A guide for making outdoor running pleasant :)
It is a time for another: let’s make this ONE THING as comfortable, convenient and stress free, as it can possibly be.
Running miles can feel like your personal hell. But it sure doesn’t have to be! Let’s go over some things about mindset, goals, preparation and vibing. :)
Firstly, your relationship with running should be healthy. If you feel like, your whole world is spiralling for missing a run or for not improving on your times… Some self reflecting might be in order.
Prepare for your runs well ahead. Set your running gear in a easy access place, and eat according to your physical needs. If nothing else ruins your run, it is low blood sugars and the feeling of coldness and stiffness.
If you feel stressed about your energy levels on the second half of your run, maybe drink a bit of coffee before leaving the house. I do this, when the weather is awful, but I really want to go running, but I’m afraid of slowing down too much on the way back. I run after the sun has set, so the temperature drops rapidly, and I would rather not get cold and tired in a forest maintenance road in the dark.
- If your nerves can tolerate it, on a longer run carry a small bottle of fluids with you. Or some sort of a snack. I have a couple of pieces of chocolate in my pocket, if I’m going running in bad weather. It makes the whole thing more tolerable, because at least you got something that tastes good with you, if you end up having to walk.
Listen to something you love. Something that you only listen while you run, because then you are always looking forward to running. I listen to Earbiscuits, and a new episode comes every Sunday, so you can bet that I never miss my Monday morning run, no matter how crappy the weather is.
Wear comfortable clothes and rotate them. If you have more than one pair of shoes, definitely rotate them too. This sometimes improves the condition of your foot, especially if you have low arches or blister easily.
- Seriously, going jogging in a soft, loose and a well structured hoodie is the best thing ever. Especially, when it is really windy, and you can just huddle inside of a warm hoodie, amazing.
Sometimes the running just doesn’t want to happen. The road is covered in ice, it is cold, windy and you get a face full of sleet. And then you fall over and your pants are soaked in cold slush. Just walk it of. Do a shorter version of your route and instead of running, do weird af power walking dance moves. Exercise is exercise, it doesn’t matter what you do.
I sometimes just walk and sing show tunes. Or if there is some easily breakable ice: I jump around like a maniac.
If you want to do a certain number of runs per week, maybe assign different goals for every single run. It is not mentally good in the long run, to always expect to run a new pb. Some runs can be just for fun and others are for kicking ass.
I hope that this helps somebody else, these are some things, which make me enjoy running to the fullest. :)
