• Mare Barrow On Screen • who else thinks that isabella moner is suitable to play mare barrow? or is it just me?
loving this book more than anything
found this in pinterest. but did he really?
How the fuck did he choose the crown for Mare? The crown is literally what the whole rebellion with the Scarlet Guard is against. If he’s going against what Mare believes in, the cause that she’s been fighting for, the cause that she’s risked her life so many times for, the cause that she was imprisoned within the castle for, how is he helping her?
Let me give you an analogy. Let’s say you’re a religious person and you dedicate most of your life to prayer, etc. Then, you meet someone who isn’t exactly atheist but they’re not relgious either (let’s go with agnostic). You bring them to prayer groups, the temple, etc., and they seem to be leaning towards believing in God. Then, all of a sudden, the next day they’ve decided to join some sort of atheist revolution group whose purpose is to eradicate the belief in God. In fact, they become the LEADER of this group. Say they give you some sort of excuse telling you that they’re doing it all for you, for your cause, would you believe them? Would you say they’re doing it all for you?
Of course not, because they’re LEADING A GROUP THAT WANTS TO OVERTHROW YOUR BELIEFS.
Please, stop trying to excuse Cal’s shitty actions. Stop trying to romanticize them, stop trying to make him out to be better than he actually is. WHAT HE DID WAS WRONG, NO MATTER WHAT HIS REASONS. PERIOD, END OF DISCUSSION.
Cal is his own character, he has his own wants and needs, and since the beginning the throne was supposed to be his, destined for him, and he had an option to get it back. It’s what he’s always wanted, and we clearly see throughout the series that cal is only in the scarlet guard because mare is there. And from Cals POV, getting the throne back was important for him, who knows who else would have been there instead of him. I mean sure, he could probably easily argue he took the throne back for good purposes, or even for mare, and there’s definitely a lot of people out there who’d agree with his actions in Kings Cage. But it was clear what he’s wanted from the start.
Also, no, the scarlet guard wants to see equality, so more of a democracy/government, not crown alone, not necessarily monarchy, but remember who agreed to the alliance, cough The Leader Of The Scarlet Guard, Davidson, so there’s clearly more behind this than “ok well we don’t want the crown here so,,,,” there are obviously terms behind it all and yes, we can see they’re working to remove the monarchy from the system and rule out equality, not “literally what the whole rebellion with the scarlet spguard is against.” Also, in Davidson case, I’m sure in his opinion, having cal on the throne instead of a silver who are similar to Evangeline’s parents, who turn their noses up to reds, means having someone who is more beneficial and negotiable, and Cal isn’t going to give up mare that easily so it’s a great leverage for the scarlet guard to have cal on the throne instead of someone else.
And before you all fight me, I do not excuse his shit choices in life, but I can still see why he chose them.
you totally just wrote down everything I was going to say. true. I didn’t give any excuse for what Cal did. he made shitty choices. but imagine if he holds the crown, if he holds the power, he could literally use himself whether to help the scarlet guard, to get mare. basically if you hold the crown, you hold everything. isn’t that why everyone wants the crown for themselves?
now before you all judge me again, i wasn’t trying to defend cal. i was trying to point out that whoever holds the crown and preserve it, could win and get everything that he wants.
The point of the OP and @themavencycle is reminding people that Cal didn’t choose the crown for Mare, as some Cal fans argue. Sure, you can explain why he chose the crown, it’s not difficult to see, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t disrespectful to Mare’s wishes, after she wondered why anyone needed to be king. He did not care about Mare’s concerns, thus he could not have chosen the crown for Mare. This is the part the fandom should realize.
thus the question in the first place, did he really choose it for Mare? because the probability is low to the point of non-existing at all.
