Get some sleep. I love you.
So here’s my thought on the whole “13rw glorifies violence thing”. Short answer, I don’t believe it does. Take Montgomery for example, last season he did some pretty terrible things, he beat up Alex, he stood by Bryce, altogether he was a bully. But, people still loved him (which is fine, i completely understand wanting characters to have redemption arcs). This is a popular theme I’m finding on tumblr though, liking a character who is morally wrong. Take for example Loki, Billy (Stranger Things), and Nathan (Life is Strange). These are not good characters, they’ve done terrible things, some worse than Monty of Bryce. So, why do people continue to like them, even though they’ve killed, bullied and generally caused harm? Because unlike 13rw these characters were never shown in the light that Monty was. Sure, you know they’re not great people, but you never see Loki killing in such a graphic manner, you never see Billy beating up his sister. Not seeing how brutal and graphic these characters can be makes it easier to forgive them. Monty was an ass all last season, but it wasn’t until the graphic bathroom scene that people realized he was unredemable. If Loki had been shown murdering people during the Avengers/Thor I garuntee less people would be fans of him. There’s this culture on tumblr that even though characters have done irredeemable things they can still be saved. The victims of these characters would say otherwise, but the full brutality of their story was never shown so it makes it easier for people to excuse the characters actions. This theme can somewhat be applied to today. For example, with school shootings. They happen frequently in America, and people have come to view them as a natural thing. They should not be viewed as commonplace. I can say I’m guilty of this mindset; when someone would tell me another shooting had happened I would just sigh and roll my eyes. Then the Stoneman Douglas shooting happened. This shooting came with a plethora of videos and I chose to view one. I’ve seen death on my TV, I’ve been to funerals, but this video opened my eyes to the true brutality of what it was like to be in that situation. Sighing wasn’t enough, ignoring what was happening around me wasn’t enough, action needed to be taken. Watching 13rw fueled me with that need to act as well. Sometimes, to fully understand the extent of how awful something/someone is you need to see it. The bathroom scene was an eye opener. Was it disgusting and over the top? Yes, but if it hadn’t been, whose to say people might have still found a way to forgive Monty?

Honestly, Jeff is ruined for me because I can’t hear his name without thinking of that stupid scene in 22 Jump Street with Channing Tatum.

You can’t love someone back to life. You can try.

Alex didn't fall into the pool because he was trying to drown himself, it's actually physically impossible to do that unless you have something to weigh you down. I think that he did it because he needed a moment to breath, not literally, obviously. You know when you're under water and it's just this white noise, this floating calming moment, when it feels like it's only you; it's my belief that he was trying to find that clarity. He's got a lot going on in his head. He's struggling with the blame that Hannah, and himself, have put on him. He's fighting about whether he should come forward about the tapes, and he's just got a million thoughts running through his head that he just can't figure out. Take being a normal teenager and amplify it by ten, that's what he's feeling. He probably feels really alone too because Bryce and his buddies aren't like him, he's not the tough jock and he even says that the only reason he's still hanging out with them is because of the tapes. He probably feels trapped, and scared, and unable to do anything because there's all these scenarios running through his head. So, he walks away, he falls into the pool and let's himself sit underwater for as long as he can. He blocks out everything and just let's this swaying calm overtake him. It's the first time in a while that he doesn't hear Hannah's accusation, the first time that the thought that he's better off dead isn't consuming him. It's nice, and then his lungs start to burn, his eyes sting, reality hits, and he's forced to come back up for air.
