Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā THERE WAS A MOMENTĀ where Cat nearlyĀ shot back a
vein of sarcasmĀ at the boy. Ā They couldnāt take Rune away⦠he was stillĀ in the
building. Ā Though Cat wasnāt about to say thatĀ sort of thing to him. Ā Ā Ā It wasnāt
exactly the bestĀ time for messing around. Ā Ā Especially not while he was falling
apart at the seams. Ā So she held her tongue, instead glancing back. Ā Ā The voices
had caughtĀ her attention, Ā drawing green-brown gaze to the two menĀ comingĀ
at themĀ from down the hall.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āYes, because shoutingĀ is going tāmake us listen.ā Ā It was said in
a low mutterĀ so as to not be heard. Ā Ā The venomĀ in her voice might have been
enough to make a person shudderĀ if it had been. Ā Her ireĀ was building ā didnāt
these people see how terribleĀ they were being? Ā No one should be locked up
for a scienceĀ experiment. Ā Ā Ā Ā There was a difference between being arrested or
volunteering yourself from straight up being held against your will. Ā Although
it wasnāt exactly right of her to Ā Ā talk Ā Ā Ā or think such matters considering she had
escapedĀ from a perfectly reasonable arrest herself. Ā Ā Ā Though, the lawĀ was far
beyond her reachĀ by this point in her life. Ā Ā Ā Cat would just continue to do what
she believed to be right by her. Ā Or by those she caredĀ for.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Running to one wall, she craned her head up to look at the window
high above them. Ā If they had something to standĀ on, it would be much lessĀ of a
problem. Ā Hands felt stickyĀ with a nervous sweat. Ā Despite her confidence, she
knew she was still capable of failing. Ā Ā Ā So she snagged the nearest desk. Ā Ā Then
dragging of it grated along the tile floor, creating a splittingĀ noise. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā A wince
flickered across her features, irritationĀ settled in her bones. Ā This hadĀ to work.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Once it was up along the wall, Cat pulled herself atop. Ā Knife was
pulled out and blade held carefully. Ā Putting as much force into the swing as she
could muster, Ā Ā a cry of determination filled her before hilt SMASHEDĀ through.
Glass showered down, getting caught in her jacket. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Yet she turned and held
out a hand for Rune, ignoring the shard that had scraped against her face.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āCāmon. Ā Iāmma lift yāupĀ and youāll go through the window first. Ā Iāll
Ā Ā Ā Ā follow right behind you. Ā Weāre one story up so itās a small drop, but yācanĀ do
Ā Ā Ā Ā it, just tuck and rollĀ on the landing, okay? Ā Cāmon, Rune, hurry!ā
Ā Ā Ā Black wings slid out on instinct, muscles beginning
Ā Ā Ā Ā to ache with the urge to flap them and pick up speed. He had no
Ā Ā Ā Ā idea if they were gaining on them, but he wasnāt going to look
Ā Ā Ā Ā back and find out. One thing had remained in his mind that pushed
Ā Ā Ā Ā him forwards; run. Run and donāt look back. Those had been the
Ā Ā Ā Ā words of his mother--and only once in his life had he ever disobeyed
Ā Ā Ā Ā them. He had ended up regretting that one exception.
Ā Ā Ā Ā The scuffed soles of his sandals squeaked across the floor as he
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā made a sharp turn towards the wall, hearing the footsteps gain on
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā them. Their growing closeness pushed him to run ever faster.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Now his wings slid closed, no longer focusing on speed but more
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā so agility. They were right up against the wall, and soon he was
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā lead to the window that they could both escape through.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Despite his bravery, he couldnāt help but yelp as it was shattered,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā sending glass in both directions as it scattered on the floor. Some
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā pieces would become caught in his scruffy hair but Rune didnāt
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā care---he wanted out of here. Unfortunately, just as he was hopping
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā out the window did one of the men finally catch up--attempting to
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā push Cat away in a rather hasty manner and snag Rune by the
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā hand. Heād get one of his primaries instead.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Rune had already made it out the window by then, but suddenly,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā for a split second he was dangling by the wing--painfully--before
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā hisĀ ācaptorāsā grip loosened. The boy let out a sharp yelp, thrown
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā off from a proper landing. Heād end up landing on his back, horns
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā striking across the cement and wings splayed. Around him was
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā the shattered glass, that had been scattered across the other
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā side.
Ā Ā Ā ā C-Ca-at!Ā ā Though dazed, Rune struggled onto
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā his feet. He was discombobulated, and sore, and dazed, but for
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā now his adrenaline numbed the pain of the glass and the impact
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā of his fall while he found his footing. His ears rang, barely making
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā out the sound of a strange, incessantĀ ābeepingā noise and distant
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā voices.Ā ā CAT!Ā ā
