Look I like... I do (kind of) understand the appeal of ReShirement AUs, but they nevertheless always make my brain go wibbly in a really weird way bc ReShirement is sooooo... fundamentally against everything I feel strongly about for Thorin Oakenshield
You Know Who You Are

Everyone who watches any Star Trek show should thank Lucille Ball for saving the original series, and therefore bringing us so many shows, movies, books, and fanfiction terms from it even after all these years.
Everyone thank Lucille Ball.
I haven’t watched Star Trek: The next generation yet, but from what I’ve seen online I’ve come to the conclusion that data is the biggest sweetheart ever and everyone is mean to him for some reason.
Yes he’s a sweetheart but half the plots of the show are about the crew risking everything to save Data because they love him. There’s a small handful of instances of Data being cut-off mid sentence because it’s neither the time nor place for a Wikipedia page explanation but there’s also about a hundred instances of immense respect, love, and sacrifice too. Data is very much loved and admired by the entire senior staff to the point it’s a repeating theme of the show.
Cue the famous Riker outburst:
Ezri eventually dies, as most people do
The Dax symbiont is passed to the next host
Dax pays a visit to their old friend, the renowned author, Jake Sisko
"Dax, what are you doing here?"
"the last host of mine to not know your father was Joran. And, well, no one wants a repeat of that. I think Siskos may be my good luck charm"
we cut to a montage wherein the first thing Dax does in every lifetime once left to their own devices is to go find Benjamin's closest living descendent. Sometimes they become friends. Sometimes, best friends. Once, they even married, but that's a story for another time. Sometimes, they have a dinner, check in, then go their separate ways.
But as long as every Dax has a Sisko, nothing like Joran ever happens again.
And every Sisko knows, once in a generation, right when they need it the most, to expect a knock at the door. Every Sisko knows to look forward to their next visit from an old friend, from The Old Man.
