I promised I would get these done!
It was such a fun project to complete as I had totally forgot about these designs when I was fourteen. I attempted making a comic for these two but I got bored of these characters quickly as I didn’t have a solid plot idea other than a magic market but maybe I might revisit the concept in the future, you never know when you finally get the inspiration you need. For the sake of comparison, here are the comic pages I salvaged since these were all I could find of their character designs.
For some odd reason, it looks I attempted to draw this with a sharpie and that actually maybe the real reason I gave up on this. Back then, I wasn’t good at drawing hands, so I took nearly every opportunity to draw in a more chibi style and kept their hands looking like mittens so I could avoid drawing fingers. I like to think that I got better at drawing details, composition, and line work. I look at this now and see how cluttered everything was and rough the pen work is. Having color also helps their individual designs stand out and contrast against each other. The figure on the left, who was unfortunately never named so we’ll just call her Ribbon, had a very elegant and gothic look so I decided to go for a more stark white and black aesthetic with just a pop of red to give her that vampiric princess look. The character on the right, Hana, had a very bouncy attitude and girly look so I thought it would be fun to go the Lisa Frank route and just dump a bunch of bright colors on her, like she got dipped in a rainbow.
This was such a fun challenge to try out and breathe some new life into these designs. Despite my shortcomings, I wish I had the boldness of these more crazy designs like I did when I was younger. It’s a little kitschy but there’s zero shame in it and I think that’s something I should try to embrace more, haha!
