Urban Arcade Project
The Urban Arcade Project is a series of works and events that I create and or curate in order to bring communities together through art and video games. The first work in the project will be a full sized photo booth that will run off of a Gameboy Camera, SNES, Super Gameboy 2 and a Gameboy Printer.
I’m not the best at sketching out my ideas but you can get a sense of what the final product will be. The 7ft tall structure will house the game system, a TV and a camera. Observers can interact with the game using arcade buttons on a panel inside the booth. The user can take their picture and then print it using the GB printer, which will be located outside the booth.
I am currently in the process of planning and building the structure out of wood. I have 90% of the materials needed and I am working out how to hook the SNES controller up to the arcade buttons. I am also working out how to run the GB printer off of an AC plug instead of 6 AA batteries.
The booth will make its first appearance at Baltimore’s Automatic Art Festival on November 4th, 2016. For more information visit their website.
The Urban Arcade Project will be ongoing and will include art from myself and other artists who make video game based or video game culture based art. Current ideas I have for UAP:
- Video game based art shows (includes local venders selling game based products)
- Gorilla gaming: game systems in outdoor urban areas. Outdoor Sega boxes, Gameboys mounted to exterior walls.
- Outdoor gaming competitions projected onto buildings, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, etc.
- Photo booth for rent at parties and events
- Making and showing video game based 2D, 3D, and interactive art in public galleries and spaces.
