now tht i’ve started w Unpopular LGBT Opinions, going on and on abt how pride is Fun, Safe, a Cool Safe Space for Partying and Having Fun is extremely American / Western European / etc and i spend my days scrolling the dashboard like “can’t relate” lmao

i went to my first and only pride parade in 2014, i was 16 years old. me and my friends were harassed and almost attacked by a member of the crowd who came to stand in the sidelines to watch and harass LGBT people, just for wanting to take my rainbow flag outside the parade. there was no rule saying I can’t, and this man tried to make me leave it or give it to him, blocking my way out. a middle aged gay man came and defended a very terrified 16 year old me and friends, and we snuck away without the homophobe noticing, and without my flag too. he would have physically attacked me if i had left with my flag. in plain sight of the police.

the next year (2015) i could not go bc my mother would have killed me, my friends went and the police attacked the crowd, people i know were detained and my close friends were hit with tear gas, water cannons and even rubber bullets.

the next two years saw the same kind of repression and violence, and people kept trying to hold parades anyway. they were literally attacked for being visibly LGBT and just being in public, not even protesting or holding a parade. this year, any LGBT events (along with most other protests and events) are banned in the major cities because of “public safety” and “morality” and “health” reasons.. people will try again, of course, we’re that kind of people, but they’ll just face more police brutality

like i KNOW that people living in some places have nothing to worry about when going to pride and having fun, but that’s definitely a minority experience when you consider.. the world..
