>CARD 1 >DISRUPTION FOR PURPOSE
A manifesto for disruptive thinking.
Scene:
Exterior, Thailand, a hot street.
A masked cowboy goes into a coffeeshop….
>THE DISRUPTION BLOG
I titled this blog based on the old TV series, Have Gun, Will Travel.
I’m growing a moustache and imagined a tumbleweed rolling across the street as I made my way into The Shelter, a quaint coffee shop in Phuket Town.
I’d pushed off from Singapore amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, armed with a pen and notebook. And now, a mask.
Self-disruption has been on my mind for a long time now. Confident I’d soon define the term more precisely, I hopped on a plane and nestled into a secluded spot in Phuket.
I wanted to create some things that made sense to me.
Do some writing.
Work with some digital tools.
And build out some ideas with no excuses.
In my notebook I’d written:
>Intent
>Clarity
>Disruptive thinking
>Change of pace
Have Pen - Will Write is a quick disruption blog I put together to share some ideas.
I hope you like the thoughts and offer your perspective here too.
But back to >Intent.
Throughout my career in AdLand, I’ve used a manifesto as a way to inform the work. I like to put it on the wall, old-school style. Then we can keep going back it to ensure our work remains true.
So, to tackle my personal 'intent' page, I mapped out some thoughts surrounding the ever-changing landscape of our industry.
At first, they appeared to be fairly random, but as I grouped them, it became clear that my notes had all spawned from points of disruption.
I banged them out here in a SlideShare.

Here’s a single thought from the above:
When disruption is the goal, navigation becomes the currency.
This isn't a new idea specifically from me, yet I think it's one that is lost by many communication agencies as a whole, even if the majority of its people get it. It's not always in the agency 'intent' or 'ethos' or 'corporate directive' – and I think that's a mistake.
Looking back now (hindsight is always 20/20), I can say the SlideShare here is still a little disjointed. But it helped me organize my own framework.
And, it gave me the intent I needed to push on, here, isolated in Thailand.
With a mask on.
Stay tuned for my next ‘card’ as it reveals itself here.
