What is your biggest regret?
Cheating on Reid. I would give anything to go back in time and take back what I did. I was a stupid teenager who let curiosity and desire ruin one of the best things to ever happen to me. Sounds cliche but it’s true. I really fucked up.

“I hate to be that person but think about it... Birth control isn’t really a medical necessity. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I totally agree and understand but it’s not something people need, unless it’s for medical purposes. I think that’s why it’s a possibility it won’t be paid for. We have more important things that should be free such as insulin, inhalers, you know, things people need to live.”

If Reid were any other guy he might have said that her bad fortune with her last relationship had been karma for the way she’d left him. But he wasn’t any other guy and he certainly didn’t believe that anyone deserved to be in any type of relationship that involved abuse…especially after losing her mother. Eyes widening slightly, he opened his mouth once, twice, three times in an attempt to say something meaningful that let her know how truly sorry he was that things had turned out that way for her and yet all that came out was,” If I had known I would have tried to call or something.” He didn’t know what else to say considering the fact that nothing could change the situation no matter how much he might have wanted to. Reid found himself taking a few steps towards her, all intentions of trying to comfort physically until he remembered it wasn’t his place to anymore. “I didn’t know your mom….” What could someone say after hearing something like that? He was struggling in his cross between wanting to be there for her but knowing it was already too late and he didn’t like this feeling one bit. “I’m sorry. I wish I could have helped you when it counted.” And he left it at that, hand working overtime on the nape of his neck as he struggled to not let his awkwardness become too overwhelming here. “Me? I uh…well Dylan and my grandparents live out here and I finally decided to go to college. I wanted someplace away from everything back home but something that seemed a little familiar and I thought being here was perfect. I go to UCLA…vet school, just like I used to talk about.”
Alexa’s heart began to beat faster as space between then reduced. She wanted nothing more than to feel his arms around her but she knew that was just a memory now. She fucked that up and had been dealing with the consequences of it for the last six years. Alexa cleared her throat and shook her head while attempting to give a fake smile once he paused in his tracks, not coming any closer. Her heart dropped into her stomach with disappointment but she knew she deserved it. “No, it’s okay. I thought about calling you after it happened but I figured you wouldn’t want to talk to me. It would’ve been crappy of me to do. You know, come running when I needed you. Especially after what I did. I know you would’ve been there for me, so the thought alone was enough to get me through it.” Her smile became genuine, mostly because the words she spoke were true. Reid had a heart of gold and she knew that no matter what, he would’ve been there for her.. That was one of the many thing she loved about him. It was also one of the reasons she regretted how things ended up. Reid was a one in a million kind of guys and Alexa’s curiosity and impatience had caused her to lose that. When he told her what he was doing there, for some reason, she almost wanted to cry. A good kind of cry though. Hearing that he was following his dream and going to school to be a vet made Alexa happy. Her mouth curled upward to form a grin. “Reid Vossler, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Has a nice ring to it. If something ever happens to my dog, I’ll make sure to come to you.” She chuckled awkwardly but friendly, hoping to make this encounter less awkward for the both of them.

Reid had to think about that for a minute, silence falling between the two while his mind mulled over the options here. He could endure an x-ray while trying to make small talk with someone who was once the love of his life or he could prolong getting out of here while waiting for another tech. Shaking his head slowly at Lexi, his eyes went back to the ground as he spoke. “Uh, no, that’s okay. You don’t have to do that.” He figured the sooner he got out of there the better. Standing around awkwardly, he waited for instructions from her despite knowing the drill at this point. He had seen enough of these machines to last a lifetime at this point and it had only been two month since he’d been shot. “What made you decide to move here?” And with all of his reservations about this whole situation he still found himself curious as to why her life had lead her here…straight back into his. He wondered how the rest of her college experience had gone after the break between them. He wondered how she had changed since their last encounter. Most of all…he wondered if she was happy with life as she knew it. “Sorry, I just…it’s so strange running into you here of all places.”
Though Alexa wouldn’t admit it, a small part of her was glad he didn’t take her up on the offer. Now that he was reality and not just a memory in more, she wanted to soak up every moment with him that she could. Alexa had spent the last six years wandering where he had ended up. However she didn’t realize how much she missed him until she saw him. Life with Reid was good. They were just teenagers but Alexa was happy. After their breakup, things went down hill for Alexa and she never quite went back to her old self. The now awkward and shy brunette gave a sad smile accompanied by a nod and placed his file down on the counter. Grabbing a pen from the mason jar setting on the counter, she began to jot a few things down, only to be stopped by a surprising question. She really didn’t expect Reid to ask her anything personal, mostly because she didn’t; think he cared. With a deep sigh she turned back towards him and tried to put on a brave face. Alexa didn’t want to answer the question but after what she did to him, the least she could do was be honest with him, “I uh, I lost my mom about a year after we split up. Then I ended up in an abusive relationship in which I didn’t exactly know how to get out of so I kind of just ran away and never looked back.” She could feel her cheeks burning as the blood rushed to them. Embarrassed as could be, she looked away for a moment, tried to gather her thoughts and then looked back at him. “No, it’s okay. Don’t be. What about you? If you don’t mind me asking.”

“I don’t know how you do it. Just hearing about a four car pile up makes me go straight to the blood of it all and I feel like I’m going to be sick.” Alaska groaned, pushing her sandwich a bit to the side. “You know, you’re allowed to take a break every now and then. It doesn’t make you any less of a saint.”
“When your boss says “We’ve got a four pile up coming in, lots of broken bones!” you have to stay. If I’m not there to take their x-rays, who’s gonna do it? I mean, I know I needed a break but I also really needed the extra money. I kind of couldn’t say no, know what I mean?”

“I’ll bring you tea if you agree to let me watch Steven Universe with you. Not gonna lie, I kind of love that show. We have a deal?”

“Oh come on.” Frankie said as she looked through her handbag, frantically looking for her keys. Frankie dropped her bag on the floor and sighed as she pressed her head against her door. “Of course this bloody happens.”
Though it was none of her business, Alexa could tell the female was clearly upset. “You okay? You need any help?” She asked quietly, hoping she wouldn’t think she was eavesdropping or being nosy.

“Fuck, that’s the worst. Do you have a warranty or anything on it? Is it fixable?”

“I don’t think anyone could remember what they were saying after watching you eat that. Do you even chew?”
“Ehh, half and half. I haven’t eaten since breakfast yesterday morning. I’ve been so swamped at work, I picked up an extra six hours due to a four car pile up so I’ve just been too busy to eat.”
The voice sounded familiar but Reid had thought nothing of it until he heard her cut herself off. He had been in the middle of staring at the equipment in the room when his eyes were drawn to the woman, curious as to why she had stopped herself from finishing her sentence. “Lexi?” He paused, eyes glued to his ex-girlfriend as the shock hit his system. She was in Los Angeles. She was his radiologist. It seemed fate wanted to laugh in his face for some reason here. Any of the good mood that had been left over from his appointment had been pushed aside to be replaced with utter…embarrassment. The last time Reid had seen her she was dumping him and now she got to exam him in one of the worst times of his life and probably want to know the story to boot. “Hi…” Honestly, it was the only thing he could think to say and out of habit he ran his hand through his hair only to start rubbing the back of his neck- one of his major tells of being nervous. “I didn’t….I didn’t know you were in California much less working here. When did…when did that happen?”
“Lexi.” All it took was one four letter word to come out of his mouth for everything to come flooding back. The memories, good and bad, the break up, the feelings, all of it. Reid was the only person to call her Lexi, ever. She was either Alexa, Lex or Lexa. Never Lexi, except for by Reid. It’d been years since she heard that nickname. Unable to speak, she just nodded at him. She took a deep breath in hopes to push aside the nauseous feeling and did her best to act normal, though it was a failed attempt. She stood there for a moment, trying to find the courage to speak. Without even realizing it, she eyed him up and down, admiring what the time had done to him. “I uh.” She began to speak but choked on her own words. “I moved here after college, two years ago. Uhm, I’m sorry.” She turned to look and see if the other tech was here yet but he wasn’t. “I can get someone else to do your x-ray if you want...” Alexa offered, not sure if he wanted to be around her or not. She could only assume he hated her, especially after what she did to him.
Appointment days had become something that Reid did not look forward to. The hospital was always teeming with people who were down about something or another, a very understandable fact, and he hated having to go in and just hear that he needed something else done for his shoulder to heal completely. This whole ordeal had been a huge mess and he was glad when his doctor told him on his current visit that he was pretty much free to go without his sling from now on…only to be a little bummed when he was told that imaging needed to be done just to be sure that everything had been cleaned out of the wound during his surgery. The boy found himself down in radiology after his regular appointment waiting for x-rays to be done so they could say he was officially in the clear. Name called, he stood and followed a nurse into the room where his images would take place eyes on the ground as he spoke humorously to the tech. “How much do I have to bribe you to tell my doctor the shoulder is good no matter the outcome today?”
Setting at the small desk set up in office of the radiology room, Alexa skimmed through the files on her desk, all of which were for upcoming appointments that day. Without reading names, she looked at the orders, interested to see what kind of x-rays she had on the agenda. A shoulder, a few ankles, chest, a broken finger, a neck, another shoulder, another ankle and several other x-rays would keep her busy. On top of that, none of those included any emergency x-rays that would come in. Though her day seemed like it was going to be busy, it was interesting to her nonetheless. Alexa could hear the receptionist just outside checking in a patient. There it was, her first patient of the day. Gossip had swirled around the hospital about a cute boy who’d been shot in the shoulder but Alexa had never had the opportunity to see for herself. Still setting at her desk, Alexa powered on all the machinery, logged into the radiology software and waited for everything to load. “Hi there, I’ll be with you in just a moment.” Alexa greeted politely as the door to the room opened. After everything was loaded and on, she grabbed the file and walked into the imaging room where the patient waited. With her eyes on the file, she chuckled. “I’ll tell doctor your shoulder is good if I get the stor-” Alexa’s words cut off the moment she saw the patient. Except the patient wasn’t just a patient, it was more than that. “Wow, uhm.” She froze again, unable to speak. Alexa swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat and gave an awkward smile at her ex. “Uhm, hi.”
