main performer, Mizuki the Masked Great Phantom Thief, was his greatest friend. He disguised himself as part of the police force, leaking information to the organization. But fate decided that his beloved became the detective, his enemies. Working side by side was exhilarating, and yet his heart felt heavy knowing he would have to go against him. Tsukasa and his partner, Detective An, (Rui swallowed the bitter jealousy), were smart, following the trail and discussing in secret out of his reach, finding out that Rui was listening. When they confronted him, he pointed his gun at them. He felt sick. He would never intentionally hurt Tsukasa. But he had his alliance in this story, and unfortunately, despite being a former god, he couldn't go against fate. They never meet again.
He was a sorcerer, blessed with corruption magic, but he never let it define him. Tsukasa was a knight from a different kingdom, an enemy kingdom, and had always tried to kill him. Oh, he felt really honored. He loved watching his beloved's face twisted in disgust and annoyance whenever they fight. It was amusing. But outside the battlefield, he was a pleasant person, as he knew he would. They started to meet in secret, away from their kingdom's eyes. They went to a festival together, dancing in the secret grove under the moonlight, Rui sneaking into Tsukasa's bedroom with teleportation magic, all those magical things. But he was caught, too careless to cover his tracks, too focused on the euphoria of forbidden love. He was captured because they had developed anti-magic weapons. But Tsukasa, standing in front of his own army, brandishing his sword and declaring which side he was on: the one whom he loved. He was executed for treason in the morning via the guillotine, and Rui couldn't stop it.
He was a ringmaster, signed a contract with the devil, who wants to corrupt humans through a magic circus. It felt weird to be beneath the devils when he could just destroy them with a snap of a finger in his god form. Tsukasa signed a contract way before his appearance. The table turned his beloved to resemble an annoying brat, teasing him every second in this universe. Ah, Rui tasted his own medicine, but it was nonetheless amusing. They played around the tightrope of shows and magic, trying to throw each other off yet catching them again like trapeze artists. But the devil favored his beloved more, being the one who kept him alive. Thus, Tsukasa owed the devil his life. The devil became stronger with each performance, yet it could do anything without a physical body. Rui tried to cut through the strings along with others who signed the contract, trying to save the jester before losing his soul. But his mind had been consumed, turning his beloved into a mindless vessel for the devil.
He was a tactician of a dynasty, raging war against another empire. They don't have enough power, so they prayed for the gods to help. He visited a temple, and there he met his beloved, a simple shrine worker, but Rui could sense a godly power radiating from him. Oh, how the tables had turned. They talked, Rui may or may not slipped some flirts, but Tsukasa accepted it. His beloved promised that he would speak to the god of the shrine. Which was really him: a qilin of the sun, such a beautiful contrast to Rui's previous god form. They fought side by side on the battlefield; sword clashing, arrows raining, and Tsukasa sweeping the ground with his tail. Rui was just a regular tactician, riding his horse with his bow and arrow. But his combat skill in this universe was lacking. It was easy to strike him down. Tsukasa caught him when his vision was blurry. Lying in the qilin's arms, Rui could feel Tsukasa's anger. With a scream, he unleashed all of his power, decimating the enemy's army and himself in a blast of Solarnova.
He was an archaeologist, going through the mines, joining exhibitions, traveling the world to discover new things. But he always came back home to Windblume City, his hometown, where his beloved stayed. Tsukasa was a chef of a family inn that he inherited. Every time Rui came home, his beloved would welcome him with a feast, and Rui would kiss him so lovingly. This was one of the few peaceful universes; no war, no curses, just soft magic. Rui and Tsukasa never had kids in this universe, but they had the adventurer who always visited them after every mission. They inherited the inn when the couple retired. They stared into the sunset from their porch, overlooking the city. Tsukasa rested his head on Rui's shoulder, and the former god could hear his beloved take his final breath.
Over and over again. One universe could be filled with romance. Another could be a tragedy. One could be interwined with magic, while another would be just a mundane bookstore. They would fight, but they would fall in love again. Each world was different, yet the same: Tsukasa always lived, and Rui always chased him, across lifetimes, across skies, across impossibly shifting fates.
Rui turned his head to Mizuki, his crewmate, who was adjusting the ropes nearby. Rui, already dressed in the royal garment and crown of the Clover Kingdom, stood at the bow, fingers tight around the railing. "Nervous about the trial?"
"Perhaps," Rui said. "But I've faced worse." Like seeing you beloved always die first in every universe.
Mizuki leaned against the railing next to him. Sometimes, Rui would see her alternate Masked Great Phantom Thief persona instead of her current marine admiral self. "I heard this prince is a real stuck-up. He always denied any prince or princess who was trying to court him. This trial was his parents' last resort to finally find him a partner."
Rui let out a chuckle. "Then I guess I'll have to impress him."
Mizuki smirked. "More like getting his attention without getting rejected."
"You think so low of me, dear Mizuki. Rui’s gaze returned to the horizon, where the Spade Kingdom's towers gleamed. "Even if it's just a moment, I want to be the one he notices."
This would be the first time Rui would meet Tsukasa of this universe. And he would make sure that he would reach him.
In the royal bedroom of Spade Kingdom, the prince sat on the window seat, a book of constellations in his hand, tracing the star patterns with a finger as if they could guide his thoughts. The quiet was broken by the soft click of the door, and a maid entered. She paused, lowered her gaze, and offered a deep, formal bow.
"Prince Tsukasa," she said. "It is time."
Tsukasa nodded and closed his book. "Alright. Send them to the courtyard. I'll be there."
The maid bowed again and left. Tsukasa took a deep breath before standing up. He headed to the end of his bed where a chest lay. Inside was a beautiful stringless bow, shimmering as if it were decorated by stardust.
He had done his part: he had bought his time until the very last second, until he couldn't. He just hoped his beloved would finally return to him, just like before.
