ϟ ━ was that ALASTOR MOODY around the leaky cauldron ? HE disapparated before i could approach them ! what a pity, for they are RESOURCEFUL and COURAGEOUS but maybe it’s best to keep my distance because they are also HARSH and DEMANDING. i remember they were a GRYFFINDOR back in school but have since made a name for themselves as an AUROR. rumor has it their stance on this alleged war is with THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, which may explain why they remind me of HARSH WORDS SPOKEN WITHOUT MALICE, CONSTANTLY LOOKING OVER YOUR SHOULDER, MEMORIES OF A LIFE LONG FORGOTTEN WHO SEEM TO BELONG TO SOMEONE ELSE, WHISKEY BEING CARELESSLY POURED AFTER A LONG DAY, LAYING AWAKE AT NIGHT THINKING OF PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE. stats.
key points.
Alastor was raised in pureblood society, the youngest of four sons of renowned aurors Winston and Lyanna moody.
Growing up he was spoiled and conceited, never wanting for anything but knowing he could get whatever he wanted, he was brilliant but lazy, with more to offer on the quidditch pitch than in the classroom.
With his brothers already carrying on the family legacy as aurors, Alastor dreamed of becoming a international quidditch sensation.
When Alastor was 16 years old he lost his entire family at the hands of dark wizards seeking revenge. The only reason he survived was because he was at Hogwarts. The Moody family was greatly respected and an immediate investigation was launched by the Ministry, the wizards responsible were apprehended and sent to Azkaban.
Alastor chose to become an Auror to honor his family as they had been killed for doing their jobs, for doing what was right.
He tries to live up to the family name but it’s getting harder with each day.
He comes off as harsh and aloof, but is a big softie on the inside, he just tries to keep people at arm’s length because he’s lost so many people.
(There’s a HC regarding his paranoia and failed engagement but I’ll wait until we get more auror characters to work out the timeline/details, I don’t wanna impose)
wanted plots & connections.
&&. KEEP ME GROUNDED
Is not that Alastor forgets social niceties and manners, is that he just couldn’t care less whether people like him or not. Which only leads to him coming off as a straight up asshole on his worse days, and a paranoid grump on a daily basis. He could use someone he respects and is strong enough to call him out when he’s being a jerk. To point out where the line is, and making it clear that it is not okay to cross it. OPEN
&&. BROTHERS IN ARMS
You are only as good as the person fighting next to you. Someone Alastor had grown to respect and rely on. They might not always have a heart-to-heart about their feelings, but this is one of the few people Alastor knows he can turn to. Whether sharing drinks or just being there for each other, this is one of the few people Alastor can honestly say he trusts. OPEN
&&. SURE I’LL TEACH YOU
Alastor has a hard time believing anyone in their right mind would chose him as a mentor. Even so Alastor stepped into the role and with each passing generation he gets better at preparing aurors. Now with the order he has also taken the responsibility to get them ready for a fight he wished they never had to fight. Alastor is always willing to work with anyone who wants to be better prepared and work on refining their technique. OPEN
&&. JUST PROMISE YOU WON’T END UP LIKE ME
Callous grumpy nature aside, Alastor is a mentor at heart, and sometimes even if it surprises everyone around, he might end up giving some advice to those brave enough to bring up discussing their feelings with him. Rumor says the best time to approach him is when he’s drinking, that’s when he’s more at ease, he might even pour you one. Mary MacDonald, OPEN
&&. FIGHT ME
It’s not that he lives to make enemies, that’s just something that happens from time to time. With the wizarding society hanging by a fine thread, and Alastor living up to his last name every day of the week, everyone could easily fall into this category. Whether this is someone who annoys him, like a fellow ministry employee, or someone Alastor would love to punch their teeth out if the opportunity ever were to arise. OPEN
&&. NOTHING LEFT TO SAY BUT GOODBYE
Alastor was born and raised into the pureblood life. His parents were never pureblood elitists, and coming from a long line of Aurors they had an impeccable reputation. His family was murdered before any of them could be labeled blood traitors. At sixteen Alastor was left to carry on a family legacy. He cultivated many friendships through his childhood and early years in Hogwarts. Some of those friends, that he once considered family, have now turned out to be on the other side of the war. What happens when the person you would take a hit for is the one pointing the wand at you? OPEN
&&. I WOULD FOR YOU
Alastor’s family was taken from him in the blink of an eye. For years he convinced himself that caring for anyone was only going to end in pain and heartbreak. Despite having friends that he cared for and loved, he always tried to push them and keep them at arm’s length. After a failed engagement he accepted the fact that he was not meant to have a family. Alastor might never have children of his own, but family has always been about more than blood. Frank Longbottom
Major Arcana Ask Meme: The Magician, The Devil, & Judgement ???
I. The Magician — What does your muse consider themselves an expert in?
Combative Magic, very useful in his line of work, even from a young age Alastor was surrounded by expert duelist, it was only natural he picked it up easily. Due to the nature of his work this is a very known fact, but something people might not know is that he’s also an expert at flying, Alastor is very skilled on a broom, and even considered a professional career in Quidditch.
XV. The Devil — Has your muse ever given into temptation?
In varying degrees yes. In his youth some would even call him a problem student, never enough to get in serious trouble and jeopardize the family name. And as he grew old, let’s just say the one time he decided to give into temptation it cost him greatly.
XX. Judgement — Describe a time where your muse had to make a difficult decision.
XIII. Death — Describe a time where your muse felt like they lost a major part of their life.
As a young auror Alastor convinced his then fiancée that being late to their rendezvous with the rest of their squad would not be a big deal. When they arrived they found everyone dead, it had been a set-up and their squad had walked into a trap. Of course they were called in for questioning, having been the only survivors. The guilt took a lot from them both, Clarissa ended up moving to America, taking a job at MACUSA. Alastor stayed and was rewarded by being tasked with training new recruits.
XVI. The Tower — What does your muse consider to be the worst thing that ever happened to them?
When Alastor was sixteen years old he was called into the headmaster’s office. There were Ministry officials and Aurors waiting there as well. And in that moment Alastor knew what it meant, that he had lost someone he loved. Except it was way worse. His entire family had been killed by an escaped dark wizard his oldest brother had hunted and arrested.
Losing everyone he ever loved was the worst thing that happened to him.
It was definitely the first time he took a life. It was without a doubt the most difficult decision he had ever taken, and the most difficult thing he had ever done. Alastor always tries to arrest, if he needs to wound he does, but never aims to kill. This time was different, and several lives were at stake, so he did what he had to do. He knows it was the right to do, but it wasn’t an easy choice, and it took him a long time to come to terms with it.
IX. The Hermit — Describe how your muse deals with personal issues.
Exactly like a hermit. Not really, but yes, he shuts down and doesn’t talk about it. He is a very private person, and while he didn’t use to be, by the time of his last year of Hogwarts he was a completely different person. With time his paranoia has been growing, not is not just about not being burden by not sharing what he’s going through, but rather not giving his enemies any leverage.

WHO: OPEN
Dark brows drew together in a mixture of affront and surprise at the witch who brusquely pushed in front of him –– where Sirius had been waiting, patiently, as one does in a queue –– and he turned back toward the person standing just behind him, shooting them an expressive glance with brows now shooting up and eyes wide, as if to say ‘did you just see that?’
AND THEN his lips parted and he actually said it, none too quietly, in the rumbling Yorkshire accent he’d trained himself to speak in after he realized just how mad it would drive Walburga to hear it in her posh and proper household. “Did you just see that? Am I a ghost? Have I descended past the mortal coil and entered ice-cream hell for some reason?” A bit dramatic, really, but could anyone blame him for feeling grumpy about one more body between himself and a cone of double, double, toil and bubblegum sorbet?
There weren’t many things Alastor enjoyed —okay there were plenty of thing he enjoyed, but he only allowed himself a handful— the drinking was more of a need than anything else, so what he had left were sweets. He was a lost case whenever he was over for diner at The Burrow, was certain that if he was to be poisoned it would be through a sweet he just couldn’t refuse.
So that’s why he found himself standing in line at Fortescue’s witnessing Sirius’ overly dramatic antics, ❝take it down a notch Black, you are not a ghost and all of us in the queue are not invisible, it’s just that some people have no manners❞ Alastor said backing up Sirius, because no one got between him and his caramel and firewhiskey ice-cream, plus he hated rude people.
Mary had turned the lock with her wand in hand at her side, pausing for a moment with her other hand on the doorknob. She needed to take a deep breath to recover from the fright she had just had. Moody wasn’t somebody that she wanted to have see her looking scared. Actually, she’d rather nobody knew the extent of her fears.
When Moody called out for her to identify herself, she knew he must not have known she was home and was instead on her property for another reason. Perhaps something to do with the investigation? She wondered a bit excitedly.
With a long exhale she felt her body relax and she finally turned the doorknob, coming out slowly. She extended her wand out in front of her, just in case it wasn’t actually Alastor Moody. After all, he probably would be disappointed if any member of the Order wasn’t practicing ‘constant vigilance’. Mary sometimes found herself too vigilant since the tragedy that befell her family, overly worried that anything could be lurking around the corner. She wouldn’t be caught unawares, not again.
“Moody, it’s just me. Mary.” she identified herself, wondering if he might be disappointed she wasn’t an intruder. She walked down the short stone pathway to the edge of the property, waving her wand wordlessly to end the caterwauling charm as she approached. When in front of him, she held her wand up slightly at him, “It is you, right? If I were to ask you what the weather was like during the last time you saw me, what would you answer?” She wanted to be sure it was him.
-
❝Unusually warm❞ smart girl, Alastor thought, and then recalled the trace charm, while he was disappointed at not having a lead, he would be lying if he said he wasn’t glad Mary was back. The case had hit him deeper than he cared to admit, and he had barely had a chance to talk to Mary before she took off. He didn’t blame her, hell he had wanted to do the same, but at sixteen there weren’t many options for him, and by the time he was of age his mind was set about returning for his final year, if he had been older Alastor was sure he would’ve run. ❝I didn’t know you were back already MacDonald, gave me quite the scare, but glad someone’s been paying attention about protective spells...❞ most members of the order were young and dismissed Alastor as overprotective —how anyone knowing Alastor would even think of calling him protective, he had no idea— and the older members began to worry about him becoming paranoid, but anyone having experienced what he had, if they had witness what he had, they would understand. ❝I’m afraid I don’t have good news, or I should say any news at all... but the department is still working on it, there are some very insistent members that won’t let it go down the pile❞ he gave Mary a small smile, ❝how are you?❞ Alastor asked, not knowing where it came from, but knowing it was the right thing to ask, even if he knew it would be a hard thing to answer, he wasn’t good at small talk, or feelings, but he had been through what Mary was going, something not many people had, and he understood.
Eight weeks had gone by fast. Possibly because Mary was always on the move during her recent trip. I just need to get away for a while, she had told her friends. She hadn’t specified how long she would be away, or where exactly she was going, mainly because she wasn’t sure herself, but also she wouldn’t have told them if she knew. Marlene was the only one she had told the truth to. I have to look for Drew. I’m not an idiot, I know there’s barely a chance, but I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t try. What if he’s out there? I shudder to think how that would have come to be, but…. what if?
Her friend was honest with her, wishing her luck in her search but sharing her opinion that Mary wouldn’t find her brother. At the time, that made Mary mad and she blew up at Marlene. She knew it was a futile attempt and that Marlene was likely right, that Drew was gone too, but her emotions were more in control at the time and Mary didn’t want to accept that there was no chance at all. She didn’t want to accept that she was the last of her family left alive. After a while, Mary sent Marlene a post card from Washington D.C. (her childhood home) apologizing for being an ass and letting her know she was alright. At least as alright as she could possibly be.
Mary had toured areas of the United Kingdom that Drew might have known people in or had visited before. She did the same in the United States, starting with their birthplace and then traveling further west to see places and people Drew knew. A few times she thought she saw him, but it was always just wishful thinking and a similar looking man. Every night she laid in a motel room after a fruitless day of searching would leave her feeling empty and heartbroken.
The trip gave her a lot of time to think, possibly too much, although in some ways she really did need this escape. But all things must end, and it was long past the time Mary should have come home. She didn’t want to worry anybody, but most importantly there was still a war to be won. A war she could never abandon, no matter how much it had already taken from her.
Mary had been back for two days, and her luggage still sat in the small foyer of the MacDonald cottage. She had caught up on sleep, feeling insanely jetlagged from her flight home. Now in the light of the late morning she awoke and went to her kitchen to make a cup of tea. The tea cup was only in her hand for a few seconds when a loud caterwauling caused her to break it in her grasp. She dropped the pieces, which shattered more when they hit the flagstones, and she whipped her wand from her pocket. A caterwaul charm was one of many protections she had put on the house when she was home, and someone had tripped it. Moving slowly toward the door, she told herself to stop trembling, but her body wouldn’t listen. She peered through the window panes, careful to stay out of view. Suddenly, she saw them, and immediately sighed as she put her wand down at her side. How’d you already know I was home? she wondered as she unlocked the door.
Tiredness clung to his bones, the cold air that hit his face was doing what little it could to keep him alert. Alastor was old, he liked to say so every time he had a chance, but he wasn’t that old. There was no reason for every inch of his body to feel like it might give out at any moment. An old soul, was one of the kinder descriptions people gave about him. And it was probably the only one that was far from the truth. Alastor had never been an old soul. He had just been forced to grow up too quickly. One moment all he had to worry about was Quidditch and not being late for his lessons. Life in the castle felt so far away, at times he could not even recall the moments properly. It was starting to scare him. How easily it was all disappearing from his mind. One day he had been woken up to the news that would change his life forever. Even after losing everything, he remained young for a while. The prospect of going through auror training, he had a legacy to protect, a promise to fulfill, a dream to achieve.
But now, now with each passing day he felt they were doing less and less. They were going in circles. It was as if the universe wanted them to always be a step behind. Except it feel as if they were a dozen steps behind. The number of missing persons was growing almost exponentially. It was alarming. But what alarmed Alastor the most was how little progress they were making. Life still went on. Once in a while Alastor would silently wince whenever he saw the faces of the young aurors. If he was feeling like whatever he did was useless, it was not hard to imagine how they must be feeling. But this job is not for those that give up easily, this was what would make them or break them. Sure there were policies at the Ministry that prevented them to do as much as they wanted in order to help, but Alastor believed it wasn’t fair for the families of those that had suffered. So had decided to take on a little off the books investigation.
He had gone back to the MacDonald residence, maybe he would find something that was initially missed, there was still the missing son issue, and the insistence by muggle cops that it had been him, but the signs were clear, something dark and sinister had taken place there. Lost in his thoughts Alastor missed the protective spells places around the property, hands flying to his ears, ❝bloody hell❞ he mumbled, then with a swift motion made it stop, so it seemed someone was back, Mary, no doubt, who else would place protective spells, unless? someone wanting to wipe all traces? perhaps, Alastor raised his wand, better safe than sorry. ❝Auror department identify yourself❞ he said just to make it seem official in case they tried to run, a trace charm silently placed if they tried to apparate, this might be the lead he was looking for.
rita enjoyed chaos and she enjoyed wine, though she preferred the latter served somewhere cleaner (to say the least), very few establishments could offer the former quite like the leaky cauldron. positioned clearly at the bar, the patrons only had themselves to blame for whatever storm she was able to cook up concerning them.
tilting her head slightly to gauge the person on her left, rita’s interest piqued. “are you people watching too?” she whispered dramatically, raising her glass to her lips for a delicate sip.
Alastor had spent the last day following a suspect. Nothing out of the ordinary had happened yet but he still wasn’t ready to let it go. So far he had been able to stay hidden and conceal his presence but when the wizard walked into the Leaky Cauldron he knew he was going to have to come inside and somehow mingle with the crowd. Which didn’t prove to be difficult as the place was crowded. Alastor took a seat at the bar, and signaled for a firewhiskey, while he wasn’t a stranger to drinking alone, he wasn’t thrilled to be out drinking alone, which was second only to other patrons getting chatty. ❝I’m always people watching❞ he said before looking at the owner of the voice, big mistake, he had walked himself into a conversation with Rita Skeeter, who in Alastor’s book could only be described as dangerous.
mbti: ISFJ ❝the defender❞ The Defender personality type is quite unique, as many of their qualities defy the definition of their individual traits. Though sensitive, Defenders have excellent analytical abilities; though reserved, they have well-developed people skills and robust social relationships; and though they are generally a conservative type, Defenders are often receptive to change and new ideas. // I was incredibly surprised at the result, so much that I took it twice on two different days, the description is actually true but very deep down, it is certainly not the image that Alastor projects to the world.
moral alignment: Lawful Good A lawful good character acts as a good person is expected or required to act. He combines a commitment to oppose evil with the discipline to fight relentlessly. He tells the truth, keeps his word, helps those in need, and speaks out against injustice. A lawful good character hates to see the guilty go unpunished. // Another surprising result, I had envisioned Alastor as more of a Neutral Good characters, but reading the description it truly nails who Alastor is, even with his issues with the Ministry, he does believe in justice and at least the DMLE (specially the Aurors’ office)
enneagram: Type 8 ❝The Protector/The Challenger❞ The most basic desire of the Enneagram Type 8 is to protect themselves and remain in control of their own lives. They seek to defend themselves and others from injustice. Protectors defend themselves by avoiding and denying vulnerability. They believe, somewhat subconsciously, that vulnerability will make them appear weak; therefore, they avoid it at all costs. // This one is Alastor through and through, no surprises there!
